Customer Reviews:

Less than ideal “one lens” solution3
The overall size and weight of the Olympus D-510 2 lens kit (14-42 and 45-150) offered a small, light kit that is very versatile. My only issue is I find myself in a lot of situations where a rapid lens change is required with this combination so I was looking for something in a single lens that offered a larger zoom range.

This lens offers the zoom range I was looking for, but its almost the size and weight of the two kit lenses put together and is slower than either. I did not have any color or clarity problems attributable to the optics in this lens and in theory its a step up from the kit lenses.

Unfortunately, largest aperture falls off to f6.3 rapidly and that makes for a slow lens over the majority of its zoom range, which also causes a dimmer viewfinder image, and slower auto focus.

Its not quite disappointing enough to return, but in general you are better off with the kit lenses from a size/weight/quality standpoint. If you REALLY need the zoom range in a single lens, this is worth considering, but the compromises that come with this lens are greater than I’ve seen in other third party lenses with a similar zoom range (admittedly for other lens mounts).

I think I’ll look towards the 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 Olympus lens next.

The E-510 finally makes this lens a keeper3
I had previously owned one of these lenses and as I noted in an earlier review no one could have wanted this lens to be the great single lens “travel lens” more than I did, but alas the lens just came with too many shortcomings to work well with my E-500. Enter the E-510 with built in image stabilization and much better high-ISO performance and in my opinion a new day has dawned for this lens.

This is not a fast lens and that will never change but finally this is no longer a deal breaker. The lens has been performing very well indeed on my E-510 as long as I keep the design limitations of the lens in mind.

Points to consider:

- This lens is not super sharp wide open (maximum aperture) the way a Zuiko 12-60mm or 50-200mm lens would be - it’s “acceptable” for some but not for my needs.
- Stopped down about two notches or simply set to f/8 or f/11 this lens is very sharp indeed - it sharpens up nicely - however the depth of field at shorter focal lengths might be too generous for some shooters needs.
- The lens is not weather sealed and is not made to the same quality as the mid-grade or top pro-grade Zuiko lenses. It’s built to pretty much the same standards as a kit lens, which is to say just fine (it has a metal base).
- It focuses much closer than the Zuiko 50-200mm lens and makes a very good general purpose walkabout lens for use in strong lighting.
- The lens uses 62mm threads at the front and as a result several lens attachments from the old Olympus E-10/20 DSLRs will fit.

If you’re using an older E series Olympus camera I can’t recommend the lens without reservation, but for those shooting with the new image stabilized Olympus DSLRs I think that this lens can work very well as a travel lens or a general walkabout lens high on the convenience factor.

All Purpose Lens and it Rocks… whatever the situation!5
Finally! It’s here! The all purpose lens us Olympus E Series fans have been waiting for. And it is wonderful. Pictures are sharp edge to edge, indoor and out. Shots taken both Auto Focus and Manual have turned out well. I have no complaints. For an all purpose lens, it works well in a variety of light conditions, an area of concern when I bought the lens. Now I feel set. I can keep this one on the camera and I’m prepared for all those impromptu shoots you end up on. I’ll still use my other lenses, but only when I know the specifics of the shoot ahead of time. But now if I just want to grab the camera, sans the 10 lb. bag, and go shoot pictures of my kid at the zoo, I can. And like you, I love that freedom. Bottom line, I couldn’t be happier and if you are looking for an all purpose zoom lens for your E-300, E-500, E-1 (and soon to come E-3 and E-330) cameras, look no further. This is the one you want (trust me I tried the Sigma for Olympus alternative… stay clear of that one). I know it costs almost as much as your camera body, but in the end you’ll find the shots you end up with in the long term will more than make up for any buyer’s remorse you may suffer in the short term. So get off the fence, Click the Buy button, and get to work on those shots… whatever the situation.

Customer Reviews:

does paper well5
we used this lightly for about a year. THen i tried to cut cardboard. . . it stopped. And then it started after a cool off! Don’t cut cardboard with this and You’ll love it.
It does handle CD’s and credit cards, as well as cardstock. But don’t put corrugated cardboard in it.

the ‘11 sheet’ is a stretch, but it’s reliable, fast, and clean. It will handle junk mail without you opening the envelop. Cross cut is more space efficient and more secure than strip cutting. It packs down well, and when we use it like straw in the yard or garden, it stays down.

