Customer Reviews:

Save yourself some cranking4
I have used the hand cranked version of product and its sister product the Skip Doctor to repair a few dozen CDs and DVDs. They have worked well in most cases. I use Exact Audio Copy to make MP3s. I have had disc show up with errors in EAC and then rip perfectly after a run through the Doctor.

The Doctors use a wet sanding technique to remove a layer of plastic over the whole surface of a disk to get remove scratches. It is not a spot polisher. The Doctors will not fix very deep scratches, but they will do a good job on light scratches, even if there are hundreds of them. Some times, even if a run through the Doctor does not completely remove a visible scratch, it will help enough to fix an error. You will notice that the disk will be covered with hundreds of very light radial sanding marks. These will buff out some with the included felt pad, but not completely. I have not had these cause a disk to play any worse than it was before.

Note: These machines WILL NOT repair Nintendo Game Cube games and other small form disks. The only disk I have had totally fail repair was a Game Cube game.

Has been working fine5
I bought this to clean up all of my kids DVDs. They have a ton of discs that are dirty, scratched, etc. I have cleaned over 30 discs so far and have fixed all but one (it was *really* scratched up).

I am suprised at the negative reviews on this item since I have considered this one of my smartest buys this year.

Works well5
I bought this to try to fix some of my child’s scratched up DVDs. It works well, but you might have to run a DVD through multiple times. Example: DVD that had a place where it skipped/got stuck towards the end. First run through, the DVD was terrible. YOu couldn’t even watch any of it. I came very close to writing a terrible review. I ran it through a second time and the DVD was returned to its original condidtion without the skip being fixed at all. I ran it through a third time and the skip was almost completely fixed. Slight mess up in the audio and a few weird pixels on the screen. So, I ran it through again and I think its completely fixed.

Customer Reviews:

An excellent wireless update to the Asus O!Play HDP-R15
Only a few short months after the debut of the ASUS O!Play HDP-R1, Asus gives us the O!Play Air (HDP-R3). It adds wireless connectivity and a media card reader to an already solid media player. For users in search of a versatile wireless media device, this is a serious candidate for your entertainment dollar.

Physically, the Air is identical to its predecessor. It’s the same boxy plain-Jane black housing except with a new LED indicator (for Wi-Fi) on the front and 3 media reader slots on the left side (CompactFlash, SD, Memory Stick). Inside, it is the same Realtek chipset and software, therefore, it inherits all the strengths of the R1 as well as all its flaws. For more details on the usability issues, please read my review on the O!Play R1 page.

Instead, I’ll focus mostly on the wireless playback capability of the Air, since it is marketed principally as a wireless media player. If you don’t need wireless, by all means, save yourself some $ and go with the R1. But if like me, your router and storage devices are too far from your media player/TV and you don’t want to be running wires all over the house, then the Air is for you. An alternative is to use powerline ethernet technology, which sends network traffic through your home electrical wiring, but such adapters like the ZyXEL PLA401 200 Mbps Powerline HomePlug AV Wall-plug Adapter (Starter Kit–2 units) are an extra $80-150 to start (and you need at least 2).

Like the R1, set up was a breeze. Do you have to supply your own HDMI cable though (only a composite is included). The AC adapter is very smartly designed and is a regular 2-prong plug like a laptop adapter, not an awkward wall-wart that blocks other sockets. A side benefit of this design is that it affords you about 12 feet of extra cordage to position the Air at a convenient spot on your desk or entertainment rack. Upon plugging it in, it goes to the configuration screen where you enter the video and network settings. It took several tries to find my SSID and connect to my network initially, but once configured, it works without a hitch and connects instantly upon powering up. It’s now happily streaming hi-def content off my media servers in the basement (a DNS-321 and DNS-323 NAS (network attached storage)). The interface is still ugly, spartan, and a bit obtrusive (it’ll do a needless connection speed test for EVERY file before you can play it), but now I have all the power and flexibility of the R1 without being tethered to a router.

As reported by the unwanted speed test, I get anywhere from 11-17 Mb/s on average from my D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router running in mixed mode (g/b/n). Sometimes it’s higher, but it’s adequate for all my content which are mostly 720p MKV files ranging from 4GB to 11GB. It is able to see my Mac on the network and connect to it, but it couldn’t see any files.

Comparison to WD TV Live:
————————-

I’m pleased with the ASUS O!Play line so far, and there’s definitely a lot of room for improvement, but you are probably wondering how it stacks up against the Western Digital WD TV Live, its main rival. First, the Air gives you wireless connectivity straight out of the box. With the Live, you need to purchase a separate compatible N dongle (about $30), giving the Air an edge on price. With RMVB playback, a media reader, and an e-SATA port, the Air is a better value pound for pound, but it is twice the size of the Live and not much to look at.

The Live has the edge on overall polish, design, and user-friendliness. The interface is beautiful and very intuitive. I don’t have to drill down several layers through redundant network folders just to get to the videos directory. On the O!Play, I have to jump through a series of hoops. From the main menu I have to select: Movies -> Folder -> Network -> Workgroup -> DNS-321 (my NAS) -> [login popup dialog] -> then finally the drive volumes -> file listings. If you tell the player to save it as a shortcut, it’s still a series of hoops: Movies -> Folder -> Network -> DNS-321:/ -> drive volumes -> files. The first 3 menu layers are totally unnecessary and this is a major impedance to usability, particularly if you are trying to explain this to less tech savvy users, like my dad.

