Customer Reviews:

Wow! Severe Traffic Ahead, Recalculating!5
I bought this item after much comparison with the others available. This item was refurbished by Garmin, but still had a 1 year factory warranty, so why pay full retail? I just found this same GPS at a local major retail store for $449.99, so my $243 purchase price was a bargain, especially with free shipping!Garmin nuvi 1490/1490T 5-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic (Factory Refurbished)

Features - I wanted multi-point mapping abilities & ability upload routes from my PC, cause I volunteer for the MS150 and Tour de Cure bicycle events that have multiple break points (rest stops) and a route that zig-zags all over creation.

Features - I liked the idea of a larger screen (5 inch), the lifetime traffic service, the built in bluetooth speakerphone, and Garmin’s reputation.

Map Upgrades - I found that I could buy a lifetime subscription to map updates for a little over $100, using the 10% discount code Garmin gave me for registering my unit with them. (Note: register with Garmin first, then buy the map upgrade from their site, save 10%.)

Other Items Bought - I also bought the Garmin friction dash mount to use instead of the (included) suction cup window mount.Garmin Portable Friction Mount [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]

Who Needs the Stinking Manuals - Being a guy, I didn’t bother with reading any manuals until much later. Got it straight out of the box, turned it on and used it for a trip right then and there, comparing it side by side with my old GPS. I plugged in a destination about 160+ miles away involving interstate highways in Texas, plus some side roads, multiple towns, etc. I went straight from the PO Box, to the carwash before leaving town and hitting the highway north to Ft. Hood from San Antonio, TX.

The Garmin 1490T got me there faster (than the way my old GPS tried to route me) by about 20 minutes, cause it took me down a state highway with 60-70mph speeds, instead of sticking only to US highways.

Audio Directions - Audio quality quite nice in my opinion. Computer female voice, default 80% volume setting, easy to hear over road noise even in a rainstorm while driving.

Bluetooth Speaker Phone- I figured out how to connect my cell phone to the Garmin 1490T fairly easy, with pin code 1234. I’ve been making and sending calls thru it, mostly as a speaker phone, but found that the 1490T actually pulled down my phone directory and I could dial from there instead. But it didn’t get 100% of the directory. For some reason, it didn’t get all 500 phone #’s, like it skipped my wife’s cell number. (not good). Audio has been reported as good from the callers on the other end, saying some road noise detected, one saying I sounded like I was on a speaker phone, but quite legible even while highways noise was in background. Don’t try using the speaker phone while driving in a rainstorm, too much background road noise from the rain hitting the windshield, etc.

Traffic Alerts - I wasn’t sure how that worked, but trusted it would, since San Antonio, TX, (where I live) was on the list of covered cities. But as I drove north on IH-35 toward Austin, TX, all of a sudden a voice came out of nowhere saying “Severe Traffic Congestion Ahead, Recalculating Route”. This was about 35 miles before the congestion! It took me up into the congested area, then routed me around the majority of it. Wish I had trusted it earlier and I would have popped over to the nearby tollroad miles earlier instead. To me it was magic, I’m not sure how this works (FM transmitter / received built into power cord) in terms of where they get their live traffic info from, but it worked.

Lane Changing Alerts - The visual guide to changing lanes was more of a “hey, there are two right turn lanes ahead, left two lanes go straight”, etc. Audio was very accurate in saying “stay left for exit to…” or “stay right to exit then turn left/right, etc.” Very timely alerts and I never missed a turn while using it on this trip.

Screen Display - Easy to read! It alerts me to local speed limits when driving on highways, was only off by 5mph one short stretch of Texas Hwy 195 (speed was actually 60 instead of 65). Noticed some glare when the sun hit the screen from behind or from the side, will apply anti-glare screen like I used on my digital camera to see if that helps in future.

Cons: When text messaging received, it says “unknown caller” and stays on the screen, despite touching “ignore” or “answer”. Have noticed a few times that pop-up screen (while using bluetooth function) is annoying only because it didn’t go away right away, but the GPS kept giving me audio directions even though I couldn’t see the map. I’m going to keep playing with that “issue” and contact Garmin tech support about it if I can’t resolve it myself.

Recommendation - Yes, I strongly recommend this model to anyone wanting a easy to read, easy to use, accurate GPS for their vehicle. Supposedly it has pedestrian direction functions built in, with additional maps available for purchase (really cheap per metro area), but I will only be using it in my mini-van.

Thank you Amazon for another amazing deal!