The bin is under the shredder, and to empty it you have to lift the shredder. It’s a bit heavy. This is generally cleaner than a removable bin below, but paper shreds do fly around a bit. On the other hand, the shredder always fits right back into the top of the bin, so you won’t have to worry with bin placement issues. The shredder must be properly mounted to function.

It is quieter than the last one we owned. This doesn’t make it quiet -I don’t think there’s a ‘quiet’ paper shredder in the world. It may not be as good as the $200 shredders, but it’s great for the money.

Highly recommended for the price.

Love this one…5
I recently bought this from Amazon…Disposed off lot of personal/confidential/sensitive material in the span of two weeks. Very sturdy. Low down time….will shred credit cards/staples etc. without any issues. .. if you are looking for a cross cut shredder for home/home office at a reasonable price, this is the one to go with..

Very Good product4
Strong shredder.. even shreds staples. Cuts paper into little bits, but not confetti. Expected it to be taller… its just conventional size… approx. 1&1/2 ft tall. Shreds all my junk mail easily. Worth the price that I paid. Overall I would recommend this shredder.

Customer Reviews:

Every Feature You’ve Wanted in a Compact Camera5
I’m usually a digital SLR user, but I’ve been waiting for a camera like this to come out so I have something to put in my pocket. The features that really made me decide to buy this camera were:

1. AVCHD 1080i FULL QUALITY video. Check the bitrate — it’s the same as the camcorders. Better than the flip or handheld ‘HD’ bitrates
2. Wide Picture Stitching. I am astounded by the quality of these pictures. Dumbfounded. Check out the ones I’ve posted.
3. GPS Tagging. Yep- been waiting for this since iPhoto introduced the feature into its software.
4. Low-light performance. For a point-and-shoot, you’re not going to beat this. Sure, it’s no DSLR, but it’s pretty great for the price.
5. Price- a zillion features and a totally reasonable price!!!

Mac Compatibility:
I tried out the camera with iMovie, and it worked seamlessly!!! I imported 2 minutes of low-light video footage AVCHD in about 30 seconds from an SDHC Class-6 card. Also used the camera with iPhoto and Aperture, and everything worked great.

Update: I’ve had time to play around with the different settings — you can see some of my results in the customer uploaded images. The panoramas today came out great! I am still awed by this feature (amazon’s tiny photos don’t do it justice). Shooting inside in the MOMA was excellent. Outside, I tried the HDR mode, with limited success (still need to experiment, but see what I got). The handheld twilight mode does what it is supposed to, impressively.

Nice5
I’m comparing this camera to my most recent camera: Canon SD1000 and Sony TX1. I’m just a casual photographer. The most surprising thing about this camera is the weight. If you’ve owned some high end Sony or Canon PowerShot cameras then holding this camera doesn’t “feel” normal, it’s way too light for it’s size…but that’s a good thing….sort of. They achieve this weight reduction by using plastic for many of the body parts (the SD1000 and TX1 are mostly, if not all metal). The back is definitely plastic, I’m not quite sure about the front. The mode dial (although very welcome) feels cheap.

That’s about it for the bad news. The good news is the GPS locks FAST out of the box and the picture quality is very good, on par with 10-12 mega-pixel cameras. The Sony “extra” features such as panorama and 1080 HD video work as advertised and add value to the Sony versus the only current competitor (with GPS and a mega-zoom) the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 which has not been released yet. You can compare images between the two cameras on the Imaging Resource site as well as some others.

I’m was going to purchase both this camera and the Panasonic to see which one I liked better, however I’m going to be keeping the Sony. I’m very happy with the ease of use, picture quality and the Sony extra features (such as panorama).

For a case, I’m using the Case Logic TBC302. It fits the camera perfectly with barely enough room in the front pocket to hold a spare battery. The Case Logic TBC303 is much larger but not too useful, for example you can’t put the battery charger with the camera. It could hold some credit cards or papers, though.