Note: It is important to use the Network browser menu option, not UPnP, which is spotty on all devices I’ve tested. UPnP just doesn’t work at all for me. Only a handful of files show up on the list. With Network, all the files are there.

The Air’s remote is big, but a bit oddly arranged. The remote on the Live is small, making it easier to lose, and skipping ahead is quite awkward. With the Air, you can set it to skip at a fixed interval (1/5/10/15/30 mins) and just push on the remote. On neither device, however, can you go to a specific time code.

The Air lets you change the encoding of external subtitle files on the fly, sparing you the hassle of re-saving files as UTF-8 that you’d have to do on the Live. If you’re dealing with non-Western characters, this is important. Subtitles are easier to read on the Live, however, because it puts an outline around text. On the O!Play, I found myself having to change the colors repeatedly when I was watching one movie because it kept blending into the scenes.

Lastly, the Live has YouTube and Pandora streaming, giving you access to web content. It can also check for update itself and install them. The Air has no access to the outside world.

Overall, I like this player a lot. The ASUS has proven itself to be a versatile and capable media player in my home, despite all its warts and rough edges. The Live and the O!Plays are the only two serious contenders in the home media player market, in my opinion, and you can’t go wrong choosing either one of them.

UPDATE: 2/15/2010 - Wow! ASUS just released a firmware update today (1.09) greatly expanding the capabilities of this player! (A corresponding update with the same features was also released for the HDP-R1). It adds internet radio, Picassa, Flickr, weather, and internet TV (but no YouTube)! I watched some educational programming from NHK about Japanese candymaking. The video is blurry, like most internet video, but this is a very exciting addition to the device! There are 100 channels on the list, from all over the world. The top ones on the list are from Asia, and further down, I saw sites from Egypt and other parts of the world. This won’t replace cable by a long shot because of the low video quality, but it’s a nice add-on for those who enjoy international programming and don’t want to pay high cable fees for additional channels. (For me to add Japanese TV, it’s an extra $25/month! That’s for ONE channel.) I am upgrading my rating to an enthusiastic 5 because of this new functionality. The interface still needs a lot of polish, but the features definitely make the ASUS R1 and R3 an excellent value for your money.

So far so good4
A friend brought the non-wireless version and I got a demo. I decided to give this wireless version a try. Here is my setup: a NAS drive, a 802.11n gigabit rounter and this unit. The unit does not come with good documentation. Unless you are a computer geek like me, setup could be very challenging. Initial connection to play video stored on the NAS drive is very choppy. After a day of investigation (more like trial and error), I isolated the problem to the NAS drive. It had too many services running (e.g. FTP, HTTP, NFS, Media stream Server (for iPOD)). After turning off all services and leaving only CIFS running, the choppiness disappear.

My major complain to this unit is its lack of documention. This networked setup is not plug’n'play. The manufacture need to build a knowledge base for the networked setup or direct customer to some common wiki page.

Good device has firmware issues4
I’m happy with my oplay wireless. It works, and over N I can steam content up to 720p, for 1080p I need to use a hard drive (1080p is major data…). The playback quality it great.

Cons
The remote is not responsive. Entering in the WPA password required hitting a key 3-4 times before the device would register. I tried using it 1 foot from the device with the same result.

The device would not mount my windows 7 shares. I had to telnet to the device (login is root no password) and mount my media via a CIFS share in the backend.

Conclusion
I would buy this device again, but someone without IT know-how might find the mounting process daunting.

    Customer Reviews:

    Top quality filter5
I bought this filter for my Canon 50mm f/1.4. The 50mm lens consistently gives me my top images so I wanted a good quality filter for it. My main goal here is protection of my lens, but at the same time I wanted something that didn’t degrade my images. I usually get lower quality filters but this time decided to splurg for the expensive one.

My first impression was that this thing actually has some weight to it. It feels like you’re actually getting something. When you pick it up, you can really notice a difference in lower quality filters (I usually bought Hoya or something from Best Buy in the past). This is well built.

Second impression is that this filter is *crystal* clear. My other filters are not as noticeably clear as this.

Now, when I have taken photos with this, I have still gotten the nice crisp clear shots I normally got with my 50mm. So it’s protecting the lens and keeping my shots clear–exactly what I want from it. You may get exactly the same with a cheaper filter, I didn’t try anything else. All I can tell you is that this filter delivered.

Also, I don’t think I saw it listed in the specs, but this is the MRC model (meaning Pro grade).

    B+W UV-Haze 1X MRC filter5
Purchased the 58mm version of this to protect the lens on a Cannon S5 IS (I am of the old school of protecting lenses). The construction is as solid as a rock and the filter element is crystal clear. I went with the B&W because of the brass outer ring. This filter will mate to an aluminum Lensmate adapter (highly recommended). Aluminum to aluminum can seize. Aluminum to plastic will bind (under certain conditions) but brass does not have that interactive problem under normal (non-maritime) conditions. Therefore, this filter can buffer between the Lensmate adapter and anything I want to screw into the female threads of this filter. Brass and B+W are a good thing (so Martha would say).