SIMPLY THE BEST YOU COULD ASK FOR!5
I’ve owned several Garmin GPS products in the past, and The 1490T is my latest purchase. I consider Garmin truly the “gold standard” in the product field. Attractive casing, well engineered and laid out and very intuitive. The five inch screen is bright, easily read in traffic and very colorful, and frankly I can’t understand why this five inch screen option is not offered on the rest of the upper scale Garmin line. Bluetooth linking to my I-Phone 3G S is flawless and audio quality both sending and receiving is quite good. The interface is easy to input addresses, and the user menu offers a wealth of information you can op for. In reading another review here included, the compliant arose over outdated map data, undoubtedly related to the refreb status. I too noted older map data in my unit, but with a simple free call to Garmin tech support I was easily able to overcome this problem. The tech support representative simply asked me for proof of current purchase date from Amazon, which I provided easily and quickly by emailing a copy of my Amazon online invoice. I was then provided with an updated current warranty date, and made eligible for the sixty day initial Garmin online complimentary mapping update. The resulting download I was then allowed to access through my newly set up Garmin account page gave me the latest North American map soft wear version 2010.40. The graphic lane change feature is amazing, as all screen clutter is immediately removed as you approach a major highway brake and are shown a colorful 3D arrow guiding you visually into the correct lane to maintain route. Again, the five inch screen size shines! The 1490T is state of the art, providing superb routing, colorful interface, excellent blu tooth connectivity, and the wonderful lane change feature…at $199.00 as a refurbished with a full year’s factory warranty..look no further!

Beware. Maps a year old no free update!1
I just received my refurbished unit. When I registered it online with Garmin I discovered that the maps are from April 2009, almost a year old. The Garmin website promises that if you register your new Nuvi and a new map is available within 60 days of purchase it will be free. I pasted their guarantee below.

When I registered I am only offered the option of purchasing new maps. Perhaps since these are refurbished they are not “new” per Garmin. They are closed after 5 on Friday so I can’t get an answer from them. I am extremely unhappy as I have a trip planned for next week. BUYER BEWARE!

Customer Reviews:

A great Kindle 2 case!5
Just received this cover today (in purple, but same model), about 3 weeks after ordering from Amazon. Granted, it was ordered before the product was even complete so I was ok with the wait. It is very similar in look and feel to a Dooney and Bourke pocketbook if you are familiar with them. It has a great leather smell, just like a new purse. And the additional room on the binder side (meant for the e-Luminator light - sold separately) gives you a nice place to hold the cover with the Kindle attached.

I love the hinge system, one of the main reasons I bought it. Coming from the K1, the original case Amazon provided was functional but the Kindle always fell out. So when Amazon improved the hinge for the K2, I knew I would only buy a case that had that feature. One word of note, I initially did not “lock” the K2 in the new m-edge case correctly and it almost fell out when I shook it (over a sofa) to test the support. Luckily the two straps on the top right and bottom right held it from falling. Then I discovered I had not closed the hinge enough and made sure the top hinge was securely pushed upwards to “lock it”. Installation instructions are not included with the case (weird) but are available from m-edge online. Amazon won’t let me post the url, but if you go to the buymedge website you can view the installation intructions.

The look and feel of the case is very professional. I am very happy with this purchase and do not expect to be taking the Kindle out of it very often. The only little issue I have is that the tab is a bit too snug when it needs to be slid into the cover to close. A snap might have been a bit easier. Still not enough of a con to drop the rating. But the tab does tuck away easily so as not to interfere while reading, which is nice.

This Case Saved My Kindle! (But sacrificed itself in the process)5
Well, first let me say that this case is awesome! High quality construction and materials, great functionality, and very pleasing to the eye. The spine clips hold well and with the two corner bands, it locks in sturdier that the amazon cover. The real beauty of this cover is how much better it makes the Kindle feel in my hands. Fold the cover over and it works perfect for one-hand reading, adding just enough mass to make it feel like a book in my hands and provides a solid hand hold so I don’t have to worry about dropping it.

OK, now to my “drop test”. Yesterday, I was leaving my house with my Kindle in tow (as always) when my dog jerked his leash free from my hand while I was locking the door. He ran…I screamed…and my Kindle went flying! It hit HARD on my back porch - landing first on top of a “Toad Holding a Pitchfork” yard statue before clattering onto the wooden floor. I just KNEW it was trashed! So, after I managed to wrangle the dog back into his kennel, I retrieved my Kindle only to find it still in PERFECT condition! Not a scratch on the screen. Not a mark anywhere on it! I turned it on and (to my great relief) it still worked fine! Unfortunatly, my case was not so lucky. The beautiful, soft black leather was battered and scarred; scratched and scuffed. The frog’s pitchfork had ravaged my case, but it had served its purpose: It had sacrificed itself to protect my Kindle. There is no doubt in my mind, as hard as it hit, that without this case, I would now be Kindle-less. All I can say is: Best $45.00 I ever spent! I’ve already ordered a replacement! Thanks, M-Edge! This product has my HIGHEST recommendation! Well worth the money!

(OK, I might have over-stated the damage to the case just a bit for dramatic effect. It is still totally usable, just a bit battered on the outside & with one major scratch down the back of the spine where the metal pitchfork penetrated thru the soft leather to expose the cloth underneath. If it hadn’t landed on sharp, pointy medal, the case too would have been unscathed. Still, it would be fine to use, but I just HAD to get a new, unmarked one. Just my obcessive nature coming out, I guess.)

