Customer Reviews:
Wow! Severe Traffic Ahead, Recalculating!![]()
I bought this item after much comparison with the others available. This item was refurbished by Garmin, but still had a 1 year factory warranty, so why pay full retail? I just found this same GPS at a local major retail store for $449.99, so my $243 purchase price was a bargain, especially with free shipping!Garmin nuvi 1490/1490T 5-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic (Factory Refurbished)
Features - I wanted multi-point mapping abilities & ability upload routes from my PC, cause I volunteer for the MS150 and Tour de Cure bicycle events that have multiple break points (rest stops) and a route that zig-zags all over creation.
Features - I liked the idea of a larger screen (5 inch), the lifetime traffic service, the built in bluetooth speakerphone, and Garmin’s reputation.
Map Upgrades - I found that I could buy a lifetime subscription to map updates for a little over $100, using the 10% discount code Garmin gave me for registering my unit with them. (Note: register with Garmin first, then buy the map upgrade from their site, save 10%.)
Other Items Bought - I also bought the Garmin friction dash mount to use instead of the (included) suction cup window mount.Garmin Portable Friction Mount [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]
Who Needs the Stinking Manuals - Being a guy, I didn’t bother with reading any manuals until much later. Got it straight out of the box, turned it on and used it for a trip right then and there, comparing it side by side with my old GPS. I plugged in a destination about 160+ miles away involving interstate highways in Texas, plus some side roads, multiple towns, etc. I went straight from the PO Box, to the carwash before leaving town and hitting the highway north to Ft. Hood from San Antonio, TX.
The Garmin 1490T got me there faster (than the way my old GPS tried to route me) by about 20 minutes, cause it took me down a state highway with 60-70mph speeds, instead of sticking only to US highways.
Audio Directions - Audio quality quite nice in my opinion. Computer female voice, default 80% volume setting, easy to hear over road noise even in a rainstorm while driving.
Bluetooth Speaker Phone- I figured out how to connect my cell phone to the Garmin 1490T fairly easy, with pin code 1234. I’ve been making and sending calls thru it, mostly as a speaker phone, but found that the 1490T actually pulled down my phone directory and I could dial from there instead. But it didn’t get 100% of the directory. For some reason, it didn’t get all 500 phone #’s, like it skipped my wife’s cell number. (not good). Audio has been reported as good from the callers on the other end, saying some road noise detected, one saying I sounded like I was on a speaker phone, but quite legible even while highways noise was in background. Don’t try using the speaker phone while driving in a rainstorm, too much background road noise from the rain hitting the windshield, etc.
Traffic Alerts - I wasn’t sure how that worked, but trusted it would, since San Antonio, TX, (where I live) was on the list of covered cities. But as I drove north on IH-35 toward Austin, TX, all of a sudden a voice came out of nowhere saying “Severe Traffic Congestion Ahead, Recalculating Route”. This was about 35 miles before the congestion! It took me up into the congested area, then routed me around the majority of it. Wish I had trusted it earlier and I would have popped over to the nearby tollroad miles earlier instead. To me it was magic, I’m not sure how this works (FM transmitter / received built into power cord) in terms of where they get their live traffic info from, but it worked.
Lane Changing Alerts - The visual guide to changing lanes was more of a “hey, there are two right turn lanes ahead, left two lanes go straight”, etc. Audio was very accurate in saying “stay left for exit to…” or “stay right to exit then turn left/right, etc.” Very timely alerts and I never missed a turn while using it on this trip.
Screen Display - Easy to read! It alerts me to local speed limits when driving on highways, was only off by 5mph one short stretch of Texas Hwy 195 (speed was actually 60 instead of 65). Noticed some glare when the sun hit the screen from behind or from the side, will apply anti-glare screen like I used on my digital camera to see if that helps in future.
Cons: When text messaging received, it says “unknown caller” and stays on the screen, despite touching “ignore” or “answer”. Have noticed a few times that pop-up screen (while using bluetooth function) is annoying only because it didn’t go away right away, but the GPS kept giving me audio directions even though I couldn’t see the map. I’m going to keep playing with that “issue” and contact Garmin tech support about it if I can’t resolve it myself.