    Great Filter5
The craftsmanship is great and the performance exceeded my expectations. Don’t waste your time with the cheap filters, for great shots and clear pictures use B+W.

    Customer Reviews:

Comparing the Sony DSC-W290 to the Canon SX110IS.4
NOTE: IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT PURCHASING THIS PRODUCT, SEE WARNING BELOW!

My wife and I are planning a long vacation trip and needed a compact, but versatile, alternative to a full blown DSLR. I’ve owned this little camera for just 20 hours, but can offer some first impressions. We bought a Canon SX110IS at Christmas for our daughter. Compared to the jewel-like Sony, the Canon’s build quality seems substantially less. However, it has a 10X optical zoom compared to Sony’s 5x, but 9 mega pixel resolution compared to 12.1 on the Sony. I doubt that the image quality difference will be notable, but I will update this when I can make a valid comparison.

One of the main reasons I picked the Sony over the Canon is that it is truly compact. While the Canon is small, the Sony is flat - less than 1″ thick - and hardly shows in a pocket (although I have ordered a case). Comparatively speaking, its LCD screen is huge and bright (but does not swivel like some Canons). BTW, neither camera has a viewfinder, so I am not confident that either will be easy to see in bright sunlight.

This model does NOT employ a touch screen (which I did not value), but the controls (though small) are simple and generally intuitive once you learn Sony’s ops language (different from Canon’s). I will admit, if you happen to be a bit ham-fisted, you may not be willing to struggle with such tiny controls which are suited more to a child’s hand than an adults. Also, because they are so small, the two adjustable dials are hard to read - not so handy when your eyes start to fail as are mine.

The special features (many on this camera) all seem like they may be useful, but the “smile” feature seems a bit useless to me. The facial recognition works great - even when I pointed it at a TV image. It takes longer than I am used to to auto focus (I normally shoot with a Canon full frame 5D that uses focus motors in the lenses - hardly a fair comparison).

Also, if you plan to use this camera to record full 12.1 mega pixel images, you will have to buy plenty of Memory Stick storage, although it will shoot at much lower resolutions, it has limited internal memory. I bought two 16GB Sony brand Pro Duo sticks on eBay for $21 each to be able to do so. BTW, that is much cheaper than Amazon, say. Also, since this camera shoots HD (720P) video in MPEG4 format - one of the features I plan to exploit - you’ll want plenty of extra storage anyhow.

I’ll have to reserve my opinions on picture quality until I can do a real world test, but the images I shot indoors with the built-in flash were crisp and noiseless at 12.1 mega pixels, less so, of course as I tried lower resolutions.

And did I mention that the Sony’s “anodized” blue finish trimmed in “black chrome” is elegant and stunning?

    WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

Shortly after writing this review, I decided to double-check my “cheap” memory purchase. What I found was disturbing. It is very likely that the Pro Duo memory sticks I bought on eBay are FAKES! I’m telling you this so you won’t make the same mistake I probably did (my Memory Sticks have not yet been delivered). If you will check out this eBay link BEFORE you buy memory for your new camera (or other Sony device), you may be able to save yourself a lot of trouble (and $$$).

Like they say, “If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is”. I know better, and now, so do you. I will confirm the results after I have had a chance to try them out. Incidentally, just shot some outside images of our flowering crabapple blossoms. Pictures look great and I could see the LCD in “cloudy bright” afternoon sunlight.

    4-28-09

As promised, an update. The Memory Sticks from Hong Kong did indeed turn out to be bogus. They look exactly like Sony products, including the very detailed packaging, but they simply didn’t work. The Sandisk Ultra 4GB version I bought at Staples works great, even when recording “HD fine” video. Playback looks beautiful (considering the source) on the computer, but not nearly as sharp on an HDTV when using the composite cable that came with the camera. I now have no qualms about substituting this for my miniDV camcorder on the next trip, however.

The “smile” function actually works, but I could live without it. The camera makes it really difficult to mess up exposure. I’ve even tried fooling it with extremely harsh back lighting and it still exposed faces properly. 12.1GB images are not as sharp as I’d like when I carefully examine the detail, and there is some noise present. Keep in mind, however, that I typically shoot with a Canon full frame DSLR. I will, however, compare it to a Nikon Coolpix I used a couple of years ago. The Nikon was substantially sharper in similar situations. If the ultimate picture quality is high on your priority list, look at the comparably priced Nikons and Canons. For the features I wanted, this Sony remains the best choice for me. Finally, Sony make two affordable underwater housings for this camera. One for snorkeling and one for diving.

    Impressed4
I had just purchased the new Canon 880is, ive always owned Canon cameras,
and was not that impressed. My Canon 710 was much better. Anyways, thought I would try this new Sony 290. I am pretty impressed. The few photos I have taken, indoor and outdoor, have been really good. The colors and clarity are nice. Low light were consistently still (not blurred). The 880is blurred in the low light occasionally. The face and smile recognition works very well.
I never write reviews but after all the slamming Sony gets, as far as point and shoot cameras, I felt that this camera is as good or better than the Canon 880is and Im the first to defend Canon.