Update: Software
I usually never install the included software because it’s so bloated or just not very good to use. However, the Sony PMB (which is on a CDROM or on the internal camera memory when plugged into your computer) is VERY good. Good in that it’s not bloated and it just works. You can do everything you expect such as organize and edit your photos or even update/assign GPS data. Also you can download updated GPS data (which helps the camera lock to GPS faster). I would dare say the software is nicer than Picasa or iPhoto due to the speed and built in GPS features. Some other things you can do but I have not tried yet: you can burn a video DVD (either a normal DVD or a AVCHD DVD with 1080i quality, but you need a PS3 or compatible player to watch those).

Update: GPS
I’m happy to report the GPS function works very well. I took a drive while snapping pictures as a test and then examined the recorded locations. The location was being actively updated because it was able to differentiate my position between shots taken seconds apart going about 40 MPH. Very pleased.

Update: Picture Quality
On closer inspection, the picture quality is a bit soft..I wish I could have the camera automatically adjust the sharpening inside the camera (make it more sharp) but this is not a big deal as the PMB software has easy edit controls. You can also manually unsharp after you take the photograph. The low light performance is remarkable, especially the low-light modes that actively combine multiple images (hand-held twilight and back-light HDR modes do this). As long as you’re steady and you’re not shooting a moving subject you can get some pretty remarkable, low-noise images at night.

Other final comment: when you turn the camera off, there is a slight delay (fraction of a second) before the lens retracts. Not really an issue but just something I’m not used to with my previous cameras and something I just noticed as I’m usually taking quick impromptu photos, on..photo…off. The interface, although totally functional, is not as “refined” as on my Sony TX1 (with touch screen), the LCD resolution is noticeably lower but, again, totally functional.

The mode dial is still bugging me, I feel it’s the first thing on this camera that will go…But only time will tell.

Awesome features! Excellent results!5
This has loads of useful features and takes good looking photos.
GPS + compass lets you see where you were and what direction you were pointing when taking photos. Works with the supplied photo browser software and others like Picasa 3. Only problem with GPS is that after you power on the camera some of you photos will be tagged with the previous location while the GPS tries to update the location. GPS can be as quick as 15 seconds, but depends on cloud coverage, the number of surrounding buildings, etc.

Some of the other features I’ve found useful after only a few days.
HDR mode - combines 2 back-to-back images and merges them giving you more dynamic range in the photo.
Anti blur mode - merges 6 shots into 1 to help eliminate motion blur.
Panorama stitch - great for cityscape/scenery. (Only works on the wide angle lens, no zooming allowed)
25mm lens - great for indoor shots with lots of people.
Face detection - easy to focus on people, smile detector makes capturing good shots automatic and helps when trying to take self portraits.
1080i AVCHD capture. (Yes, you can zoom while taking video)
SDHC/SD/Memory stick compatible, takes either of those memory cards.(Finally Sony!!)

As far as the camera body goes, it is pocket-able. The lens does stick out a bit, too bad they couldn’t have made it flush with the body.
Stereo microphone, unfortunately the placement of the microphone may be problematic if you hold the camera with 2 hands, holding with one hand is no problem.
Flash is tiny, and I’ve covered it up a few times.

For next generation of this product, I would hope they improve the GPS feature, make it quicker, give more feedback about the last GPS position that was locked and how old the location data is. Also the screen is hard to see at an angle, so trying to take shots above you head is difficult.

I don’t have many gripes so far. I’m liking this camera

Motion Detection
Motion Detection, along with Face Motion Detection adjusts ISO sensitivity and increases the shutter speed when movement is detected, reducing blur in moving subjects and faces.

When the camera is set to Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting or blinking. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot.

impressie sound5
I bought this product but am not using it for any kind of video display so I can’t speak to it for that. I’m using it as a sound system for my ipod and computer and it hasn’t let me down. The sound really packs a punch and is really nice if you use the right equalizer to get the proper balance in sound. The only drawback is that it doesn’t put out any sound when using these functions through the center speaker so really its just like having a 4.1 system unless you use it as a surround system for a tv. It goes pretty loud considering i haven’t really gone above 22 volume even though it goes up to 34. The balance is really good, although I tend to like a little more bass in my music, which it offers plenty of. Great system that isn’t too pricey. Would recommend to anyone who wants an easy way to get out of having to use a 2.1 system on a laptop.

