Customer Reviews:

Great Buy!5
Just in case you wanted to buy Belkin Slim Backpack- don’t… This one is way better! The material is very good quality, will last forever, unlike the slim backpack that is made of neoprene. Plus this one is as slim and lite and looks as good.
There are two main compartments inside and a zipper pocket outside. The laltop compartment is padded for better protection, it won’t feet a 17″, only 15″ or smaller. Second compartment is spacious enough for a book or two and it also has a pen holder, a smaller zipper pocket and a couple other things that will hold small items. You also get a removable pouch that easily fits charger which is convinient.
The straps of this backpack are padded as well and are adjustable.
Great buy overall: looks good, functional and priced right.

An excellent bag, for a great price5
Well I was looking for a quality bag at an affordable price, seeing that I had just bought a 13′Macbook and wanted to protect it, but just couldn’t pay a lot. This bag was perfect. It fits my computer just fine and it’s well protected now, plus it’s got space for a couple things including the charger, adapters and most things you’ll probably want. It looks good, it feels good and you barely feel the weight. Only had it for a couple weeks but looks very durable too Overall a great buy, if somehow I lost mine I would definitely buy it again.

Perfect for Laptop, and fits a large textbook with binder.5
When I read the other views, I was expecting a much smaller backpack. This one was a surprisingly good size and I can fit my 15 Macbook Pro easily, with room for a thick textbook and binder. It’s really heavy with all that stuff but still doable. I love the little pouch it comes with, and I’ll use this as a backpack for college. The backpack is comfortable and I like the simple color and design. Unless you want a huge backpack that looks like your going hiking, I think this would be perfect for a laptop and a few notebooks for class.

Customer Reviews:

Comprehensive, intuitive and convenient5
I had been thinking about buying an electronic dictionary since they first appeared on the market. I knew pretty much what I wanted in a device but until now, I’ve found them all wanting in some area that was important to me. This device is absolutely perfect for my needs. These are the attributes that I was looking for, in roughly most important to least important order:

It had to be easy and intuitive to use
It had to have a very comprehensive dictionary and thesaurus
It had to show (not speak) pronunciation
It had to be non-invasive (imagine using one of the speaking dictionaries in a classroom or library setting)
It had to be reasonably priced

The PW-E550 meets all of these requirements.

At the time I was considering the PW-E550 I was reading two books: “Being And Nothingness” by Sarte and “How To Be Alone” by Jonathan Franzen (as an aside, if you’re not familiar with Jonathan Franzen I highly recommend checking him out). I decided to page through each book and write down a short list of words that I either did not know the meaning of, or was unclear of. I then took that list of words to my local bookstore, found the hardcopy version of “The New Oxford American Dictionary” and looked up my words. With the minor exception of “transphenomenal”, I found all of my words in some form (with “transphenomenal” I was able to find “phenomenal”, “phenomena” and “trans-”).

To give you an idea of what I was looking for I unashamedly present my word list:

nihilates, transphenomenal, ontological, heterogeneity, facticity, thematized, interiorization, objectivation, vagaries, preponderant, exigencies, isolationism, milieu, preemption, multilateralism

When I received the PW-E550 the first thing I did was to recheck my word list. My experience was better than I expected. Not only did I find the same words and definitions, I didn’t have to glance at the manual at all to figure out what to do. I just pressed the “DICT” button, typed my word and watched the list of words that matched my typing get smaller until my word (or a form of it) was displayed.

The screen has two zoom settings and the contrast makes the display easy to read. The entire unit could fit comfortably into a shirt pocket (both size and weight). The fact that it uses a single AAA battery (as a previous reviewer mentioned) is a real plus.

There was one feature that I did not think about until I started using the device - it would be nice if, when looking at a definition, I could look up any of the words in the definition without losing my place. That’s when I picked up the manual and much to my delight I discovered the device can do this (they call it “Super Jump”). It’s not as intuitive as the other features but once you’ve used it, it becomes obvious. Finally, the hardcopy version of the dictionary has pictures on some pages but the E550 does not. Again, not an issue for me.

I would like to comment on an earlier review where the author gave this unit a one star review. She complained that the PW-E550 is a dumbed-down version of the PW-E500. By dumbed-down, she meant it had fewer words than the E550. This is true. However, the PW-E500 uses the “Oxford English Dictionary” and its corresponding “New Oxford Thesaurus”. That dictionary gives both English (as in England) and American definitions, likewise the thesaurus. This would be a personal choice. I don’t need to see both “color” and “colour” in my dictionary but that’s just me. To me it was like she was saying that she thinks a Jaguar is a better car than a Cadillac therefore a Cadillac is a lousy car. This is a great reference tool.

If you have any doubts about the contents of this unit, go look at the hardcopy versions. I am very impressed and absolutely delighted that I have such a simple yet comprehensive reference sitting on the arm of my chair as I read.