    One Camera does it all5
I bought a a DSC-W290 several weeks ago here in Europe. While European prices are consistently about 25% higher than in the US I went ahead and bought the unit. I have had three prior versions of the Cyber-shot and have found them to be sturdy, reliable and easy to use. The DSC 290 with its 12.1 MP clarity really is first rate. I have now started leaving my Cannon SLR and my Cannon Video Cam at home. I get all the still picture quality one needs plus the movie resolution is considerably higher than most competitors at any price. I was starting to look for a HD Movie cam but decided that the near HD quality of the movies produced by the DSC 290 are more than I could have imagined and instead spent a fraction of the cost of a new camera on 16G Memory Sticks to hand my movies. I like the camera so much I ordered two more on Amazon today to be shipped in the US for graduation gifts.

    From the Manufacturer

    Cyber-shot DSC-W290 Highlights

12.1-megapixel Super HAD CCD Image Sensor

With 12.1 megapixels, you can create stunning, photo-quality prints up to A3+ (13×19-inch) size, or crop your images and still come away with high-resolution shots.

Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar Lens with 5x Optical Zoom
The professional-quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 5x optical zoom lens brings distant subjects closer for great outdoor, sports, and travel photos.

    Wide-angle lens
A 28mm wide angle lens shows more of the scene you’re shooting, helping you capture more complete images when shooting indoor group portraits, expansive landscapes, or architectural scenes.

3.0-inch Clear Photo LCD display (230k pixels)
Generous 3.0-inch (230K pixels) Clear Photo LCD display features sharp, natural color that makes it easy to compose shots, read menus, and view photos, even in bright sunlight.

    BIONZ image processor
The BIONZ image processor delivers the high resolution and fast performance you expect from a Sony digital camera.

    Intelligent Auto Mode
Unlike traditional auto mode, Intelligent Auto (iAuto) thinks for you, recognizing scenes, lighting conditions, faces, and adjusts settings resulting clear images, faces with natural skin tone and less blur. Take advantage of all the technology without leaving Auto mode. Take a picture from a kid on the playground, to landscape shots, to a beautiful flower or an indoor birthday party.

    HD Movie
Capture more of your memories in high definition (720p) video. Record HD movies in 720p high definition MPEG4 format for stunning large-screen home movie playback. Record up to 29 min in 720p format (or up to 2GB) per movie.

    Intelligent Scene Recognition
Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode automatically detects eight different types of scenes conditions (Backlight, Backlight Portrait, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Twilight using a Tripod, Portrait, Landscape, and Macro) and within 1/30th of a second selects the appropriate camera settings. iSCN has 2 modes: Auto and Advanced. In Auto Mode, the camera takes a single shot using the optimal settings. In Advance Mode, the camera takes a photo with the standard automatic settings and, in difficult lighting (low light or back light) immediately takes a second photo with optimized setting so you can choose which to keep.

    Face Detection technology
Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to deliver accurate, natural skin tones with reduced red-eye. It can also give priority to children or adults. Newly added Face Motion Detection adjusts ISO sensitivity and accelerates the shutter speed when facial movement is detected, reducing blur in the subjects face.

    Priority Face Selection
Optimizing focus, exposure, and white balance for a specific face is easier now with selectable facial memory, even when the subject leaves the frame. This feature is perfect at weddings and other events the goal is always to focus on a certain person.

    Anti-blink Function
It’s frustrating to think you’ve captured that perfect shot, only to review it later and discover one of your subjects blinked just as you pressed the shutter. The Anti-blink function works to help counter blinking and squinting. When the camera is set to Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot.

    Red-eye Reductions
    Helps reduce common red-eye problems.

    Smile Shutter Technology
The popular Smile Shutter technology automatically detects and captures a smiling face. Simply activate by pressing the Smile Shutter button and the camera will capture a smile the moment it happens. You can also select subject priority (Adult or Child Priority or using the cross key buttons on the camera) and indicate the degree of Smile Detection Sensitivity to high (small smile), medium (laugh) or low (grin). Great substitute of self timer, smile once all are ready and the camera will capture the smile.

    Double Anti-blur Solution
The combination of Optical SteadyShot image stabilization and High ISO sensitivity helps compensate for shaky hands, minimizes blur, and allows flash-free shooting to preserve the mood.

    Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization uses a built-in gyro sensor to detect camera shake and automatically shifts the lens to help prevent blur without sacrificing image quality.

    High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 3200)
High ISO allows for faster shutter speed, so you can take photos indoors or in low light without the need for a flash. In addition to High Sensitivity Mode (ISO), you can select up to eight ISO settings (Auto, 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200) when shooting in Program Auto Mode to adjust sensitivity to your shooting conditions.

Dynamic Range Optimizer Standard and Plus
Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO) Standard and Plus uses a sophisticated algorithm to determine the best exposure and contrast settings for almost any shooting environment. The result is more natural images with clearer details that more closely match what your naked eye sees. DRO is particularly effective when shooting backlit portraits or any scene with a dramatic contrast between background and foreground lighting. DRO Plus allows for even greater optimization by analyzing each region of an image and performing additional image processing.

    Convenient Photo Modes
Choose from 13 convenient photo modes to quickly adjust for specific shooting conditions. Photo modes include iAuto, Easy, Program, and Scene Selection such as High Sensitivity, Landscape, Soft Snap, Twilight Portrait, Twilight, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, Underwater and Gourmet Mode. Gourmet Mode lets you capture mouth-watering culinary creations with all the color and clarity of images you see in gourmet magazines.