Recommendation - Yes, I strongly recommend this model to anyone wanting a easy to read, easy to use, accurate GPS for their vehicle. Supposedly it has pedestrian direction functions built in, with additional maps available for purchase (really cheap per metro area), but I will only be using it in my mini-van.
Thank you Amazon for another amazing deal!
SIMPLY THE BEST YOU COULD ASK FOR!![]()
I’ve owned several Garmin GPS products in the past, and The 1490T is my latest purchase. I consider Garmin truly the “gold standard” in the product field. Attractive casing, well engineered and laid out and very intuitive. The five inch screen is bright, easily read in traffic and very colorful, and frankly I can’t understand why this five inch screen option is not offered on the rest of the upper scale Garmin line. Bluetooth linking to my I-Phone 3G S is flawless and audio quality both sending and receiving is quite good. The interface is easy to input addresses, and the user menu offers a wealth of information you can op for. In reading another review here included, the compliant arose over outdated map data, undoubtedly related to the refreb status. I too noted older map data in my unit, but with a simple free call to Garmin tech support I was easily able to overcome this problem. The tech support representative simply asked me for proof of current purchase date from Amazon, which I provided easily and quickly by emailing a copy of my Amazon online invoice. I was then provided with an updated current warranty date, and made eligible for the sixty day initial Garmin online complimentary mapping update. The resulting download I was then allowed to access through my newly set up Garmin account page gave me the latest North American map soft wear version 2010.40. The graphic lane change feature is amazing, as all screen clutter is immediately removed as you approach a major highway brake and are shown a colorful 3D arrow guiding you visually into the correct lane to maintain route. Again, the five inch screen size shines! The 1490T is state of the art, providing superb routing, colorful interface, excellent blu tooth connectivity, and the wonderful lane change feature…at $199.00 as a refurbished with a full year’s factory warranty..look no further!
Beware. Maps a year old no free update!![]()
I just received my refurbished unit. When I registered it online with Garmin I discovered that the maps are from April 2009, almost a year old. The Garmin website promises that if you register your new Nuvi and a new map is available within 60 days of purchase it will be free. I pasted their guarantee below.
When I registered I am only offered the option of purchasing new maps. Perhaps since these are refurbished they are not “new” per Garmin. They are closed after 5 on Friday so I can’t get an answer from them. I am extremely unhappy as I have a trip planned for next week. BUYER BEWARE!

Customer Reviews: A great Kindle 2 case! I love the hinge system, one of the main reasons I bought it. Coming from the K1, the original case Amazon provided was functional but the Kindle always fell out. So when Amazon improved the hinge for the K2, I knew I would only buy a case that had that feature. One word of note, I initially did not “lock” the K2 in the new m-edge case correctly and it almost fell out when I shook it (over a sofa) to test the support. Luckily the two straps on the top right and bottom right held it from falling. Then I discovered I had not closed the hinge enough and made sure the top hinge was securely pushed upwards to “lock it”. Installation instructions are not included with the case (weird) but are available from m-edge online. Amazon won’t let me post the url, but if you go to the buymedge website you can view the installation intructions. The look and feel of the case is very professional. I am very happy with this purchase and do not expect to be taking the Kindle out of it very often. The only little issue I have is that the tab is a bit too snug when it needs to be slid into the cover to close. A snap might have been a bit easier. Still not enough of a con to drop the rating. But the tab does tuck away easily so as not to interfere while reading, which is nice. This Case Saved My Kindle! (But sacrificed itself in the process) OK, now to my “drop test”. Yesterday, I was leaving my house with my Kindle in tow (as always) when my dog jerked his leash