Very high quality5
This product exudes quality and class. The leather is thick and supple. The stitching seems sturdy, and the suede-like lining is soft and protective. The jacket is substantial — each cover is nearly as thick as the Kindle itself, so altogether you’re carrying a portfolio that’s 3 times as thick as the Kindle. The heft of the jacket provides a lot of protection, though. You can hurl it across the room without damaging the Kindle inside (still wouldn’t recommend it, though).

It’s so professional looking that it’s easily mistaken for a planner or the like. Without close inspection, nobody needs to know you’re carrying a Kindle around.

Customer Reviews:

Great item5
I’m using this card (with the associated reader) with my Canon XSI. While the speed of the card exceeds the requirements of the camera, the fast read speed is a real boon when I need to move hundreds of RAW image files to my PC. The included reader is required for this, as the SD reader in my PC cannot handle this SDHC card. Very happy, I love the fast read speed this card supports.

Must buy for the serious photographer5
For the professional photographer or the serious (obsessed) amateur this card is a must buy. You really can’t beat the price/value ratio here. This is a fully certified Class 6 card which ensures a data read/write of 20MB/s (Class 6 is the fastest type in the SDHC profile). In fact I like these cards so much this is my second one, I have a 4GB of the same kind. If you use it with a point-and-shoot camera this will definitely be overkill but you can rest assured that it won’t let you down. Great product by SanDisk.

Note: Most of us know this is a SDHC card not a regular SD. Regular SD cards are limited to 2GB, if you see a SD card that states a higher capacity be aware that it is essentially a “hack” and the card will not be reliable. I’ve read horror stories of entire projects gone down the drain because of those cards. 4GB and above will always have to be SDHC; therefore they will be capable of working ONLY with SDHC compatible devices.

Great memory card5
I have several other Extreme III cards and they are great. I use on in a Panasonic Lumix FZ-50 digital camaera, and it works great in burst mode shooting. Sice the card is SDHC format, you need the included card reader when using on a computer to copy files. Small price to pay for high capacity, fast write speeds. Excellent product.

Looks so small, works so well!5
This card is so incredibly small! But size isn’t everything ;) It works excellent in my SanDisk e260. Very easy to install in the player, if your fingers are small enough! Just make sure it clicks ALL the way in. It’s so tiny and delicate I didn’t want to be too tough on it, so the first attempt at loading it into my player, it was still sticking out a bit, even though it seemed to be installed. Once it’s correctly installed, it gives an audible “click” as it hits home, and sits flush with the outer edge of the player.
Quick and easy to install, fast delivery….thanks Amazon!

Great item.5
Great item at a great price. Used it for loading MP3’s in my cellphone. Use the SD adapter to plug into computer card reader, then take the micro card out and insert into phone - Viola, instant tunes!

Can’t go wrong with SanDisk!5
I got this 2GB card for my phone, a Blackberry Curve 8310. I’ve had it for about 6 months now with no problems. Works great! Have not filled it up yet either, not due to trying! I have quite a few pictures on there and some music. I would highly suggest it! Believe me, it will take you awhile to fill up 2GB (the camaras only a 2MP on these phones, but still look good).

Customer Reviews:

Solid5
This is a solid, well-made product. It comes with everything you MIGHT need including an adapter plate, spacers, and various screws. Since I was only mounting a 32″ Westinghouse LCD television that had standard mounting holes on the back my installation didn’t require the extra stuff. The 32″ TV I mounted weighs about 32 pounds after its table mount is removed, so this wall-mount handles it effortlessly.

Keep in mind that this is an folding, jointed device, so you will need to mount it to the wall (in a stud) off-center if you want it to fold flat against the wall and be centered. Of course if you want to keep your TV sticking out from the wall permanently then center it. Be sure to measure for your own needs. Here is a link to a pic with the dimensions:

So, do I recommend this product? Absolutely!

Highly recommended.5
Outstanding choice, simple, strong reasonable price.
I installed it on a 40″ Samsung LN40A630 LCD panel. Make sure you spend the difference on an accurate stud finder so that you hit the stud properly. You may also also want to purchase two stainless #14 x 2-1/2″ flat head wood screws, the ones in the kit are a touch soft and round out easily.

Perfect and GREAT Price5
I was a little skeptical of this product because when I viewed the exact model from peerless.com it was $220. But I used the tables on peerless.com to tell me which model would work for my TV - I have a 40″ Samsung, 40lbs - and it said this one, among many others, would do. I ordered, it came fast, and it’s perfect. It was a new product, fully boxed, had all the parts, and great directions. I was certainly worried about hanging a (expensive) TV on the wall, but not after putting this mount in - not only was it very easy to install but it is VERY heavy duty. It works like a charm - moving up, down, left, right, close to the wall, far from the wall.

Ultimately, it works beautifully and I saved over $150! Way to go Amazon.