The best portable reference I’ve found so far5
I’m a big electronic dictionary geek - I own four of them. Two of them for languages (Japanese and Chinese) and two for English. I’m a writer and I am constantly reading and looking up words, and I like to be able to do away from my computer because honestly, who wants to lug around a laptop when they just want to take a book out to a coffeeshop?

I own both the Merriam-Webster 11th Collegiate Speaking Dictionary (with a Concise Columbia Encyclopedia card) and the Sharp PW-E550. I owned the Merriam-Webster first, then bought this one, and actually bought the Seiko Concise Encyclopedia Britannica for a while before I returned that one. Here’s a comparison between the two, and a little mention of the last one:

- Both have a similar range of definitions. There are some words I could find in the MW I couldn’t in the Sharp (McGuffin), and there are some I could find in the Sharp but not the MW (phylogenic, the Bowery). I find that the MW tends to have slightly more in-depth definitions and the Sharp one reads a bit more concise and colloquial. The Sharp does provide examples of usage while the MW doesn’t.

- The MW doesn’t have a visual pronounciation key, while the Sharp does. That’s because the MW speaks out the words. This to me was kind of silly because you don’t always want to hear the words out loud (like, in a library, or just about anywhere public), even if they included a headphone jack. What became problematic was that the speaking gizmo on my MW broke after a few months, and now I can’t even hear the pronounciation even if I want to.

- The Sharp will list all the words possible with each input of a letter (i.e., if you punch in “a” it’ll list all the words that begin with “a,” then if you punch in “b” it’ll list all the words that begin with “ab” until you get to the word you want. The MW waits until you input all the letters and hit “enter,” then it searches until it finds something. It takes about a second or two for it to find something that is in its dictionary, but if you punched in something with the wrong spelling or it just doesn’t know, it’ll take a while, maybe five seconds, which gets kind of exasperating, especially once you get used to the Sharp.

- The Sharp, when you turn it on, displays exactly what you had when you last had it on. The MW always starts with the same default screen. The Sharp also has a memory feature, that goes back some forty or so of your last entries.

- The buttons on the MW are hard and they hurt after prolonged usage. The buttons on the Sharp are pretty soft, which ends up with the opposite problem, you may not push hard enough on them at times.

- The Concise Encyclopedia that came with the MW is extremely painful to use. It’s slower than the dictionary and when you do page up or page down it often goes straight to the previous or next entry. Otherwise it provides some decent amount of information at your fingertips. I’m just afraid of the tediousness of it all.

- The leather flip cover for the MW is really flimsy, while the Sharp is neatly self-protecting. I also like how you can open the whole thing 180 degrees, which is something the Seiko can’t do. The Seiko only opens up to about 135 degrees, which might seem adequate until you get used to the Sharp.

- The games that come with the MW aren’t so great. I like the idea of creating your own wordlist, but it barely takes any, maybe 20 maximum. After playing with them a bit my first week with the MW, I stopped using the game function.

- The Sharp has a grammar guide that I hardly ever use. I suppose it could be handy, but it just feels impractical.

For a long while I carried around both the MW and the Sharp, with Sharp being my first resource then, if I have to, the MW, and if I really have to, the Concise Encyclopedia in the MW. After a while I just ditched the MW and now I only use the Sharp. It is a far better experience, and it’s become an indispensible tool. The Seiko I was really excited to check out, but for the price I was quite disappointed. The user experience, while better than the MW, pales compared to the Sharp. The entries in the Seiko are great, a lot of information and depth, but most of the terms in there are in the Sharp anyway, just not with as much detail. For $180, I decided I could just stick with the Sharp for basic concepts on the proper nouns, and head to my laptop when I want more in-depth detail.

Overall, I recommend anyone with a remote interest in having an English electronic dictionary to go with the Sharp. It’s the best portable reference I’ve found so far.

Excellent product5
The Sharp PW-E550 is an excellent product. It is just slightly larger than a deck of cards when closed. It has two font sizes. The smaller one is perfectly readable for me and offers sufficient content on the screen. It performs amazingly well, very quick, and has so far had all the words I needed to look up.

As one person mentioned, spend a few minutes going through the manual as there are a couple of features that are not readily apparent but are very useful. The Super Jump feature being the most notable, which allows you to lookup the definition of a word within a definition.

The Sharp PW-E550 does everything I wanted it to do and more. A great buy.

Customer Reviews:

Excellent Iphone dock clock radio5
Like the previous reviewer, I also went to a brick and mortar store to buy the previous model, which was on the display, but the inventory was for this unit, billed as a slightly newer replacement unit by Sony. This unit fixes two complaints from the previoous model: 1) the Iphone no longer sits above the snooze button; 2) the clock is far less cluttered and the display is larger and easier to see.

What really amazed me when I took it home and set it up was the sound quality. I currently have the Ihome IP9 and IP99. One of my IP9 units failed after about 10 months, so I bought this Sony unit to replace it. This unit is so much better in sound quality than the Ihome! I can’t believe how great the sound is from such a small and inexpensive device. In addition, my Iphone fits snugly into this unit without any adapters, and I do not have to remove my protective case to properly dock it. I think Sony fixed the majority of complaints quite successfully with this new unit, and I am very pleased to have purchased it. I strongly recommend it over the Ihome units.

