Customer Reviews:
The Goods
Garmin with NavTeq maps is the way to go. Nearly perfect routing. Reliable maps. Very solid combination generally. This particular unit is an excellent combination of features and, as a refub, a stunning value.
The features that allow this device to stand out from most other Garmins are these: (1) Instant on and instant navigation when turned back on where it was turned off. (2) Lane assist in major cities in some intersections. (3) Multiple stops (Via Points) from your starting point to your destination (many Garmins don’t do this). (4) Lifetime traffic. You have to put up with small, rather inconspicuous ads now and again, but it’s really no big deal. (5) There is no antenna to extend. It’s built into the base unit. (6) It’s really, really sensitive. Really. Sensitive. Works great. (7) There are transparent images of large buildings and structures that aid somewhat in navigation but even more, are entertaining and interesting.
You really can’t go wrong.
What does it lack? (1) Most notably, voice recognition. (2) MSN services, but that is scheduled to be shut off for lack of interest anyway.* (3) A way to turn off the navigation to carry it around listening to the MP3 player when you’re out of the car. It’s constantly finding GPS signals in the grocery store and announcing when it’s lost the signal in the store. I certainly don’t need that and certainly don’t need the battery being drained trying to GPS while I’m in Barne & Noble. It would be nice to be able to turn the GPS off while using other features, like the MP3 player and Audio Book player. (5) The FM transmitter that assists using the GPS and MP3 player with the car stereo is apparently as strong as the FCC permits, but it’s still not strong enough to overcome competing stations in the city. It’s just not a good connection. Too much noise. Some FM transmitters do better, and I’ve actually plugged my Garmin GPS’s audio output into Belkin FM transmitters that seem to do a better (but still not great) job. (6) It doesn’t have Europe on it. Just all of North America.
These really are niggling complaints. It’s a great unit. I’m loving the instant on. didn’t realize how much I’d like that until I got it.

Nice unit, but tricky bluetooth
After having used the 760/780 for a year I picked up this unit for my wife to use.
I had it on order for a 4 days and it didn’t ship even though it was in stock. Had the option to cancel that order and I reordered when it hit $189 and chose two day shipping and it shipped right away, annoying, but I digress.
The unit arrived in perfect condition except for a few fingerprints which easily wiped off, and included all accessories. I was able to register the unit on the Garmin website, and was offered a free map upgrade.
Things that differ from the 760:
- bar along the top - instead of displaying the upcoming crossroad, the 765 displays the street you are driving on. Pretty useless. I would much rather have it display the upcoming crossroad.
- Upcoming turn arrows in the top left are a nice addition.
- The 765 still displays your current speed on the lefthand tag when navigating a route. On the 760 - that vanished and was replace with something else when on a route.
- The righthand tag can be customized to display the ETA, current time, or elevation.
- Zoom in / out buttons are now both located on the righthand side, as is the shortcut button for the mp3 player. The mp3 button is quite small.
- Lifetime traffic works well and was timely on my commute home last night. Unit correctly anticipated traffic and routed me around it.
- Bluetooth does not work as well as the 760. Had great difficulty pairing with a Motorola W385. I eventually did after several tries, but will not download the contacts. I need to “connect” every time I turn on the nuvi. My old 760 had no problem and connected automatically once the phone was in range.
UPDATE - bluetooth works much better after I abandoned trying to pair through the GPS and instead just searched for devices via the phone only. My phone picked up the 765 easily, then afterwards I changed the setting on my phone to connect automatically. It now connects as painlessly as the 760 did. Phonebook downloaded as well. Voice dial does not work though.
- FM transmitter was initially very weak (as is the one on the 760) but I discovered that if you go into the service screens (Press and hold the battery icon) - you can set the transmitter to “High Power” and it works much better. It is now quite acceptable.
- Battery does not last long at all on the 765. Low battery comes on in about 20 minutes with the screen set to full brightness. You can gain run time by setting the screen dimmer.
-Screen smoothness / refresh rate and icons are much nicer than on the 760. Screen also seems easier to see in sunlight.
- The 765 acquires satellites much quicker.
- speaker is louder on the 765. I could barely hear the 760.
- 3D building view is pretty cool.
- Have not seen the junction view yet, though I have only used it for a few days.
UPDATE - Junction view worked well on my recent Thanksgiving trip. Doesn’t kick in very often though.