Overheating problems2
Bought the unit for a computer with P7P55D Pro motherboard running Linux (Fedora 12). The system recognized the port multiplier without issues; two disks over eSATA worked out of the box. Tested it with two 500G drives (a Seagate and a WDC). Reading from a single drive gives a decent ~75 MB/s; simultaneous reads from two drives drop the rate to 45 MB/s.

A major problem, though: while idle, the drives hover around ~47 degC. With ~1hr of heavy reading, they heat up to ~60 degC (with ambient temps around ~20 degC). The design of this dock blocks _all_ airflow to the bottom end of the drives, leading to severe overheating. This makes BlackX practically useless for duplication of larger drives; they’ll overheat/fail long before the duplication has finished. E.g., I managed to copy ~150G of a 500G drive before it hit 60degC and stopped.

Looks like a major design flaw; plan to return it.

Would buy the single drive version if given the choice again3
I bought this mainly for the fast eSata support, but was greatly dissapointed to find out that my computer will not support dual eSata as it doesn’t have port multiplier functionality. My computer is fairly new as well and running Windows 7 Professional. Most people won’t know if their computer has port multiplier functionality until they buy an item such as this and try it. Dual drives work good using USB, but you only get 400MB transfer rates and not 3GB as you do with eSata. The eSata with 1 drive does work but is somewhat flakey as well. What will happen is at least 25% of the time when you reboot the computer and you are using the dock connected via eSate cable, the computer will lose sight of the dock and tell you there is no eSata dock/drive connected. Only way to redetect the dock and drive is to power down the dock as well as computer, then power on the dock, let the drive initialize for approx. 30 seconds, then power back on the computer. Using the USB cable, this does not happen, so one can only assume the eSata connectivity between the port and the computer is flakey. Other than that, I like the dock as it’s fairly light and easy to use amoung several computers to backup and copy data too.

usb works just fine5
I bought a 1TB Western Digital My Book Essential Edition about 3 months ago for my PC-based TV upstairs. It worked fine, then one day just stopped. I could feel it trying to start when I played with the power cord. WD sent me a replacement to try a new power cord, but that didn’t solve the problem. I could keep the new drive and send back the old one but there’s no way to get all the data off if I do that, so I broke the warranty, popped open the cover, and plugged the old drive in this Thermaltake Duet using the USB connector. (My machine doesn’t have an eSATA port; a mistake I won’t make again.) My Vista 64-bit machine recognized it and started the drive promptly. Everything is still on my WD drive, and I now have a slot for another drive if I want to expand further.

Before you buy, make sure you do your homework as to what’s on your machine. (Duh!!!) If you expect to use eSATA and want to plug in two drives, be sure you have a port multiplier on your eSATA port, which is, apparently, a device on the card ([...]). Might not be easy info to get since I found it mentioned on only one of the dozen+ eSATA controller cards & laptop adapter cards I just looked at. However, some of them mention supporting RAID, and I’m beginning to wonder if that means they must have the multiplier device.

Customer Reviews:

Fantastic set!5
Just received the TV today! It arrived a day early, which was a pleasant surprise. Once I fired it up, I was ecstatic with this set. The quality is amazing for the price, the picture blows away a top of the line 42″ 1080p LCD display that I’ve seen. Deep rich colors, high contrast, fluid motion…there is nothing not to like! Streamed Spartacus off Netflix, and compared to my old little 22″ LCD it really came to life.(Even if the writing is really bad)

It was able to find some basic cable channels in HD, which is awesome, and Modern Warfare 2 looks simply astounding (again, much better than on aforementioned 42″ and 22″ LCDs.)

The sound is decent, it’s actually better than I was expecting. It’s obviously no Home Theatre, but I was impressed. It’s got a few connections which aren’t listed on Amazon…the 3 HDMI, 1 PC, 1 USB, 1 Component, 1 Dual Component/Composite, Audio In 1/8″, Audio Out 1/8″, Optical out, and cable. The menu is very easy to navigate and adjust, and in it you can turn off it’s startup/shut down sound if you find it irritating. It’s kinda soothing though.

One negative I’ve found is that the audio running out isn’t controlled by the televisions volume, I guess that’s pretty standard, but it means my cheap computer speakers aren’t much good. (No remote) Also when installing the base stand it felt like I was about to destroy the thread on the screws that are used…They aren’t easy to get in there!

It’s very elegant, and looks great in my living room. It’s not super bright, which I love (LCD panels hurt my eyes after a while) All in all, for the money it’s a fantastic TV. I was looking for quality, affordability, and style.

Amazing TV5
I am truly impressed with this TV. I have been researching LCD and Plasmas for a little while and found this to be the best HDTV for the price. I had a chance to check it out at a local retailer beforehand and compared to other TVs in the store this one completely stood out. Picture was MUCH better than the 1080 models which were more than twice the price. The Sony next to it showed people with grey suits while this one had deep black and vibrant color. The specs (2million:1 contrast, 600hz) blow away anything I could find in this range and the picture is simply fantastic. Plus you can’t beat this price!

I ordered this TV on a Tuesday night, received it on Thursday and the guy brought it to my door(4th floor walkup in NYC). I guess Beach Camera should receive the credit there.