Excellent sound & functions. Could use better iPhone/Touch docking.4
I wanted to replace my clock radio for one that charges my iPod Touch & has decent sound. After sampling several models at the Apple Store & researching online, I picked this one. As a note, there is a previous model of this unit & there are some major differences. Since both are still available as of 1/14/10, you might want to decide which one works better for you. The differences are:
-The old one was shorter, designed for regular ipods. The Touch & the iPhone stuck out higher then the radio, which meant when reaching for the snooze or other buttons, you may hit the iphone/touch and knock it off.
-The old one has a smaller clock display.
-The old one had a BETTER ipod dock. It actually had a rest behind where the ipod stands, which could be adjusted from the back to go in or out. This to me was an amazing & rather unique solution.

The one I bought, the new one described in this item listing, has a bigger clock display & is taller so the touch and iphone no longer stick out on top. However, the dock no longer has the adjustable backrest like the older model. Instead, it comes with 2 plates, one for the iphone, one for the Touch. If you have another ipod, you’ll have to bring your own dock plate.

The main problem with this dock plate solution is that my Touch doesn’t fit with the protective case on (I use an Agent 18). Since taking the Touch out of the case everyday is not something I wish to do, I have to use this without any dock plates. The problem with that is the only support the Touch has is the dock port. This is obviously not a good thing in the long term. It makes using the Touch while it is docked a 2 hand operation; one to stabilize the Touch & keep it from pushing back & the other hand to make the adjustments. This is doubly frustrating since they had a much better docking solution in the older model.

I plan on glueing a piece of foam or other material on the radio behind where the Touch would be to support it.

Even with this caveat, I would still recommend this Sony. The price to benefit ratio, to me at least, is great. The sound quality and clock radio functions are excellent, especially when you factor in the price you paid.

Things I like:
-Excellent sound
-Lots of options for the clock radio; 2 alarms, different days of the week, can wake up to ipod, buzzer, or clock.
-Sleep function also works with listening to iPod
-Comes with external AM & FM antennas. Picks up stations I listen to without a problem.
-Electronic tuning for radio stations with presets
-Plays Pandora & other sound apps through the system also
-Buzzer for alarm works great. Starts off slow and low volume. Then increases in intensity after every hit of the Snooze bar.
-Clock auto sets & remembers time if unplugged. Only have to set time zone when you first set it up.
-Remote works with iPod and has decent range.

Things I don’t like:
-Docking solution is a regression compared to the older model

Overall, I recommend this unit. If you don’t use a case with your iPhone or Touch, than it would get 5 stars, IMO.

Great system!5
I am very happy with this system…first I have been a long time fan of Sony and since this model was astetically appealing to me I took a chance and ordered it. It arrived today and right out of the box it was very simple to set up. One thing that surprised me was to dock my iPhone I was concerned I would have to remove my bulky case. Wrong…the big cushy rubber case and all fits nicely in the docking station. This means I can just grab it and go!

The sound is pretty darn good. Sure, my stereo system is better but would you expect it to be THAT good?? I LOVE that I can now listem to Pandora, NPR, Podcasts and more with such a great sound. Plus it charges while it’s playing…what more could you want?

The clock has three settings for brightness…one of them is off so don’t be concerned about it being too bright at night. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:

Making a case for LG; amazing tv.5
LG does’nt get enough praise.

Just bought this TV for the sake of it being an IPS panel and for its apparent adjustability (and also 1080p). Plus this tv is so easy to calibrate; the ‘picture wizard’ is extremely helpful.

The amount of menu options is jaw-dropping, as is the style of the set. The LH40 model looks neat with the plastic square along the bottom of the panel, but I like the more minimalist look of the LH30, and I do not like the 120hz or the $100 price jump of the LH40.

I made a comparison to my sony 32M4000 (which I have now given to my father) and there are some interesting differences (many are polar opposites):

-The sound is far superior on the LG.

-Black levels are very close, sony’s is a bit deeper and maintains black colors better at angles.

-The whiteness of whites is slightly better on the sony, but colors and mid tones definitely have more of a ‘punchy’ factor on the LG.

-Color is amazing; rich and saturated; best ive seen on any LCD, period.

-Color does not wash out at all from different angles, only very dark colors and black tend to become discolored (blue or red depending on the angle).

-Of course there are far, far fewer picture options on the sony.

-My sony has a ghosting problem with dark colors, not so on the LG; motion blur and lag is also reduced too.

-OTA HD channels look decent enough, not as sharp as the sony, but the better color makes up for it imo.

What was the main factor that made me get this LG?..its S-IPS panel.

Samsung is an excellent maker of lcds, but I steered clear of them this time, as buying a tv from them is like playing the lottery. They use 3 different panels with differing levels of color and contrast quality; you are not essentially getting what you pay for:

You may get Samsung’s own S-PVA panel, the best quality (if you’re lucky).