    9-Point Auto Focus
Because an off-centered subject can make your shot more interesting, a 9-point auto focus system measures nine precision focus points, giving you greater creative freedom to compose your images.

    Burst Mode
You can fire up to 100 shots at approximately 0.62 second intervals (at any resolution; VGA to high resolution mode. Results may vary based on settings and Memory Stick media being used).

    Function Guide
This beginner-friendly optional function helps navigate through the various functions and settings displaying the description of chosen functions or settings on the LCD screen.

    Customer Reviews:

    960 vs. 970 vs. 7805
My old tiny Casio Exilim 5 MP camera died- I loved that thing because it was so tiny and I took many more pictures because it fit in my pocket- and I had to get something for my trip to France. First bought the 970 thinking, ooh, 5x optical zoom. For someone used to ultracompact, that thing was huge and I didn’t notice much difference between the 5x and the 4x or 3x zoom. I returned it and got the 960, which I stuck with. It is much smaller than the 970 though bigger than my old camera (won’t fit in pants pocket too comfortably), but the wide-angle zoom makes a huge difference to the photos. I travelled with someone who had the 780, and we frequently traded the same shot with both cameras, and the picture quality was much better with the 960, though it is larger than the 780. The controls were easy to navigate, the viewscreen very wide/ large on the 960. The video quality is amazing. Aside from the size, the only downside was that it is a little slow to take repeat shots in action situations. However, the motion control is excellent and you can take shots while jogging without blurring. Sadly, I lost my new 960 at the airport (thankfully, I had downloaded the photos). I decided to replace it with the 780 because I’m not a photographer, thought having the very small camera would make up for the difference in picture quality. After 250 photos on the 960, and 2 days with the 780, I miss the wide-angle zoom and am considering getting another 960. It’s not that much bigger than the 780, and the picture quality difference is significant.

Great Still Images, Excellent 720P for the price5
The true market for this camera is someone who wants to have one device that is compact, shoots excellent quality pictures, and has the capability of capturing 720P HD movies.

It’s a Canon, so the image quality is a given. Tons of examples on Flickr if you simply search for “canon SD960″ or “IXUS 110″. Colors are true, not highly sharpened, low chromatic aberration, and rich with detail. Do not, however, mistake this power of the DIGIC IV processor to be perfect and free of noise at high zoom or ISO above 400. Compared to its class, however, the results are just great for the price point.

But the odds are you are looking at this camera not just for its stills ability, but the fact that it can also shoot HD movies.

So how does the HD perform. Here, the optical stabilization and optical zoom make this a far better choice than it’s nearest hybrid competitor, the Flip HD. The Flip is a fun, very easy to use device, but the lack of image stabilization in camera makes the output very choppy and prone to a “jello” wobbling effect. The Canon has a much smoother output. A strong performer in low light (but expect more noise) and a really excellent result in natural light. For samples, my best recommendation is to search Vimeo — they have the best HD streaming of uploaded videos, and looking at results on Youtube (even if “HD”) doesn’t do the camera justice.

In practice, Mac users will be happy to see that iPhoto can handle the whole offload process — stills and movies. Launch iPhoto, turn on camera and load what you’d like. The movie files are H.264, and can be quickly edited in iMovie or Final Cut.

One worthy note on shooting movie and zoom. You frame your shot and set focus with a half push of the shutter button. Press all the way to record. Once you start recording, you are set at your original zoom level and can not use the OPTICAL zoom to pull closer. Instead, the camera uses DIGITAL zoom to get closer. In practice, I found this did not produce a terribly degraded result, but it is worthy noting before you purchase the camera.

Mono mic on the camera, which pics up sound very well — even on the crowded/noisy streets of NYC.

The cheaper Canon SD780 is very nice also if you are looking to save $50. The newer jog wheel and extra zoom, however, was worth the upgrade (IMHO).

Budget for one of the 8G or 16G SDHC cards sold on Amazon for 50+ minutes of HD recording. And probably worth buying a 3rd party second battery to have on hand.

As advertised, a good point and shoot3
Got this camera a month ago just before the Coachella festival, where I shot ~4GB worth of jpgs and ~2GB of video. I used max resolution for both and did not use the fully automatic modes and other gimmicks. Being an all day festival in the desert, I had plenty of opportunity to test the camera under harsh light, shadow, twilight and artificial lighting at night.

Video wise no complains; this is not a video camera and whatever you get out of it is a plus IMHO. I got usable footage of bands at night, with reasonable sound quality, and I suspect the image stabilization improved the shots, since I don’t have very steady hands.

Still photography is another matter. I got plenty of purple fringes under sunlight and way too much noise under low light. Going beyond ISO 400 is reckless, and the lens stops down too much as you start zooming, making matters worse. 12MP is a marketing gimmick; you’ll seldom get good enough quality shots that you can enlarge where such resolution would be needed; half the pixel density and much lower noise would yield plenty more enlargement worthy pics.