Set it up and the TV was able to find a bunch of HD channels and channels I didn’t have before, so that’s a big plus. I have to say, like the other review, installing the stand was a pain in the ass. I don’t think the screw holes were completely drilled out, but I managed.

Sound is great, no buzzing or anything. It is very sleek and stylish and makes my living room look great. Menu is very easy to navigate and viewing pictures with a card reader or USB is a snap. Just plug it in and you have many options for slideshows with music and other options. PC input also very simple to hook up.

You will not be disappointed. Especially with the free shipping, no tax (for me at least) and the great amazon price, this HDTV cannot be beat!

Nice5
This set replaces a 50″ Sony LCD projection HDTV that fell victim to the blue dots of death. It’s hooked up to a Motorola HD DVR set top box through HDMI. It’s been an adjustment going down to 42″ from 50″ but it’s getting easier. The picture on HD channels is excellent and standard def channels look a lot better than they did on the Sony. The set itself is beautiful and looks great in our living room. The sound is good and there’s no buzzing.

The only issues that I have noticed with this TV are the screw holes used for attaching the stand and room brightness. There’s no excuse for the poor job Samsung did with not properly threading the ten holes on the stand. As for the brightness of the room, this TV performs better in darker rooms. We’ve got heavy blinds that block out a lot of light so it’s not that big of a deal for us. If you can’t control the lighting in the room that you plan on using this set in, then you should probably look at another set.

I gave the whole 1080p vs 720p a lot of thought before purchasing this set. I shouldn’t have bothered-it’s just marketing hype, in my opinion. All I can say is that the picture’s better than the one I got on the Sony. And getting it for $539 makes it that much better. Oh, and don’t forget the SquareTrade three year warranty for $47…

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

Customer Reviews:

Excellent Presentation Tool4
Coming out of the box, the first thing that caught my attention was the ergonomic feel of the Logitech R800. Once I popped in the two AAA batteries I removed the on board receiver and plugged it directly into my laptop’s USB port. With no software downloads to concern myself with, the system was up and running in no time. The R800 operates via Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 platform.

Button navigation begins with the sliding on and off switch located on the side. The back/forward and on/off black screen buttons are placed on the top. Volume control is at your fingertips. I found that even in a darkened room, the indented buttons are easy to navigate. With its built in timer, the LCD display is clean and simple. A great time management tool is the vibrating alarm with three settings (5/3/0 minutes). It also displays battery strength and reception levels.

I put the R800 to the test with a matted wall screen in a lighted room. The green laser’s projection was bright and visible from all points. The second day, I worked with an LCD screen. Again the same outstanding results. The manufacturer boasts of an operating range of 100 feet. The most that I could garner straight on was a maximum operating distance of about 50 feet. Anything past that and it was touch and go. Still not too bad.

The R800 is powered by two AAA batteries. If its anything like its predecessor, battery consumption should be low. This model is backed by the manufacturer’s 3 year limited warranty. The R800 is packaged with a foam zipper case, user information, (2) AAA batteries and of course the on board receiver. The unit’s exterior is a black finish.

With all of its bells and whistles, an illuminated LCD display would have made this the perfect go to device. Even without that overlooked feature, I remain very impressed with the Logitech R800. It is an excellent presentation tool.

Brilliant design and function with only one missing feature4
The Logitech Professional Presenter R800 is one of those tools you didn’t realize you needed until you get one in your hands.

For any person doing presentations, this little unit is a wonderful device. Ergonomically, the design is perfect. It is small in size, light in weight and just fits in your hand perfectly. Indentations on the various buttons let you easily find the correct button without looking during your presentation. On the left edge is the on/off sliding switch. On the right edge are two buttons. One of the buttons is for controlling the start/pause of the presentation timer, the other is for setting the presentation duration timer. On the face of the device are 5 buttons. The top button operates the green laser. Immediately below that wide button are two narrower, but taller buttons that control the movement forward or backward through the presentation. And below that are two slightly smaller buttons that control launching the presentation and, if the application supports it, going to a black screen.

The green laser is bright and relatively sharp. It actually is not a pinpoint sharp light like some other laser pointers, but rather a bit more diffuse. This works out to be an advantage because the lit area becomes a bit larger in diameter, albeit less “sharp”, which makes seeing the laser on your screen easier. It really is better than an intensely bright tiny spot. And as compared to the Kensington pointer device I recently reviewed, Kensington 33374 Wireless Presenter with Laser Pointer, it was much brighter overall thus more effective.

One of my favorite and most useful features of the R800 is the timer function. Not only do you get a visual indication of the relative amount of time left, by a series of gradually diminishing lines, you also get a silent vibration in the device at 5, 2 and 0 minute markers. This is so handy and helpful that it has become indispensable to me.

The USB receiver stores nicely inside the R800.

I have used the R800 on my PC ACER laptop with no issues.