An A-MVA panel from Taiwan’s AUO (a notch worse than S-PVA).

Chinese company Chi Mei’s S-MVA panel (worst of the three).

Panasonics IPS Alpha panels are decent, but on some panels dark colors appear far too blue from different angles.

That narrows it down to LG’s S-IPS panel; its color saturation, vividness, and response time are worth the slight sacrifice in contrast and black depth (at least in my opinion).

This tv is not perfect, however; I spotted 3 dead pixels right out of the box (2 bright, 1 dark), right around the middle of the screen. They are practically invisible without being a foot from the screen and looking hard for them, however.

Viewing angles demonstrate some darkening of the picture, but its not too bothersome (swivel stand helps).

No other flaws I can think of at the moment, I recommend this tv!

My calibration settings use color adjustments from cnet.com along with some of my own tweaks, try them out!

Okay, but not great3
I purchased this TV from Amazon supplier Tiger Direct based on Amazon reviews in early November 2009. We have a two year old 32″ Samsung HD LCD TV that we were moving to another room and the LG TV was purchased to replace to older TV. My wife and I both found the quality of the picture to be inferior to the Samsung. Moreover, the biggest problem with the LG TV was the deterioration in picture quality with viewing angle. The LG also seemed to have a slight problem keeping audio and video in sync on a few programs, somthing we had not noted in our other TVs (we have four flat panel TVs in all - only one is HD) Given the room we planned to place it in required a wide viewing angle, we returned the TV.

Excellent Economy HDTV5
The LG 32LH30 32-Inch 1080p replaced a 720p 32 inch Samsung which I returned because of erratic sound quality. The LG provides a very clear picture for upscaled DVD movies and over the air digital signals. The speakers provide excellent sound for a small living room although the addition of a home theater system would substantially increase movie enjoyment. Standard definition signals also reproduce a stable clear picture. Colors are very good and the set provides sufficient tools to tweak the picture for personal preference. I have not used it for bluray as yet but HD from satellite is very good. The features of this unit described on the Amazon specifications list accurately describe its features and can be relied upon. I am not a hard core cinema/video buff but I cannot imagine that this unit will not satisfy most viewers who want a well priced midsized flat screen high definition TV. My five stars are based upon what I expect in similarly designed and priced units for a smaller room.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels.  So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.  If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.
  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

Pleased5
What a savings! I am very pleased with these ink cartridges they look and print like a Canon. I recieved my package one day before est delivery date.I will be a returning customer.

Just great so far!4
I had slightly less problems with the installation
so far than with the canon cartridges. The packaging
was basic, just plastic. Environmentally better.
Safety tabs were more complicated. Quality of ink
seems just as good from what
I can tell.

Chip and Cartridge Work5
I have a cannon MP500 and bought this set. The cartridges work very well- not much streaking as far as I can tell- and the printer recognized the chips on the cartridge.

A Good Choice for HDC-SD55
The battery runs my HDC-SD5 for a full 1.5 plus hours. Just as advertised.

It’s a BATTERY - NOT GOLD…2
Amazingly overpriced for a battery that basically runs my HDC-HC1 for a little over an hour.

Can you say “stick ‘em up”???

Follow up: This battery’s price has finally fallen by about 50 percent to it’s current $55 +/- price now listed here. When my original review was written the going rate was around $120 IF you could find them.

BEWARE of Panasonic. *Research well* before you buy. While their prosumer line is excellent, they have no qualms whatsoever about high prices and short supplies on basic accessories for units like these.

The right tool for the job :-) 5
I was looking for two spare battery packs at a good deal price for my new Panasonic mini DVD camcorder model VDR-D50P. I have used after market products before with excellent results. I chose this battery and ordered two of them. They were listed as repalcements for my model.Panasonic CGR-DU06A/1B Rechargable Battery for most Panasonic Camcorders THEY DO NOT FIT. Panasonic has changed ever so slightly the size of the bracket the batttery mounts into on the cam and the charger. I was able to return the batteries to the company for a refund. After futher research on the Panasonic battery I needed, I returned to Amazon with a Panasonic part number (VW-VBG130). I did a search and it came back with more of the same thing I had bought before that did not fit. However, in the mix were several companies that listed the battery as this part number and as being an ORIGINAL, Panasonic part. This battery sells locally for AROUND $125.00 but I found it on Amazon for $55.00 plus shipping but NO TAX. I ordered two of them and they indeed are Panasonic batteries with the correct part number and they fit my camcorder. Here’s the AMAZON.COM link to the CORRECT battery For the Panasonic VDR-D50P camcorder; http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000SCUWOY/ref=dp_olp_2

BY THE WAY, the link shown at the right of this review is the link to the correct battery for the VDR-D50P Panasonic. To get to the $55.00 price look down a little and to the right of the ZOOM option for the photo of the battery. you will see the link to the dealers selling them for $55.00 or so. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you contact the company before buying to get a gut feeling for the company and their attitude before you order, there are usually several optional companies selling the item if you don’t get that desired “fuzzy” feeling at first.