Loss power after a week3
I’ve own previous Sony HTIB systems and decided to upgrade to this system to increase quality and sound. You’d think the newer the model the better the upgrades, but I didn’t see any improvements to the last model. See the reviews for the hdx275, both systems are basically identical. The only thing Sony decided to do was give this line of product an aesthetic make-over, a tried and true marketing gimmick. Anyway, I just wanted to be the first to say that after a week of use, the receiver all of a sudden loss power in the middle of normal DVD play. It’s been sitting at one of Sony’s “certified” service centers for over 3 weeks while they’re still trying to figure out what went wrong. Pretty frustrating especially after having to pay postage out of pocket to send it there! I’m rating this system 3 stars because when it was working, it produced great sound and picture for the price you pay; budget system for a budget price. My only other complaint is that the sound level needs to be set pretty high for normal volume. On my older models of the same line, the sould level never needed to be set as high for the same amount of volume.

Good Product Good Price5
I recently purchased the Sony Bravia HDX285 home theater. I was looking for quality sound and a reliable product. The sound quality is very good. My living room is smaller and the Bass is impressive. I have not played with all the features yet but the system was easy to set up and the features I have used DVD, Ipod and Surround sound for my satellite TV all work great. I research multiple home theaters before I chose this one and I am glad I pick this system. I would recommend this system to my friends.

Customer Reviews:

Cheap and it shows2
I replaced the “starter” toner cartridge in my p1006 that lasted almost a year. This cartridge is about 40% the price of a genuine HP one, and it installed without a hitch. On my PC a window popped up saying “Genuine HP cartridge installed”.

After printing a couple test pages I can already tell that this will not be a great product. This cartridge is prints MUCH lighter than the HP one I had. With that, I could set it to “Econo mode” and have perfectly fine prints (crosswords usually). With this cartridge and the same settings it was about 50% lighter than the HP, and very uneven. Even in Full 600 (middle range) mode I could see lines of white where there should be solid black… This does not bode well. I’ll see what the yield ends up being, but id guess much less than the original.

I would not buy this one again.

Compatible? Yes. As good? No.2
It was worth giving this toner a try, given the huge price difference. The cartridge slides in with no problem, so it does appear to be compatible. However, the printing is so light that I had to select the highest printing density just to get easily readable output. It’s too soon to tell whether printing at highest density will dramatically reduce the number of pages I can print from this cartridge. However, even at highest density printing, the pages are still not as crisp and readable as I’m used to. If you don’t need your printing nice and dark, this cartridge may be fine, and the price is very reasonable for draft quality. However, I wouldn’t buy this cartridge again.

RUN AWAY!!!!1
These are cheap chinese knock offs that have really poor quality toner in them. After running five or six pages through the new toner, I found that my grayscale tones were not coming through on documents at all. Thin lines do not appear either - it’s almost as if the toner grade is so low is doesn’t statically charge up enough to stick in small amounts.

I printed some map directions and folded them up in my pocket. When I unfolded the paper, the toner was flaking off in several places! I have never had this happen in any toner cartridges I have ever owned.

These cartridges are only good if you need to look at the printed word for ten minutes of less than throw the paper away.

I guess you really do get what you pay for - I wish I had paid more for something else.

Customer Reviews:

Identical to higher priced ripoffs by Monster and the like5
As stated in other reviews, bits are bits. If they get from one system component to another, you’re doing just as well with a $5 cable as a $60 one. Monster and other companies are ripping consumers off with gobbledeygook buzzwords designed to obscure the mind and open the pocketbook.

I have installed this cable in my system, and its performance delivering 5.1 channel audio and DTS from my PS3 to my receiver is flawless. It performs identically to the other more expensive optical cable I have.

As of my last check of this product page, $1.31 as a list price and $2.98 for shipping makes for a total of $4.29. This is an outrageously good deal, beating even many other discount outlets. If you have a receiver that uses optical digital for audio input (as opposed to HDMI, which most newer receivers utilize), you simply can’t go wrong. A definite must-buy at this price.

Why pay more?5
I recieved one of these toslink optical cables so I could connect my xbox advanced A/V adapter to my digital suround sound receiver. It worked just fine. In my opinion it doesn’t make sense to get esoteric about optical cables for home Audio/Video applications. Save yourself the money.