- Both units support multi point routing which is a major consideration if you want to force the route to be where you want. I use the Nuvis on my motorcycle and seldom want to take the most direct way but rater specify which scenic or twisty roads I want to ride to get there. Either the 760 or 765 will do that for you.
Overall the 765 is a nice improvement, though the short battery life, and lack of upcoming crossroads are the major drawbacks.
Pluses are a nicer looking screen / graphics, fast acquisition time, and better FM transmitter (once set to “High Power)
All considered, a worthwhile upgrade.
Careful When Ordering
Keep in mind this is a factory refurb, although when selecting only “New” the first item listed and sold by Amazon indicates its a new product. Once you add it to your cart it then displays that its a refurbished item; I don’t normally buy refurb’s, but figured since it was sold by Amazon I had nothing to lose…. wrong, now for the review.
It only lasted 3 days, it has now been sent back. I should have taken the advise from others who have this model. Not only is the 765T junk (read the reviews from different sites), you also have the additional variable that its a refurb; obviously it was returned for a reason right? DO NOT buy refurbished Garmin products, pay the extra and get a new model, I would also highly suggest getting a different model other than the 765.
- Battery only lasted 15 - 20 minutes
- Interface very sluggish and very slow to re-calculate
- Loses satellites
- Brightness didn’t work when plugged into power
- Kept resetting/rebooting
- Running a non-shipping firmware version. Received it with 3.80, but the latest is 3.60. Garmin suggest downgrading, bricked it.

As with all nuvis, you get Garmin reliability, the fast satellite lock of an integrated high-sensitivity receiver, a slim, pocket-sized design with a gorgeous display, an easy, intuitive interface, and detailed NAVTEQ maps for North America (United States, Canada and Puerto Rico) with more than 6 million name-searchable points of interest. The Garmin nuvi 7×5 line features three other models–check out their spec highlights at the right and click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nuvi GPS navigators.
The bright, 4.3-inch touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70 percent more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.
The nuvi 765T comes preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps from Navteq for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin’s interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.
Garmin’s patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location.
Important Product Information: This device features a “screen lock” feature. This is a standard feature on all nuvi 2×5 and 7×5 Garmin units. If you slide the “Power” key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the “Power” key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for “Pedestrian” mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.
With Lane Guidance, the nuvi alerts you to which lane you need to be in for upcoming turns. In the image above, the three middle lanes of this seven-lane highway are highlighted. |
With Junction View, you’ll get photo-realistic 3D views upcoming turns with signage–signs not needed for navigation are faded. |
Lane Guidance
With the new Lane Guidance feature built into the nuvi 7×5 series, you’ll never question which lane you should be driving in again. It provides you with a view of what lane you should be in for upcoming turns. And with the 3D Lane Assist Junction View, you’ll be able to see a photo-realistic screen that shows you both the road detail as well as the signs as you will see them on the road. The signs that aren’t needed for navigation are faded compared to the appropriate lane signage.
Integrated Traffic Receiver
Steer clear of traffic with an integrated GTM 20 FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. No subscriptions or additional hardware needed. Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information–the traffic updates are free for the life of the device.
All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you’ll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you’re forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nuvi’s sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time. Watch informational video
In most areas, the traffic broadcasts are continuous–there’s no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a “silent” FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.
Hands-Free Calling
In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. WIth Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker, you can match your nuvi to any Bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nuvi’s touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone’s call history log.
HotFix Satellite Prediciton
Garmin’s HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nuvi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.
Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you’ve found the best router, the “Route Planning” feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, “the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls.” The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we’re talking about). A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you’ve been on the map.
Where Am I? Where’s My Car?
The nuvi 7×5 series is the first to answer two common questions: “Where am I?” and “Where’s my car?” At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, all nuvi 7×5s automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount.
Navigate by Photo with Garmin Connect Photos
 |
Using Garmin’s Connect Photos Web site, you can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google’s Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nuvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.
- Choose from Panoramio’s collection of photos from around the world.

|
Other Features
The 3D Buildings feature helps you navigate by landmark. |
- The 3D Buildings feature is able to reference the buildings displayed on the map as well. Some buildings will be grey images “extruded” from the map, other buildings will be life like representations of the actual property.
- With Automatic Time Zone Transition, you’ll never have to remember to set the time as you travel. When the unit acquires a position fix, it automatically sets the unit to the correct time zone.