Apparently the so called “after market” has not caught up with the fact that Panasonic has changed the mounting bracket size sligtly for the newer size batteries. This was indicated by the dealer when I returned my original purchase. I’m sure in time they will discover this change and produce the correct battery. For now, 9-30-08, apparently we have to use the ORIGINAL.

NOTE: The battery, VW-VBG130, also fits the New Panasonic SD memory card type camcorders also. I did some research on this. With the new SD card camcorders this battery will run the cam for about 60 to 70 minutes. On the mini DVD recorders like mine you will get about 50 minutes because the battery is having to move the laser head and mechanism as well as the motor that spins the DVD itself.

By the way, at this writing, 9-30-2008, there are some good deals to be had on the nice Panasonic SD card camcorders from last years models which are wonderful units and got very high user ratings. The newer units this year have no appreciable improvements over last year’s model. Try looking at circuitcity.com in the “OUTLET” section. If you do not see the “OUTLET” link on the main page, simply type OUTLET in the search bar and click GO and presto you will be there and you can do a search for Panasonic Camcorders. The nice THREE CHIP model HDC-HD5 is below $500.00 at this time (9-30-2008) when you put it in your shopping cart. Wish I had one :-)

Cmple - Premium Quality HDMI Gold Plated Cable 30 Ft Feet with Ferrite Cores Description:

This HDMI cable are dual shielded to protect from RFI and EMI. RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) are signals that interfere with other electronics. It protects from radio frequencies that can distort the signal as it arrives to the receiver. This can cause background noise to your audio or even distort your picture. Dual shielding provides protection from RFI while giving you the comfort of pure sound and video. Each HDMI cable is pressurized to give the clearest signal possible. Typical cables are produced by using several strands of copper to form one single cable. If the strands aren’t pressurized, they can leave pockets of air which cause oxidation and eventually degrade the signal. When the cables are pressure stranded they perform better and last longer.Saaria Projector Screen HDMI cable are produced to provide pure digital signals without distortion or loss in signal. They are made with Mylar foil to provide the best insulation possible. Don’t settle for less when selecting your digital cables.

Outstanding Value!5
I recently bought a new HP desktop computer with HDMI output and thought about connecting it to my 40 inch 1080i LG HDMI TV in addition to my monitor so that I could view pictures and programs that I recorded on the computer as well as DVD’s. The only problem was that my PC sits on the other side of the room from the TV and HDMI cables are outrageously expensive even for short runs.

On some advice from a friend I looked online to see if I could find something reasonable and decided to give this cable a try. For $20 bucks I figured it was worth a shot. I was a little concerned about running the signal over 30 feet but I am extremely pleased with the results. The picture on my TV is just as good as my 20 inch widescreen monitor. I’ve tested the connection with pictures using Photoshop. I also viewed DVD’s and video streamed over the Internet. The picture is outstanding and the sound is flawless. My TV is connected to my surround sound receiver so now I can even play music through my TV and to my receiver and the sound is excellent.

The cable itself is also quite pliable so there is no problem running it over doorways.

The vendor I purchased this cable from is different from the one I now see on the site so I can’t say anything about this vendor, but as far as the product is concerned it is well worth the price. If there is anything I could complain about is that it would be nice if it came in white. Otherwise this was a great deal!

Does what you need an HDMI cable to do5
This cable is used to connect our projector (Optoma HD20) to our AVR (Pioneer VSX-919AH-K). We have no trouble getting a 1080p 60Hz (1080/60p) picture; no issues with signal quality at all. It’s easily a Category 2 cable.

I think it’s very significant that the HDMI cable runs parallel to a bunch of low voltage wires and a single high voltage one. It’s along side the 2 rear speaker wires, and a composite (3 RCA wires)—the low voltage wires. The high voltage (120v) powers the projector and is in a non-shielded PVC conduit that’s about 6″-12″ away. In any case, I think it speaks to the quality of this HDMI cable. There is no need to waste an extra 100-150 paying for a brand name.

GOOD QUALITY5

Customer Reviews:

Finally, a reliable wireless router!5
The Belkin wireless N+ router is the third wireless router I have purchased over the last five years. I have a three story house and the router is located on the first floor. The earlier routers did not cover the entire house and I had to use a wireless repeater. More importantly, these earlier routers were always having to be reset, sometimes on a daily basis. This new Belkin router has taken care of both problems. It gives a substantially stronger signal and I do not need the repeater any longer. More importantly, is has been absolutely reliable. I have not had any problems since plugging it in a month ago. Set up was a breeze. I am one totally-happy camper!

Great product…with issues. UPDATE4
UPDATED 12/13

What does my title mean?