free from my hand while I was locking the door. He ran…I screamed…and my Kindle went flying! It hit HARD on my back porch - landing first on top of a “Toad Holding a Pitchfork” yard statue before clattering onto the wooden floor. I just KNEW it was trashed! So, after I managed to wrangle the dog back into his kennel, I retrieved my Kindle only to find it still in PERFECT condition! Not a scratch on the screen. Not a mark anywhere on it! I turned it on and (to my great relief) it still worked fine! Unfortunatly, my case was not so lucky. The beautiful, soft black leather was battered and scarred; scratched and scuffed. The frog’s pitchfork had ravaged my case, but it had served its purpose: It had sacrificed itself to protect my Kindle. There is no doubt in my mind, as hard as it hit, that without this case, I would now be Kindle-less. All I can say is: Best $45.00 I ever spent! I’ve already ordered a replacement! Thanks, M-Edge! This product has my HIGHEST recommendation! Well worth the money! (OK, I might have over-stated the damage to the case just a bit for dramatic effect. It is still totally usable, just a bit battered on the outside & with one major scratch down the back of the spine where the metal pitchfork penetrated thru the soft leather to expose the cloth underneath. If it hadn’t landed on sharp, pointy medal, the case too would have been unscathed. Still, it would be fine to use, but I just HAD to get a new, unmarked one. Just my obcessive nature coming out, I guess.) Very high quality It’s so professional looking that it’s easily mistaken for a planner or the like. Without close inspection, nobody needs to know you’re carrying a Kindle around. SanDisk Extreme III 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card SDSDRX3-8192-A21 Sale-$32.54!July 21st, 2010 by tommy5492461

Customer Reviews: Great item Must buy for the serious photographer Note: Most of us know this is a SDHC card not a regular SD. Regular SD cards are limited to 2GB, if you see a SD card that states a higher capacity be aware that it is essentially a “hack” and the card will not be reliable. I’ve read horror stories of entire projects gone down the drain because of those cards. 4GB and above will always have to be SDHC; therefore they will be capable of working ONLY with SDHC compatible devices. Of course if you want to keep your TV sticking out from the wall permanently then center it. Be sure to measure for your own needs. Way to go Amazon. Thermaltake BlacX Duet USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST0014U Discount.July 20th, 2010 by tommy5492461
Thermaltake BlacX Duet USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST0014U Description:
Industry’s most trusted hard drive docking station is now twice as convenient. BlacX Duet now offers two slots to turn any Serial ATA hard drives into external USB 2.0 or eSATA storage device in minutes. Moving large chunks of videos, musics or data files between hard drives will now happen in blazing speed (up to 3.0 Gbps for eSATA or 480Mbps for USB 2.0) instead of the slow network cable. The dock supports all 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch SATA hard disk drives up to 2 TB. Installation requires no screws or tools whatsoever. Simply pop your hard drive into the dock, plug it into your computer and you are set! Hot-swap support means you can use multiple hard drives with your computer without having to reboot. The dock also maximizes heat dissipation and exhaust to protect your device from damage and extend its life. Compatibility with both PCs and Macs makes the BlacX Duet adapt to multi platform environments.
Features
Customer Reviews: Overheating problems A major problem, though: while idle, the drives hover around ~47 degC. With ~1hr of heavy reading, they heat up to ~60 degC (with ambient temps around ~20 degC). The design of this dock blocks _all_ airflow to the bottom end of the drives, leading to severe overheating. This makes BlackX practically useless for duplication of larger drives; they’ll overheat/fail long before the duplication has finished. E.g., I managed to copy ~150G of a 500G drive before it hit 60degC and stopped. Looks like a major design flaw; plan to return it. Would buy the single drive version if given the choice again usb works just fine Before you buy, make sure you do your homework as to what’s on your machine. (Duh!!!) If you expect