Controls are limited, you can tweak exposure compensation and sensitivity and that’s about it. The flash is best for harsh sunlight situations. Having said that, this is a very compact point and shoot, with a very nice LCD and good focusing; a good camera for snap shots and 4×6 prints.

A World of Advantages with Canon’s Technology

DIGIC 4 image processor has evolved Face Detection Technology that tracks the faces of moving subjects and lets the shooter enter the frame seamlessly with the Face Detection Self-Timer.

    Canon PowerShot digital camera highlights

    DIGIC 4 Image Processor
Canon’s most advanced image processor, DIGIC 4, delivers evolved Face Detection Technology that keeps every face in every photo looking its very best. The technology finds and tracks the faces of moving subjects until you’re ready to shoot, then delivers perfect focus. In addition, exposure, flash and white balance are compensated, so that faces exhibit natural skin tones and backgrounds are properly exposed.

iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the advanced DIGIC 4 Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

A Face Detection Self-Timer automatically detects an increase in the number of faces and makes the appropriate adjustments. For instance, to include the photographer’s face in a group shot, there’s no need to rush in. Just put the camera on a stand or tripod, specify Face Detection Self-Timer, and the camera will wait for the photographer’s face to get on-camera before it takes the shot. Motion Detection tracks moving subjects in a much larger range, and the Servo AF retains focus on a moving subject after the shutter button is pressed halfway–allowing you to wait for the perfect shot without refocusing.

    Canon PowerShot digital camera highlights

    Intelligent Contrast Correction
DIGIC 4 also makes possible the i-Contrast (Intelligent Contrast Correction) system, which controls the compensation level in pixel units to brighten dark areas while leaving bright areas unchanged for better images where the main subject is dark, and more natural transition. The PowerShot SD960 IS Digital ELPH can even use i-Contrast in playback mode to adjust images that were shot without the setting activated.

Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures. 1) Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken. 2) The PowerShot SD960 IS Digital ELPH can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback. 3) You can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.

Life doesn’t give you second chances to capture special times. That’s why the PowerShot SD960 IS Digital ELPH features an ISO 1600 setting that reduces the effects of camera shake and sharpens subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility. ISO can be expanded to 3200 when you select ISO 3200 Special Scene mode.

Great Windows 7 compliant drive (and why people have given it 1 star reviews)5
This is a great high quality drive that is Windows 7 compliant.(although the instructions don’t say so) It is a compact external so it is not super fast, but it is fast enough for all my needs. Watching dvds, burning cds/dvds etc. Now onto why this Drive has gotten bad reviews.

Complaint- This drive does not come with a program to watch dvds, I had to pay extra just to do so.

Answer- This just an external drive. It will work with your current media software. The DVD industry licenses the coding to read DVDs and so it is generally not given away free with products. It does come with Nero which is a great DVD/CD Burning program. The program has a trial for DVD watching with the option to buy. There are free codecs that you can download also to accomplish this. Head on over to [...]

Complaint- The drive only opens a 1/2 inch, there is something wrong with it.

Answer- Actually this is a power saving feature and keeps it slim line. This Drive is powered completely by your computer, and is designed for netbook use. It slides open easily with your finger. When the drive is not being used, it shuts down and does not draw power.

Complaint- The drive does not open when the power is off like the description says

Answer- Actually it does. There is a small hole on the front of the drive where a paper clip can be inserted. This will pop the drive open and allow you to access your disc.

I hope this helps clear the water a bit. All in all I am much happier with the product that I thought I would be. In fact since getting it for my net book, the DVD drive on my home computer died and I have just been using this one instead.

Great Little Drive for a Notebook5
I bought this drive to use with my new Acer 13″ 3810T which doesn’t have an optical drive. I rarely use one, but I needed to have one….just in case.

The drive itself is VERY small, and I don’t see how they could make one any smaller. Aesthetically it looks great. It came with one cable, with an interesting design. It has two regular USB plugs, which BOTH connect to a single mini-usb plug. You plug in both USB plugs to your laptop, and plug the other end into your laptop, and you’re good to go.

Obviously this would pose a problem if you only have 1 usb port on a side, because the cord is not long enough to reach around. In the manual they show a picture of using an extension usb cord to reach the other side. I haven’t tried this using only one plug, because I knew ahead of time I had two side-by-side usb ports I could use. The cord itself is quite short also, so expect to have the dvd drive less than a foot away.

I used it to burn recovery disks for my Acer, but haven’t done any “speed” tests, but I didn’t buy it for that purpose.

It’s small, light, looks nice, and doesn’t need a separate power cord!

Works great with my Acer 14105
I needed an external DVD reader/writer mainly to load software onto my Acer 1410 which does not have a drive, and this Samsung drive works perfectly for me. The drive comes with Nero 8 “Essentials”, which is a basic OEM suite of utilities for use with the drive. I find it neither great nor bad. If you need any of the utilities, it does the job. The drive itself does not use external power. It uses 2 USB ports. Some people claim it also works with only 1 USB port, but I have not tried it. Installing the drive couldn’t be easier. I took it out of the box, plugged it into my system, and was up and running in probably a minute. The Nero software installed without issue. I loaded several programs from DVD onto my system without problems. I tried burning a couple of DVD’s, and they all completed successfully and faster than expected. Although I have no intention to watch movies on my my netbook, I did pop a movie into the DVD drive, and it played without issue using Windows Media Player. I’m happy with the drive and does exactly what I bought it for.