I was running a wireless G home network with a Linksys router (in fact, I have a review on that router!). I was happy with my setup but I wanted to upgrade to wireless N and maximize the throughput on my devices. For the record I have:

- Personal laptop
- Work laptop
- Nintendo Wii
- Xbox 360
- PS3
- DirecTV HR20
- Sony PSP
- Nintendo DS
- Dell media server

Running on my home network. Of those devices, the 360, HR20 and media server are connected via Ethernet. I’d researched the viability of going to a Gigabit network. For those that aren’t aware, basic Ethernet is capable of a maximum of 100Mbps throughput. You can imagine that might be a bit of a problem when you’re streaming HD movies across your server. I also noticed a significant performance impact when attempting to use my internet connection at the same time as browsing my local network, probably due to the fact that it’s not a dual band router. But it was severely annoying to me and I decided to go shopping.

I noticed this router down at BBuy, for just shy of $120. It seemed quite a bit for a router (I’m used to paying no more than half of that amount), but I noticed all of the features of the router and everything clicked into place. The router is more than a router; it’s actually a hub for just about everything you can imagine. There are some notable things missing, and it does have some issues, but it’s easily one of the best routers I’ve used in recent history (and I have used quite a few of different brands).

This Belkin supports a variety of protocols which I’ll go into momentarily. I want to first focus on the negatives of the device, as I think specific negatives will end up being dealbreakers for some - so I want to expose those first, and if none of them are that critical to you, then it’s just a matter of cost benefits.

The first negative is the most basic. The web interface is quite wonky, sometimes not responding to browser requests, sometimes loading a little strange (as in text all over the page), sometimes loading but looking like it’s not, etc. It’s just unpredictable and quite honestly I was ready to take it back due to its behavior. I stuck it out and figured out what it’s problem is…I’ll get to it in a later negative as it’s really a separate issue. As to the page itself, there are a lot of utilities presented, most very useful, but there are also utilities that are not present that I felt should have been..not really the page’s fault, and I’ll get to those later.

The next negative may be a nitpick. The Linksys routers allow you to not only view DHCP clients, but also boot specific ones off or even block them at a MAC address level. The Belkin can block (or allow) MAC addresses, but once a DHCP client is connected, you can’t just “delete” it from the list and kick it out. You can Deny it, but if an IP was already leased, it’s stuck until the client disconnects or the router is rebooted, which may present a security issue.

There is also what I would consider a glaring issue, and it may be fixable via firmware update (which isn’t yet available). The router functions in dual mode, local and WAN, so you can have internet and local network running concurrently. The problem is, you can’t navigate the LAN or the router’s admin page without both being active. So for example, let’s say I had no network and just wanted to use this for local network connections. You have to force the router to act as an access point - but of course, that disabled the ability to use WAN as an option until it’s changed back to the default. I hate to sound like a broken record, but the Linksys allowed you to still navigate the web page and use LAN resources regardless of the presence of a WAN connection. The real issue comes with configuration: I need to connect to the Belkin router and configure it before I can give it internet signal, else it will be unsecure. Can’t do that if the router won’t let me connect to its admin page!

Next issue is more of an annoyance. When you make changes to router settings (any router), the router generally needs to restart itself in order to make the changes effective. I’m not sure if it’s the router or if it’s Vista, but I never had this problem with the Linksys, so I make the assumption the Belkin is at fault somewhere…when you make such changes, and then restart the router, you’ll get local connectivity back but not WAN. You have to manually repair your connection to get it to pull an IP again. I’m not sure why this happens, because again, I’ve never had to do that. If I didn’t know better I’d swear the router was “taking too long” to talk to my computer. Of course, since you can’t access WAN during this time, you also can’t access the admin page to verify everything was set, nor can you access other computers on your network to see if they are working successfully. Great.

Last but certainly not least, while it’s nice that this has a USB port for connecting USB drives, I was really disappointed that a faster technology (like Firewire 800 or eSATA) was not represented. I mean this is a Gigiabit router with Wireless N yet it’s using an archaic technology for the drive sharing. I guess it’s for more widespread compatibility, but it’s still a downer.

OK! The bad stuff is behind us. Let’s get to the features and the good stuff.

As mentioned this is a Gigabit router. This applies to the Ethernet ports on the back of the device. It effectively maximizes throughput, yes…but you need to make sure that the computer is equipped with a Gigabit adapter. The standard Ethernet adapter will only max out at 100Mbps. Communications seem a lot more efficient even with standard Ethernet, but you’re still not getting the most out of the connection. You can find a Netgear or other Gigabit adapter at your local store for less than $50. Once connected the router and card know to send the maximum stream through, so you should not have to do any configuration besides plugging it in and getting drivers updated.

The router supports four Ethernet devices maximum. These can be standard Ethernet, Gigabit or a combination thereof. It also supports Wireless B, G, and N…so if you have a newer laptop that supports Wireless N but other devices that use older wireless technology, you can use all of them concurrently and should not experience too much of a problem. There have been scattered reports of the Sony PSP not playing nice with the multi-spectrum setting. I have not yet tried it on mine, but I imagine it will not work because the PSP does not support WPA2 (more on that later) which I am using. Doesn’t matter, as I can always get updates manually and load them on the PSP with my computer. So far the PSP is the only device I have not yet tested. All others have sync’d up to the Belkin with minimal incident.