Concerning Apple computers however, Logitech does not officially state that this is meant for use on a Mac. However it will work with most Macs as best I can determine. I’ve tried it with four different Macs.

On my 24″, 2.16GHz iMac with Snow Leopard (and previously with Leopard) operating system, it did not work at all. But then I read about a possible conflict with the Logitech Control Center which is used for controlling Logitech keyboards, mice, trackballs, etc. I happen to use the Logitech Marble Mouse with my iMac and had the Logitech Control Center v3.10 control panel installed. When I plugged the USB receiver into my USB port, it was not recognized and thus the R800 did not work with the iMac. However, as soon as I uninstalled the LCC software (using the uninstaller that was in my Utilities folder) the R800 receiver did work.

It also worked perfectly using IBM’s Lotus Symphony presentation software with my 2.4GHz MacBook running Snow Leopard.

On an old 1.6GHz PPC G4 iMac running OSX 10.5.8 and PowerPoint from Microsoft Office 2004, it worked except for the start presentation button. But manually starting the presentation then using the R800 to go forward and backward worked. With Neo-Office v3.0, it worked perfectly… even the start presentation button.

I also tried on a 1.2GHz PPC G4 iBook with OSX 10.5.8 and it also worked just like on the old iMac with Microsoft Office 2004.

Whether the start presentation button works or not seems to depend on the application you use for the presentation rather than the model of computer you are using.

Bottom line is check before you buy or it may not work with your particular Mac, though it does work on the all of the ones I tried it with. If it does not work on your Mac, then check to see if you have Logitech Control Center installed (check your System Preferences panel > Other)

Logitech should be more forthcoming with the actual state of affairs as it pertains to Mac compatibility and compatibility with Logitech Control Center software but in the meantime, don’t assume it will work unless you can corroborate that with someone who has already had success with it on a Mac using the same model.

The only major omission in my opinion is the lack of backlighting on the R800 LCD display. It would be desirable to have backlighting on the unit when operating in dimly lit rooms.

This is a wonderful little device that stands heads and shoulders above its competition such as the Kensington Wireless Presenter Kensington 33374 Wireless Presenter with Laser Pointer. However it costs nearly twice as much as the Kensington. For my money, it’s worth the extra cost as it has a better ergonomic design and more useful features.

I give it a solid 4 stars. Why not 5 stars? Because it really needs a backlit display and it is quite extraordinary to me that the Logitech R800 device is incompatible with Logitechs’ own Logitech Control Center software on the Mac. Nevertheless, this is one terrific pointing/timing/control device for presentations.

Fatal Flaw1
I had to return this to the manufacturer for a refund. Why? There is a button called “start presentation” that alternately generates an ESC and F5.the ESC takes you out of presentation mode, the F5 restarts the presentation from the beginning. This button is very near the “back” button and I accidentally push it approximately once an hour. This completely messes up my presentation - and there is no way to disable the button. Thus I cannot use this during a professional presentation - it is just about guaranteed to create an unprofessional event for me, and I do presentations for a living. So as much as I love every other part of this device, I had returned it to Logitec and ask my money back.

Customer Reviews:

Not bad, decent value, but a few flaws4
[Edit: Upgrade from 3.5 to 4.2 stars; see below]

After my poor experience with the Phillips GoGear mp3 player (reviewed here last week), I thought I’d see what Sony can do with an mp3 player.

I bought their first (excellent) FM walkman in 1980 but haven’t used one of their portables since. I am in general a Sony fan, and my 1986 Trinitron is still running like new. Gotta love that kind of quality! But do they still have it?

First, the good:

-Excellent battery life: 30 hours for music, and it does get close to that if you don’t do much scrolling. Nice.

-Lots of gigs for a c-note: about 6 bucks per gig, once you realize that it’s only 14.4 gb. I hate the way companies do that, btw. Don’t tell me I’m getting 16 gigs and then give me ten percent less. Be honest! Stuff like that loses customers, savvy ones at least.

-Good sound…but with that traditional Sony eq curve: very flat. I’ve had a few Sony receivers and cd players and tape decks over the years, and they are all very flat across the ranges. This makes for nice tight bass and decent mids, but the top end is always a little compressed and lacks shimmer and overtones.
Still, a solid tone, not tinny.

-You can use folders, saves a lot of scrolling time. Put jazz, metal, etc into their own folders. Nice. Any smart mp3 player does this.

-Nice, simple drag and drop of files right out of the box, with no need to install the software. That’s sweetness, because almost every problem I’ve had with mp3 players stems from badly written software, and avoiding the need for it altogether is preferable. If you can avoid installing your included software for any player, do it; it only causes hassles in the long run unless you need a certain feature. Drag and drop is where it’s at: quick, simple, efficient. And no adware etc installed surreptitiously by the software cd, a newly common scam.

-Gets good and loud. Helps with certain headphones. Sounds good on my Koss PortaPros and great on my AKG K701s. The phones that come with this are cheese, as usual. Buds will never compare to real cans.