    Customer Reviews:

    Very Sturdy5
This is a well built arm. It is intended to be mounted to a wall (just find a stud) and then your smaller monitor/LCD TV mounted to it. The arms swing nicely right to left. The ’tilt’ on the monitor bracket is very stiff - a good thing if you don’t want your monitor looking at the sky or the ground after a few hours! Just remember, when hanging a monitor you still have to deal with cables and power. It comes with mounting hardware (Screws, offset sleeves, and more.). I recommend it.

Sturdy, versatile, and easy to use: a great value5
I used this Peerless PA730 Articulating Wall Mount (black) to mount a 22-inch display (Acer V223w).

It’s a great deal. I couldn’t be happier. The mount is very sturdy–I don’t doubt that it could handle a 24-inch display with ease. The joints of the articulating arm are perfectly torqued/tensioned, meaning that the display can be swivelled and swung easily with a minimum of pressure on your part, but will never move on its own. But what makes it indispensable is not only that it allows the display to be tilted as well as swivelled and swung, but also to be LEVELLED/ROLLED. This is a crucial feature, since without it, the only way to level a non-levelled display is to drill all new holes in the wall and start all over again (!). Many articulating arm mounts in this price range don’t come with this feature, but the Peerless PA370 does.

For the price, it’s an unbeatable value.

NOTE: though it is sturdy, a little sag is inevitable. Because of this, I would recommend mounting it about half an inch higher on the wall than you actually want the display to be–this will compensate for the sag.

    Can’t beat for the price.4
This worked out great in our kitchen. Despite what I read in some reviews, the mount does tilt, as well as level. The only complaint I have is that it is not the most aesthetically pleasing mount I’ve ever seen. But a great value is impossible to beat in my book.

Quality product that gets the job done5
This is my second UPS from APC (I have a review posted on the ES 550VA also) and I continue to be happy with their products. I am enduring a home remodel and bought my first APC UPS (an ES 550VA) to protect against tripped breakers and electrical interference from all of the power tools running on the same breakers as my electronics. These two units have been absolutely essential in keeping my equipment safe. My ES 550VA runs my desktop PC and monitor. It has reported numerous, almost daily, power fluctuations that it has compensated for and has provided me several opportunities to go and reset a breaker while the PC ran happily off of the UPS battery. Both of the UPS were plug and play with Vista for monitoring via the PC but also come with software that adds additional functionality. For my Windows 7 laptop I downloaded the latest PowerChute Personal edition software from APC (just so I could plug into a UPS and check it’s status without it being connected to a desktop computer) and It also works great.

I use this 450VA model to keep my wireless phone, router, and video surveillance system running during short outages. The ES 450VA will run these devices for about 30 to 35 minutes on battery according to the PowerChute software and, when I unplugged the power to check it out, watching the battery drain via the same software seemed to support this. Both models have 8 plugs, 4 for battery backup and 4 for surge protection. There is also surge protection for a phone/fax/dsl line which I have my DSL line plugged into without issues. Finally, there is an on/off button and an LED that lets you know if the battery needs replacement. On a side note, you need to open the unit up and remove protective contacts on the battery prior to the first use.

I picked up one of these on “black Friday” for about the price of a surge protector and couldn’t be happier.

    Good for low end PC4
Good product, for low end PC, it gives me like 1 minute if I consume more that 250 watts on my mid end PC.

    Customer Reviews:

Will connect any two devices over HDMI and deliver the signal, error-free5
[Anyone remembers the old "I am not going to spend a lot for this muffler" commercial?]

The 3 ft. is my favorite length to connect any electronics that happen to be very close to each other.

Just in case someone may feel guilty for not paying a lot more for a premium brand, it should be stated that at this length - 3 ft., you will get as good a service from a no-brand cable as you would from a super-expensive rip-off. An HDMI 1.3 cable should be able to carry, error free, all the signal your electronic equipment may put out.

The FUD campaign attempting to attract buyers toward the more expensive brands makes a series of claims. I will address them, as they may apply to this specific cable.

    - Signal attenuation is less over a more expensive cable. - TRUE, BUT that’s irrelevant on a 3 ft. length. The HDMI consortium stated that even the cables that were not ‘certified’ as ‘Category 2′ or ‘High-Speed’ will meet the requirements at lengths of 6 ft. or less. At 3 ft., it would be a waste to consider an ‘expensive’ alternative. In addition, the newer devices have sufficient processing power and are sensitive enough to properly interpret even the more ambiguous ‘digits’ they receive.

    - The expensive cables are better engineered and their contacts are less likely to break. - TRUE, BUT how many times is one going to plug an HDMI cable in and out of an HDMI socket over the cable’s lifetime? 5 times? 10 times? The ‘better engineered’ claim has no practical importance. If your cable works on ‘day one’ the odds are that it will be left in the back of your box for many month or years before it is unplugged and plugged back in. If this cable is purchased for home use, the ‘better engineered’ claim should not be of a major concern.