Unique to this router is the dual-encryption. With WPA2 you can configure a key that is then authenticated with both AES and TKIP. This means that devices that support only one or the other under WPA2 can still use the same key, without compromising your network selecting a lesser encryption algorithm. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this feature. The Wii supports AES while the PS3 supports TKIP, etc. It’s nigh to infuriating, and I’m glad that this router has implemented this technology so that I don’t have to deal with it.

Also unique to this router is a feature that I was on the hunt for and was told would be on expensive, high end routers: Guest Wi-Fi. Got friends who come over with their laptops? Want them to have access to your internet, but don’t want them touching your local network resources? Setting up Guest Wi-Fi allows you to do it. You can even configure it like the hotels with an interstitial page that will prompt the user to enter credentials before getting access. I was very pleased that this feature was included, because on occasion I may need to give a friend access to my internet but don’t want them to have access to my files. Unfortunately, you can’t set caps on bandwidth utilization, either per guest or even globally for the guest account. I would have liked that, so that I can pre-allocate only a fraction of my total bandwidth to prevent “bandwidth hogging” when someone’s at my place. Not a big deal, just something I would like to see in future firmware.

You can also connect a USB hard drive and access its files via a shared drive in Windows underneath the router. This is a nice feature if you just need access to the files, but USB is such a slow standard in comparison to the other standards present on the router that it’s almost frustrating trying to navigate the drive’s contents. There is a noticable delay when trying to access files that isn’t there when the drive is connected to your computer directly, and you know it’s not the router, but the delay between the slowness of USB and the speed of Wireless N and/or Gigabit, so there’s nothing you can do about it. Still, it helps when you’re trying to migrate files on or off of a USB drive to one of your other workstations, or use a USB drive as a central hub for file storage.

One other feature that is on other routers, but not implemented nearly as well versus the Belkin, is the ability to reserve IPs for specific MAC addresses. This way, even if the IP is dynamically assigned, you can reserve it specifically for that device’s future use, so you don’t run into IP conflicts on your network. As mentioned, other routers let you do this as well, but not nearly as easily. On the Belkin, you simply click the “Reserve” button next to the device, and click Apply. Two clicks and you’re done, whether others have signicantly more steps to do the same function.

The router does come with a software CD which isn’t necessary, but does speed up the set up process. You caninstall without it, but be prepared to dedicate a few hours to the cause if you choose to do so. My setup, all told, took about 6 total hours from beginning to end. Compared to the roughly 45 minutes it takes to set up the Linksys router, this disappointed me, but it wasn’t the features or anything…rather, the issue with the web admin page that I mentioned earlier that caused the majority of the problem. You should probably consider just using the CD if you don’t want to be bothered with it, because if you have a somewhat complex local network, you will get frustrated…guaranteed.

Don’t let what I mentioned deter you, though. This is still a great router for the price, quite powerful and comparable to those you might find in companies. But it’s not for beginners. If you’re not sure what you’re doing, find an expert. If you do know what you’re doing, this is one of the best there is.

UPDATE: I believe I may have found an inherent defect in the security. I was able to replicate the issue twice, and I’m going to research to see if it’s a known issue.

When setting the security settings on the router, there is an option to set the encryption method and key. For the key you can tell the router to obscure the PSK as you’re typing it. Apparently, if you do this and submit the page, it clears the password and the encryption setting, allowing unsecured connections! This is an issue…a big issue. I only identified it when my laptop stopped connecting to the router and I was resetting everything to get back up and running (rebooting fixed the underlying problem), and was going to change the password anyway. Just be forewarned that this might be a glitch that they need to fix; not sure yet. I might even put up a video review about it.

I like it!5
Surprisingly, there are not many highly rated wireless routers out there to pick from. It seems like the best ones only get about 3-star reviews. I am upgrading from a Linksys wireless-g router that is a few years old, and wanted to make sure whatever “n” router I purchased it would be worth the money, and shows an improvement in functionality.

We’ll, this router delivers. I’ll try to briefly bullet the reasons why:

* Set up was very easy using the provided CD/tutorial. Took about 20 minutes total.
* After 4 days of use, no dropped signals or functionality issues at all.
* Ability to hold a flash drive (plugs right into the back of the router) that can be accessed by other computers is very convenient. Now, when I use my work laptop at home I can access or transfer files to the house laptop easily.
* LED screen on the router is easy to read and shows you what is or isn’t working.
* I am now running internet speeds significantly faster on “n” versus “g”. You’ll see a big difference with this.
* I am getting much stronger signals all over the house versus my Linksys router
* Amazon’s price of $87 makes it worth the price.

I highly recommend it to all.