-Excellent for running, my main use for mp3 players. It hasn’t skipped on me once and can take all sorts of shaking and bouncing. Very nice.

-Very thin, light, sleek. Takes up almost no space in any pocket, purse, etc.

-A strange design touch that I haven’t seen anyone mention, but which struck me right off: the control buttons on the front panel are shaped almost precisely like Mickey Mouse’s head! This can’t be coincidence; surely someone in design did this on purpose. So is Sony in bed with the Mouse, or what’s up? In any case, sometimes I see it and hear Mickey’s estrogenic squeal in my inner ear saying, “Pluto! Punch me in the nose and let’s get this party started!”

-Along with the essential external volume buttons, there’s a manual lock switch on the side of the unit. Very useful to not have to scroll to make this go on and off. A good design feature that all mp3 players should have. You might want to use this when it’s off and in your pocket, as the unit turns on with only minor presssure on the front panel button…but that leads to:

-Another major plus, this unit starts playing exactly where the last tune you were playing stopped, in about a half second after the button is touched. Some players take ten seconds. This baby rips right into the music in a flash (literally; flash drive players have so many advantages). Excellent.

But, the bad:

-the screen is waaay thin; it’s already covered with scratches after only a few days in my empty pocket. Not good. I don’t care about the aesthetics, but do need to see the screen!

-to ff or rewind quickly, you must first pause the track: took me a while to figure this out. Not a big con, but could have been been done without needing to pause.

-and the one thing that will make me return this item next week: you can’t delete songs or files from the player. You must first hook it up to a computer! Terrible design. My years-old Muvo deletes on the fly, as do my Dell DJ and other players. This is a huge mistake: with 4,000 songs, how can I remember all the ones I need to dump? Very major flaw, and a deal breaker for me.

But, for those who only transfer stuff they already know and love, this is a pretty darn decent player. I don’t know who wants to watch movies or vids on a thumbnail-sized screen, but as a music player, this offers good sound and plenty of storage for a good price.

At this rate we’ll get a terabyte for a c-note within a couple years.
Can’t wait! Then we can put everything on in lossless FLAC files, the only real way to go. MP3 is okay, but still a compromise.

Hey Sony: not bad…but how can you leave out such a huge feature as deleting on the fly?

[Edit: 12/30/09. I now have to give this little thang a little more than four stars...and hooray to Amazoon's code writers: we can now finally change our ratings after the original review. I returned my original to the mallwart (so nice of them to let us try stuff out! And so unfortunate they can't pay living wages so I might feel bad about costing them restocking fees...), but after looking around for a few weeks I realized this Sony unit offers far more bang for the buck than any other mp3 player out there. So I picked one up here, saving twenty over the mallwart price, and am very happy with it, barring the above caveats.

The best way to deal with no delete feature seems to be to mark the tracks you don't dig with the "wishlist" feature on the options screen, and then when you charge the unit you can open the files and delete tunes you've wishlisted. Much more hassle than deleting on the fly, but at least a workable solution to my main negative about the product.

If Sony releases a firmware update that lets us delete on the fly (not sure if that's possible or not; hope so), then I'd have to give this thing an almost perfect rating.

Pair it with Koss Portapros and you will be blown away by the sound.]

Excellent First Impression5
I’ve only had this puppy for a day, so I can’t comment on the very important subject of its reliability. Also, I don’t have much interest in using the Walkman for video replay, so I don’t have much to say about that, either. But my first impression is favorable. The design is sleek, the controls are intuitive, the interface is efficient, and at 16GB the storage capacity is as large as you’ll get in a sub-compact flash drive player. The FM radio tuner is surprisingly sensitive.

The obvious point of comparison is to the iPod Nano, which also comes in a 16GB version. The Walkman is a bit wider, thicker, and heavier than the Nano, but it’s also a bit shorter. There are three big differences in my view: the Walkman has a radio, it has much better audio quality and it’s significantly less expensive. To me those differences are absolutely decisive, especially the difference in audio reproduction: It takes the Sony to make you realize how truly mediocre iPod sound is.

If you want this thing primarily as a sub-compact MP3 player for listening to music I can recommend it based on a brief acquaintance so far. I’d also recommend springing for a really good set of earbuds (Shure, Ultimate Ear, and Etymotic are among the better producers). The earbuds shipped with the Walkman or an iPod are pretty miserable.

Great sound marred by bad install software3
I almost hate to give this thing only three stars because it has great
sound and hardware features. One the other hand the Sony Windows installer is so bad
it deserves negative stars. But there is a workaround - just use simple drag and drop,
and don’t even run the Sony install or media software on your windows machines.

Since Sony’s famous root kit fiasco (Google “sony rootkit lawsuit”)
infected thousands of customers computers via anti-consumer software,
I should have known better than to ever
let Sony software run on my PC. But I wanted to get my new MP3 player to
working fast, so I followed Sony’s instructions. Bad idea!!! They want
you to plug the Sony into a USB port and then run the install
software that’s already in the Sony. I tried this on my old XP (SP2)
machine, and the Sony installation tried to “upgrade” my windows Media
player. There was no benefit to me for this “upgrade”, Sony’s
“engineers” we apparently too lazy to design an installer without this. Or
maybe they’re still trying to infect their customers with rootkits.