to use eSATA and want to plug in two drives, be sure you have a port multiplier on your eSATA port, which is, apparently, a device on the card ([...]). Might not be easy info to get since I found it mentioned on only one of the dozen+ eSATA controller cards & laptop adapter cards I just looked at. However, some of them mention supporting RAID, and I’m beginning to wonder if that means they must have the multiplier device. Samsung PN42C450 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV Black-Retail $599.99! Customer Reviews: Fantastic set! It was able to find some basic cable channels in HD, which is awesome, and Modern Warfare 2 looks simply astounding (again, much better than on aforementioned 42″ and 22″ LCDs.) The sound is decent, it’s actually better than I was expecting. It’s obviously no Home Theatre, but I was impressed. It’s got a few connections which aren’t listed on Amazon…the 3 HDMI, 1 PC, 1 USB, 1 Component, 1 Dual Component/Composite, Audio In 1/8″, Audio Out 1/8″, Optical out, and cable. The menu is very easy to navigate and adjust, and in it you can turn off it’s startup/shut down sound if you find it irritating. It’s kinda soothing though. One negative I’ve found is that the audio running out isn’t controlled by the televisions volume, I guess that’s pretty standard, but it means my cheap computer speakers aren’t much good. (No remote) Also when installing the base stand it felt like I was about to destroy the thread on the screws that are used…They aren’t easy to get in there! It’s very elegant, and looks great in my living room. It’s not super bright, which I love (LCD panels hurt my eyes after a while) All in all, for the money it’s a fantastic TV. I was looking for quality, affordability, and style. Amazing TV I ordered this TV on a Tuesday night, received it on Thursday and the guy brought it to my door(4th floor walkup in NYC). I guess Beach Camera should receive the credit there. Set it up and the TV was able to find a bunch of HD channels and channels I didn’t have before, so that’s a big plus. I have to say, like the other review, installing the stand was a pain in the ass. I don’t think the screw holes were completely drilled out, but I managed. Sound is great, no buzzing or anything. It is very sleek and stylish and makes my living room look great. Menu is very easy to navigate and viewing pictures with a card reader or USB is a snap. Just plug it in and you have many options for slideshows with music and other options. PC input also very simple to hook up. You will not be disappointed. Especially with the free shipping, no tax (for me at least) and the great amazon price, this HDTV cannot be beat! Nice The only issues that I have noticed with this TV are the screw holes used for attaching the stand and room brightness. There’s no excuse for the poor job Samsung did with not properly threading the ten holes on the stand. As for the brightness of the room, this TV performs better in darker rooms. We’ve got heavy blinds that block out a lot of light so it’s not that big of a deal for us. If you can’t control the lighting in the room that you plan on using this set in, then you should probably look at another set. I gave the whole 1080p vs 720p a lot of thought before purchasing this set. I shouldn’t have bothered-it’s just marketing hype, in my opinion. All I can say is that the picture’s better than the one I got on the Sony. And getting it for $539 makes it that much better. Oh, and don’t forget the SquareTrade three year warranty for $47…

Buy Logitech Professional Presenter R800 At Amazon!July 19th, 2010 by tommy5492461
Logitech Professional Presenter R800 Description:
Logitech Professional Presenter R800 gives you powerful control for high-impact presentations. The brilliant green laser pointer is easy to see, even on flat panel displays, projection screens, and in brightly lit rooms. Manage your time with silent, vibrating alerts and controls that are easy to set and adjust. Move about for greater impact, with a range of up to 100 feet (30 meters) you can cover every corner of the room. Navigate through your presentation with confidence thanks to intuitive slideshow controls you can find easily by touch. A storable plug-and-play wireless receiver makes it simple to get started—there’s no software to install. And when you’re through, the receiver stores inside the presenter to make packing up easy.