- MP3 player compatible with audiobook playback
- JPEG picture viewer
- FM transmitter plays voice prompts, MP3s, audio books, and more, directly through your vehicle’s stereo system

Customer Reviews:
I noticed an immediate difference, and it adds peace of mind. The house I live in was built in 1939; they didn’t have TVs back in 1939; the outlets aren’t even three prong grounded except for one the landlord had to have put in with a higher capacity circuit to accomodate that new fangled gadget–the air conditioner.
So when I picked up my new Sharp Aquos, 1080p, 42″ television I was very susceptible to the pitch that I should buy only the most expensive surge protector / line noise reducer possible, the more expensive the better–but I’m not a sucker so I didn’t buy it right there and then.
Next store, Best Buy, the salesperson recommends the HTS800 as the minimum, and he recommends more expensive ones but not with as much zeal. The difference is that the Best Buy salesperson doesn’t work for commission. The logic is of course that if you’re going to spend $1500 for a TV, you might as well spend another $100 or so to protect it from electrical surges and clean up the picture static caused by line noise in both our ancient power supply and by our cable provider.
I find this on Amazon for no less than a 40 percent discount over what I can find it for anywhere else, and order it, but before I open the package I go to the Monster website to make absolutely sure this one is adaquate–and it is. The difference between this and higher end ones is the capacity and the ability for the unit to not only shut off and sound an alarm when there’s a surge, but also turn everything back on safely.
This one will turn off everything that’s hooked into it and sound an alarm, besides cleaning up the line noise, but that’s as far as the description goes.
OK, so I open the package and hook it up. WOW. Absolutely huge difference in the picture on the set. I don’t think a more expensive one would make a great difference or that it would be worth it for me–on my level of home entertainment–to pay more for a ‘better’ one.
And then, one day soon after, I hear an alarm warning me about a dangerous surge, but it doesn’t shut down the system. Perhaps just to assure me, another day it does shut down the cable box only AND then came back on.
But the real prize is the picture. There is a huge difference between the quality of the picture on my HD television with this filtering the power and cable lines. I’m thinking of buying another one for my old TV–a Sony Trinitron–because I’m sure it must make a difference there as well.
BOTTOM LINE: If you live in a fairly new building, your electrical system is probably not as much of a hazard as mine, but might be just as noisy. And surges are always a big risk, even if you have all new appliances. For what you spend on items like televisions, stereos, and game systems, it’s worth paying a bit more to protect them from the kind of damage that insurance wont cover–wear and tear–as well as allow them to perform as intended–better than they do while on display at your local electronics store in fact.
This item will not only protect your sensitive electronics, but make them better as well. Clearer images, clearer sound, and it’s just plain smart design.
Now that I have this one, I definitely would pay for the next level up from this model but I’m also confident that this is all I need. A higher level one has more features, but for my home entertainment purposes I doubt it would really add anything. If one day I really go all out in terms of buying a full home theatre system, I’ll spend a couple of hundred dollars on the best one, but this one was made for people like me now who don’t have such high end needs but want better-than-expected performance.
Monster Cable MP HTS800 HP Surge Protector I have a 36 inch Sony Wega TV, Pioneer DVC302D DVD player, SONY VCR and a code less phone on the Monster Cable MP HTS800 HP Surge Protector. Observed a slight improvement in picture quality after installing the HTS800.
Really liked the color-coded AC outlets with matching labels. Also the extra space between power outlets so that power adapters for telephone etc can be connected easily.
I recommend this product for your home theater.
Surge Protector ? I already had a “regular” surge protector before I bought an HDTV but I live in an area with frequent electrical storms … so I thought that this device would keep me from having to unplug it every time it storms. Quoted from the instructions: Warning-Storm Precautions. In the event of a lightning storm, immediately disconnect your Monster PowerCenter from its power source. Just thought other buyers would like to know.
Amazon.com Product Description Amazon.com Product DescriptionThe fact is, analog audio equipment is sensitive to a different type of noise than video, just as video is sensitive to a different type of noise than digital, and so on. In the past, manufacturers have used filters to combat the problem of noise introduced via power sources. Unfortunately, the filters were not optimized to attenuate at the different frequencies that are unique to digital, analog audio, and video realms. Products that managed to deliver truly cleaner AC power were thousands of dollars in price, out of reach for most people. Enter Head Monster Noel Lee. An uncompromising audiophile, Lee joined forces with Richard Marsh, the world’s foremost expert on AC power, to develop affordable solutions to AC power problems. The result? Monster Clean Power.