Anyway, the install of the new MS media player failed, and in the deal
corrupted my old MS-media player. Since I primarily use VLC media
player the was just just an annoyance, not a fatal problem - but now my
old XP PC has no MS media player. Thanks, Sony :-(

Being stubborn (and a geek) I then decided to examine the Sony MP3 player a
bit more carefully on my work Windows-7 machine. The Sony mounted as a
USB device named “Walkman”, but instead of just running Sony’s toxic
installer again, I poked around in their file system and found
the music folder. It had a few mp3 files in it, so I decided to see
what would happen if I copied in a few more mp3 files. I did a drag &
drop with windows explorer, the Sony rebuilt the playlist with them.
There they were, playable - it worked! I then select all my mp3 files, about a
100, and dragged them over. Thanks to the magic of USB 2.0, in 10
minutes I had 100 tunes loaded - without running any Sony Windows software. They
all list and play just fine. Why did Sony provide that destructive
install and “Content Transfer” software when you can just drag & drop
files? Why not just tell customers how to load up the files in one easy
step like I did? Write a simple GUI for those who want elaborate
play-lists or auto-synch with an online service, and let the rest
of us just load & go.

But once I had some files in place I discovered the upside of this
device - It sounds great! My kids all have iPods, and this thing sounded
at least as good right out of the box, and at a fraction of the price.
I’m something of an audiophile and plan to experiment with upgrade ear
buds (the ones that come with it are pretty tinny) and maybe a headphone
amp. Just for grins, I put a pair of Sennheiser HD280 studio headphones
on the Sony - and it sounded really good! Like most MP3s the highs where
a bit slurred and mushy, but the mids and bass were clear and as loud as
I could want, even without a phones amp. The dinky Sony could drive the
large form-factor Sennheisers just fine :-). The better MP3s sound
almost like WAV files played on real high-end audio equipment. I’m
optimistic than when I get some lossless formats in there I’ll have a
really good sound.

I’ve tried hooking my kids iPods (Nano and classic) to real stereo
equipment and never had results like this. The Sony/Sennheiser combo
beats the pants off any iPod I’ve heard hooked to anything.

When I was done setting it up I unplugged the USB I’d been using to
charge the battery, and tossed the player in my backpack, without
thinking to turn it off. That night I got another nice surprise - it was
still playing (4 hours later) and the battery was still fully charged.
I’m not sure how many hours they claim, but I didn’t really believe I’d
get more than 5 or so in actual use. I’m now sure I’ll get 10 or more.

In fairness to Sony, I must add that we’ve also had Apple software
nightmares with my kids iPods, like the time one kid went to
“synchronize” and iTunes erased her entire mp3 collection. She was
in tears! I write software for a living, and bugs like Sony
and Apple have should never get past QA.

Bottom line is this unit will give you great sound for cheap; but you
have to be either very lucky or willing to move files manually to use
it safely.

Customer Reviews:

Zeikos vs Nikon I Can’t Tell Them Apart!!!5
I put the Zeikos ZE-NBG90 grip next to the Nikon grip for my D200 and if you cover the names, I guarantee you can not tell them apart. The only difference is the D200 is slightly larger because the base of the D200 is wider than the D90’s.(Gee,,, I wonder Nikon didn’t make them the same size???) All the controls perform the same functions with no differences in feel, operation or location. As others have stated, it matches up to the base of the D90 seamlessly. Even the holders for the AA batteries are identical… So save yourself $90, unless your name brand crazy and buy the Zeikos!!!! I’m finding many of the after market accessories for Nikon cameras are not only far less expensive but work just as well….. I’m tired of every time I buy a new Nikon camera, I have to pay their outrageous prices for new accessories, especially since it would not take much effort on the engineers part to make them compatible!!!!! It’s just another way to make money and it’s a rip-off!!! Do yourself a favor and buy this Zeikos grip over the Nikon Brand…. Amazon has one of if not the best price…

Good value for your money4
I’ll go straight to my points

PROS
- Easy to install, no brainer
- Perfect fit with the D90
- It’s the closest and best thing you could get to an MB-D80 for about $70… sweet
- Works as expected

CONS
- There is a delay in response when turning the dials, but not to the point that it will annoy you.
- The material (plastic) could have been sturdier if they made it a little thicker.
- The dials of the D90 and this grip are not of the same feel.

Overall, I am still pretty satisfied with this product considering how much I paid for it. The most important thing
is, IT WORKS PERFECTLY.

Good Match5
The Zeikos matched well with the D90 and worked as advertised. No problems setting it up or operating it. Handles wells and it does not feel as if it is going fall out of your hand, and it looks good attached to the D90 as well. It is also cost less than the Nikon’s, and basically works for less. At this point, I have got to give a five.