Features
Customer Reviews: Excellent Presentation Tool Button navigation begins with the sliding on and off switch located on the side. The back/forward and on/off black screen buttons are placed on the top. Volume control is at your fingertips. I found that even in a darkened room, the indented buttons are easy to navigate. With its built in timer, the LCD display is clean and simple. A great time management tool is the vibrating alarm with three settings (5/3/0 minutes). It also displays battery strength and reception levels. I put the R800 to the test with a matted wall screen in a lighted room. The green laser’s projection was bright and visible from all points. The second day, I worked with an LCD screen. Again the same outstanding results. The manufacturer boasts of an operating range of 100 feet. The most that I could garner straight on was a maximum operating distance of about 50 feet. Anything past that and it was touch and go. Still not too bad. The R800 is powered by two AAA batteries. If its anything like its predecessor, battery consumption should be low. This model is backed by the manufacturer’s 3 year limited warranty. The R800 is packaged with a foam zipper case, user information, (2) AAA batteries and of course the on board receiver. The unit’s exterior is a black finish. With all of its bells and whistles, an illuminated LCD display would have made this the perfect go to device. Even without that overlooked feature, I remain very impressed with the Logitech R800. It is an excellent presentation tool. Brilliant design and function with only one missing feature For any person doing presentations, this little unit is a wonderful device. Ergonomically, the design is perfect. It is small in size, light in weight and just fits in your hand perfectly. Indentations on the various buttons let you easily find the correct button without looking during your presentation. On the left edge is the on/off sliding switch. On the right edge are two buttons. One of the buttons is for controlling the start/pause of the presentation timer, the other is for setting the presentation duration timer. On the face of the device are 5 buttons. The top button operates the green laser. Immediately below that wide button are two narrower, but taller buttons that control the movement forward or backward through the presentation. And below that are two slightly smaller buttons that control launching the presentation and, if the application supports it, going to a black screen. The green laser is bright and relatively sharp. It actually is not a pinpoint sharp light like some other laser pointers, but rather a bit more diffuse. This works out to be an advantage because the lit area becomes a bit larger in diameter, albeit less “sharp”, which makes seeing the laser on your screen easier. It really is better than an intensely bright tiny spot. And as compared to the Kensington pointer device I recently reviewed, Kensington 33374 Wireless Presenter with Laser Pointer, it was much brighter overall thus more effective. One of my favorite and most useful features of the R800 is the timer function. Not only do you get a visual indication of the relative amount of time left, by a series of gradually diminishing lines, you also get a silent vibration in the device at 5, 2 and 0 minute markers. This is so handy and helpful that it has become indispensable to me. The USB receiver stores nicely inside the R800. I have used the R800 on my PC ACER laptop with no issues. Concerning Apple computers however, Logitech does not officially state that this is meant for use on a Mac. However it will work with most Macs as best I can determine. I’ve tried it with four different Macs. On my 24″, 2.16GHz iMac with Snow Leopard (and previously with Leopard) operating system, it did not work at all. But then I read about a possible conflict with the Logitech Control Center which is used for controlling Logitech keyboards, mice, trackballs, etc. I happen to use the Logitech Marble Mouse with my iMac and had the Logitech Control Center v3.10 control panel installed. When I plugged the USB receiver into my USB port, it was not recognized and thus the R800 did not work with the iMac. However, as soon as I uninstalled the LCC software (using the uninstaller that was in my Utilities folder) the R800 receiver did work. It also worked perfectly using IBM’s Lotus Symphony presentation software with my 2.4GHz MacBook running Snow Leopard. On an old 1.6GHz PPC G4 iMac running OSX 10.5.8 and PowerPoint from Microsoft Office 2004, it worked except for the start presentation button. But manually starting the presentation then using the R800 to go forward and backward worked. With Neo-Office v3.0, it worked perfectly… even the start presentation button. I also tried on a 1.2GHz PPC G4 iBook with OSX 10.5.8 and it also worked just like on the old iMac with Microsoft Office 2004. Whether the start presentation button works or not seems to depend on the application you use for the presentation rather than the model of computer you are using. Bottom line is check before you buy or it may not work with your particular Mac, though it does work on the all of the ones I tried it with. If it does not work on your Mac, then check to see if you have Logitech Control Center installed (check your System Preferences panel > Other) Logitech should be more forthcoming with the actual state of affairs as it pertains to Mac compatibility and compatibility with Logitech Control Center software but in the meantime, don’t assume it will work unless you can corroborate that with someone who has already had success with it on a Mac using the same model. The only major omission in my opinion is the lack of backlighting on the R800 LCD display. It would be desirable to have backlighting on the unit when operating in dimly lit rooms. This is a wonderful little device that stands heads and shoulders above its competition such as the Kensington Wireless Presenter Kensington 33374 Wireless Presenter with Laser Pointer. However it costs nearly twice as much as the Kensington. For my money, it’s worth the extra cost as it has a better ergonomic design and more useful features. I give it a solid 4 stars. Why not 5 stars? Because it really needs a backlit display and it is quite extraordinary to me that the Logitech R800 device is incompatible with Logitechs’ own Logitech Control Center software on the Mac. Nevertheless, this is one terrific pointing/timing/control device for presentations. Fatal Flaw