Honeywell RCWL300A1006 Premium Portable Wireless Door Chime and Push Button Description:

While most homes have a pre-wired doorbell for the front entrance, for those that don’t, using this wireless door chime module by Honeywell is a great solution. Other excellent applications would be for apartments, travel trailers, back entrances, garages, dorm rooms and offices. The bell push unit communicates with the chime module via radio frequency (RF) so no wires are required. There are multiple sounds available and tunes can be programmed to individual bell pushes (if others are added) to identify which doorbell is ringing. Additionally, there are visual indicators on the chime module which helps out those that are hard of hearing. The receiver chime unit can be free standing so you can take it wherever you go in the house, or it can be wall mounted with the included hardware. The bell push module is rated for outdoor use and has a UV resistant plastic housing with a rainproof push button. It can be mounted with included screws or double-sided tape. Each push module has also been individually coded to prevent interference with other transmitters such as PIR movement detectors and telephone ring detectors. The chime module requires three AA batteries for operation, sold separately.

Customer Reviews:

Works well4
I was looking for a quality wireless doorbell system that has the range for my long ranch house that has two front doors. The Honeywell RCWL300A1006 claimed to have a 250′ operating range. It does. I just finished installing the sytem and it works well. The installation is simple. The only reason I did not give the unit 5 stars is because it has only 3 ring tones. However, one is the “Let ‘em In” Beatles sound which is cool enough. I’ve purchased cheaper models that did not work. My suggestion is spend the money and buy this system. Even better, buy it when Amazon gives you free shipping!

Convenient Second Doorbell4
I needed a secondary doorbell for my apartment. The original bell on the door was not loud enough to hear in the back bedrooms. The Honeywell wireless doorbell fits the bill. The volume control on it’s highest setting is loud enough to hear throughout the apartment. I am also very pleased with the choice of chimes available… especially the Westminster. Unfortunately, one downside of the bell is that the working range of the bell is cut in half due to the fact that my apartment door is made of metal; typical of New York apartments. This is something for apartment dwellers to take into consideration. However, if the free standing base is strategically placed, you will be able to hear the bell at a great distance. Another downside is that the sound eminates from the back of the base. Therefore, if hung on the wall the sound of the chime is greatly reduced and muffled. In any case, I am very pleased with the styling and quality of this wireless door chime.

The Modern Bell…4
Hi guys. I’m the doorbell man. I’ve bought a whole lot of wireless doorbells over the years to use with our small business’ drive-thru window. Wired doorbells have a tendency to get snatched, or demolished by cars traveling too close by, and wireless doorbells have all failed at various times for one reason or another.

Our last wireless doorbell died to a thing you wouldn’t think would happen. The button broke. Literally, the button will not “push” anymore, or activate the transmitter.

I picked up this Honeywell to replace it, even though it is a bit more than the usual budget for such things. Sure, $40 is not much, but it is about twice what I normally pay. I was in a good mood and a $20 splurge was in order.

This little unit rocks. The transmitter (the push button part), once you could get it open (which is a bit of work with a screwdriver), is operated with a large disk battery. Range is good despite this battery, and I was impressed. Just to clarify, our business is a cinder block and steel girder building, and the unit is 25 feet away from the transmitter in line of sight, but through a small drive through window. Therefore, for my use, range is not a huge issue.

The button on the transmitter is made of rubber, like the buttons on a remote control, and this has advantages and disadvantages. Rubber buttons create less mechanical friction than those made of hard plastic, and therefore, are less likely to break than my previous button which broke for this reason. The disadvantage is that rubber gives way when you press on it, making it more difficult to tell if you have depressed the switch underneath the rubber.

This basically means you can have a “visitor” who pushes the doorbell and nothing happens. That is, if they press the doorbell too lightly to depress the switch, but they have pressed on the rubber hard enough for them to think it should work. There is a little line in the center which acts as a guide to where people should press, but if you don’t see it and press far above or below the line, this also might not depress the switch. The designers noticed this flaw (I assume), and included an orange LED which lights up when the switch is pressed, and it is located at the top of the transmitter. This is helpful (but not foolproof), and practically useless if you have it oriented at eye level sideways, as I do. Still, it is good that they included this, and this should assist all but the most unassuming of visitors.

Sound wise, this is an excellent product. I personally feel that “ding-dong” is the all time reigning champion of doorbell noises, and this one really takes the cake. It sounds like a real bell, and with very good tonal quality. If you are a more complex person than I am, you might prefer the other two tones, which are more complex melodies. It does have westminster, or the grandfather clock ring, and the other one is interesting. I suppose it is possible that visitors might stop by just to hear your bell ring, but I doubt it.

This bell is marketed to look modern, technological and fancy, and therefore, it has the required lights. There is a little “smoke black” cover in the front of the receiver which is removeable with little icons which show you which tone you are playing. They can be replaced if you wish to have multiple transmitters, to show which transmitter is transmitting. The burnt orange is somewhat modern look, but unless you have multiple transmitters, this is a bit of overkill. I seldom take a look at a doorbell to “see” if it is ringing. Yet, this feature might make it an option for hearing impared folks.

Overall, this product carries with it the caveat of missed rings because of button pressing issues. While most people wont experience this problem regularly, it is worth noting, and a possibility you will have to accept with this unit.

Yet, still a good product and recommended.