More Than Just Surge! -Monster Clean Power The following overviews of Monster’s isolated, specially tuned Clean Power filters demonstrate the methodology behind Clean Power’s development. The higher the Clean Power stage, the more advanced the noise filtration. The more advanced the noise filtration, the higher the level of component-to-component isolation.
Isolated Clean Power Digital Filters Optimized to reduce noise generated by digital equipment digital filters isolate digital components from connected analog audio and video components for maximum rejection of interference.
Isolated Clean Power Video Filters Optimized to reduce noise generated by video equipment, video filters isolate video components from connected digital and analog audio components for maximum rejection of interference.
Isolated Clean Power Analog Audio Filters Optimized to provide maximum noise rejection for sensitive analog audio components, audio filters isolates audio components from connected digital and video components for maximum rejection of interference.
Isolated Clean Power Ultra-High Current Filter Optimized for maximum noise rejection, ultra-high current filters provide maximum current to high power components such as surround sound amplifiers.
Reference Home Theater Power Monster PowerCenters also offer the most comprehensive home theater system protection available, featuring higher joule ratings for faster acting, full capacity surge protection. Monster’s Multiple SurgeGuard and Tri-Mode Circuitry instantly detects any voltage surge or spike and immediately suppresses it before it can reach your components. And, for your total peace of mind, the latest generation of Monster Home Theatre Reference PowerCenters come with higher Connected Equipment Guarantees (CEGs).
Unlike other surge protectors, the PowerCenters’ ultra low-loss RF circuitry provides maximum protection with virtually no signal loss, especially important with the advent of HDTV. In addition, all PowerCenters display current draw and voltage.
Monster recognizes that convenience is vital, too. The PowerCenters feature component-assigned color coding with matching power cord labels for easy identification, and all are rack mountable, for easy integration into custom installed rack mount systems.
Get All The Performance You Paid For With Monster Power’s Home Theatre Reference PowerCenters, you’ll get the best possible audio and video performance from your home theater system.
From the Manufacturer Monster’s SurgeGuard protects components from harmful surges and spikes. Harmful power surges and voltage spikes can travel up the AC power line and damage connected equipment. Lightning, automatic garage doors, power tools, refrigerators and fluorescent lights all cause power surges and voltage spikes that affect phone lines and coax cables. Monster’s Surge-Guard detects harmful power surges and voltage spikes before they reach components. This HTS800 features special surge protection for coax cables used for satellite and cable TV connections. Other surge protectors Coax surge protection can result in as much as 20 to 30 dB of signal loss, which ultimately affects the output performance of coax connections. Monster’s ultra-low loss RF circuitry provides virtually no signal loss to maintain peak performance. Best of all, an audible surge alarm and visual surge indicator warn you of harmful surges and let you know you’re getting the most advanced protection available. “Polluted” AC power can degrade the performance you expect from your home theatre components. Unless you live directly behind Hoover Dam, your AC power is most likely “polluted” by appliances sharing the same power line with your home theatre components. Electrical power tools, refrigerators, air conditioners, radio transmitters, cellular phones, microwave ovens - even your neighbor’s freezer - all can generate electromagnetic interference and radio frequency noise which pollutes the AC power and degrades both audio and video performance. Plus, even your home theatre components can generate noise interference, adding more “pollution” to your AC power. As a result, you’ll hear a loss of dynamic range and resolution with a compressed soundstage and imprecise imaging. You’ll see a lack of sharpness and color detail lessening the home theatre experience. And you’ll never know how much of the essential drama is gone in the high performance picture and sound your system was originally designed to deliver. Monster’s Clean Power Circuitry filters out power pollution for more natural sound and better TV picture. Designed by world renown AC power expert Richard Marsh, Monster’s Clean Power Circuitry uses special filters to dramatically reduce electronic noise on your AC power line to give you the best possible sound and picture from your components. You’ll see a more vivid picture and hear more natural sound with increased dynamic range and less noise - especially if your AC power is severely polluted. You’ll get back the performance you never knew you lost. Monster PowerCenters make life easier. Monster’s FlatProfile plug lets you push your furniture flush against the wall. And, with color-coded outlets and cord labels, you can avoid unplugging your VCR by mistake, causing it to blink “12:00.” Finally, a generous eight-foot Monster power cord, which is the optimum length to reach most electrical outlets, is included. Maximize your system’s protection. Now you can get protection from harmful surges, voltage spikes and inconvenience! Monster’s PowerCenters offer high performance solutions for today’s technology challenges.