    - The more expensive cables are ‘future proof’. - NOT TRUE. Claims are made that, if you buy the more expensive wires you won’t have to buy new ones when ‘new standards’ emerge because the more expensive wire will support them. This is untrue on 2 different levels. First, your cheap cable was purchased to work with some very specific devices which need HDMI 1.3 and will never support the ‘new standard’. The new standards will be supported by new electronic devices but, for as long as you keep the existing ones, you will still need this cable to connect them. Second, the emerging HDMI 1.4 specs call for physically different connectors so, no matter how large a bandwidth the existing expensive cables may support, it won’t matter because you still won’t able to plug them into an HDMI 1.4 port so… there go your $5 or… there go your $200, depending on your having purchased a ‘cheap’ or a ‘top of the line’ HDMI cable.

    ________________________________________

My personal experience: I’ve never paid ‘a lot’ for an HDMI cable because it makes no sense to pay more. I took home one of the ‘expensive’ ones once because the salesman promised to take it back if I wasn’t amazed by the difference. It made zero difference and I returned it.

Perfectly good HDMI cable - cheap5
What is there to say? It’s cheap to buy, appears to be of as good construction as any HDMI cable I’ve ever seen, and it works beautifully. End of story.

Excellent HDMI cable for reasonable price5
In case the other reviews haven’t convinced you already: The local retailers, including Walmart, want $25 for a 6-foot HDMI cable simply so they can rip you off. This $4 cable works great. There’s nothing “cheap” about it, it’ll last longer than your TV.

I ordered what I thought were two different HDMI cables from this same supplier, but both were exactly the same — despite one being 50 cents more than the other. No matter, both are great, both are MUCH cheaper than the ripoffs in the local stores.

BTW: If you are connecting a Blu-ray player or an unconverting DVD player to a 1080p HDTV, you *will* need one of these cables. If you connect your equipment with regular patch cords — which is what actually came with my Blu-ray player — the components will automatically shift to a low-resolution mode. It’s not a matter of quality of signal; you will simply be unable to convince the components to work in 1080p at all.

Does it for me, great if you can adjust bad photos yourself.5
First I need to say the reason I bought this scanner was so that I can scan film shot on an odd format 35mm narrow frame camera so I just needed a scanner that could scan negatives that I could do my post work on later if I needed to. This scanner does that with the brutal honesty that I needed so that I can fix my errors in post and also learn from them. If you took a crappy picture with your camera this thing will render a crappy scan. If your scan is dark or light blame your camera work not the scanner. I ran a roll of mostly overexposed photos through this scanner and the correctly exposed photos looked great, the overexposed photos, not so much. A little post magic with Gimp (free photo processing software, very hands on) and I have a great set of pictures and know what I did wrong. I had a local one hour place process and scan this same roll for me, and all the photos they did looked great, thy admitted that they “enhanced” them. This scanner shows you what you actually shot so you can correct it next time.

So how easy is it to use? From the time I stuck my knife into the tape on the packing box to the time I scanned my first frame only reading the instructions to around page three was about 6 minuets. It took me about 20 min to scan an entire uncut roll of film and get it onto my computer. The unit shows a live view of what you are about to scan so it is easy to position your film, the carrier centers it top to bottom, you have to do left to right. I still have not read the instructions beyond page three, and with a little adjusting on some of my photos they look great, next time I will expose a little better and maybe get rid of a lot of post work, tat was an hour that taught me the value of a light meter.

Some things to note. What is not in the box. There is no SD card, and no TV connecting cable but for $109 who cares I have SD cards, and the built in screen is good enough for the scanning work. The unit is compact, it is smaller than 4 VHS tapes. The film holder does a nice job holding the film. I didn’t use the slide holder so I don’t know. Like it says, you do not need to hook this to a computer so if you have power you can scan any place you want to like on a table with room to put things and not at a computer desk with little or no room.

Overall unless it dies some time soon I’m really happy with it.

    Good for the money4
Received this today and within 20 min. was scanning slides. After scanning to SD card 10 slides, took card to printer. The prints were quite good. Since I have 2000+ slides to scan did not want to use the Epson flat scanner to do this–takes way too long to scan slides. Some slides date back to my Grandma taking pictures in 1948. If the slide is on the dark side it will come out a little darker than origional but is still okay.
Highly recommend this for the amature person who is not looking for perfection. I am happy with the results. At least you can now send digitized photos from the long past to your friends and relatives by e mail.

    highly recommended5
After using this little device for all of 5 seconds, I decided I needed to write a review. I agree with the other reviewers as of this date. This is very simple to set up and use, and the negative scanning goes rather quickly. Much more quickly than scanning them with my flat bed scanner (which I do love!).

Overall really good quality - well worth the $100 spent! All of the photos I scanned turned out wonderfully - full of color, exactly like the photo sitting next to the computer. I even ended up with a few more pictures since some of the negatives were cut, and now I have access to those photos! Some of the photos my parents scanned ended up with a bluish tint. I’m not sure if that was simply the lighting in the shot itself. If you have knowledge of Photoshop you can tweak your photos after the scan.

If you are thinking about buying this scanner, one hundred dollars is an inexpensive way to save such precious memories. My parents were able to scan so many photos. I cried as I looked through all of them, especially the photos of people we have lost along the way. Negatives aren’t going to last forever, and neither are photos. Going digital to preserve your memories is something I highly recommend, and I highly recommend using this scanner to do so.