Remember — bits are bits!5
Either a cable is going to carry the bits from one end to the other, or it isn’t. Optical doesn’t need fancy stuff like gold plated contacts (yes, there are vendors who make optical cables with gold-plated contacts!). This inexpensive cable works great, and is going to sound every bit as good as a TOSLINK cable that costs 10x as much.

Customer Reviews:

Excellent mouse, but also consider the VX Nano5
This is a great mouse. One of the best ones I have ever used. Some of the features I really like:
- The (newer) nano receiver, which can stay on the laptop at all times.
- The wireless just works. No pairing issues, no long initial wait when turning on.
- The “anywhere” part which is true! This mouse works on absolutely anything.
- All the buttons you need on a small mouse
- The great dual-mode scroll wheel for step-by-step scrolling or fast flowing scrolling.
- Good ergonomic despite the small size.
- Easy on/off switch at the bottom, which doubles as a protection flap for the sensor.
- Nice pouch.

All of this said, I am instead using a Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks (Black).
I don’t think one is clearly better than the other. Choosing one vs. the other is a question of personal preference and priorities.

Here are the main differences:
- The VX Nano is quite a bit lighter (by 30-40%) and it makes a noticeable difference. The Anywhere MX is a bit heavier to begin with, but more importantly, it uses AA batteries vs. AAA for the VX Nano. Note that despite the larger batteries (about 2x capacity), The SetPoint software is predicting ~100 days for the Anywhere’s AA and ~150 for the VX’ AAA, so I guess the new “dark field” laser uses 2-3x more power. I thought of using AA-AAA adapters to keep the weight difference down, but that would drop the battery life to <2 months. For me, that was the biggest deciding factor with the next bullet. UPDATE: I have since discovered that the Anywhere MX can work with a single AA battery, which IMHO keeps the weight more reasonable.
- The VX Nano is quite a bit cheaper. Now that it’s not the “best” Logitech laptop mouse, its price has dropped quite a bit. While the Anywhere MX price is pegged close to MSRP, the VX Nano’s price is oscillating up to 40% cheaper than the Anywhere MX. That’s a big difference.
- The Anywhere MX can be used on any surface. In comparison, the VX Nano can only be used on most surfaces. It’s still extremely competent and works on fabric, many shiny surfaces… anything you’ll normally find in a home or an office, and is much better than old red LED-based mice. It does not, however, work on transparent surfaces. If that’s important, then the Anywhere MX is the only option.
- The VX Nano has the back/forward buttons on the top vs the Anywhere MX on the side for the more traditional thumb access. Advantage Anywhere MX here. Those top buttons on the VX Nano are not great and I think that was one of the main complaints. I am glad Logitech listened.
- The on/off button on the Anywhere MX is easier to use (flap to slide vs. hold for 3 seconds).
- Both mice get a pouch. The VX Nano has a mesh pouch that’s a bit baggy. The Anywhere MX has a tight smooth pouch. It’s a near tie.
- The VX Nano comes with a USB extension with holder to use with a desktop. The Anywhere MX doesn’t. Not a big deal IMHO.
- The Anywhere MX has the new Nano receiver that can support several devices. The VX Nano has the “old” one. They are the same size though and behave identically with a single device. In particular, there is no pairing and initial latency issues as seen on Bluetooth devices.

Another great mouse from Logitech5
It is great mouse, and I can definitely recommend it if you are looking for new laptop mouse. Here are some more details:
1. Appearance: It is very similar to VX Nano, but has better rubber and color coating.

2. Size: It is a bit larger than VX Nano. (I assume the new laser technology, Dark-Field might be required more space. Another obvious reason is two AA batteries are used rather than AAA batteries which are used in VX Nano. Anyway, this mouse is still small enough to easily carry around.)

3. Left & Right buttons: They are a bit heavier touch than VX Nano. I don’t like heavy touch on left & right buttons because it makes my fingers get tired faster. It is my preference, so other people could like a bit heavier touch.

4. Back & Forward buttons: They are a little difficult to click with my thumb (I believe my hand is typical size). They should be located same as VX Nano.

5. Hyper-fast scrolling: I always love this scrolling mechanism since it was introduced, and it is one key reason I prefer Logitech mouse. But, there is one problem that its rubber band around the hyper-fast scrolling can be loosed in some time. After the rubber band is loosed, it makes erratic resistance while it is spinning. I guess it may not be a problem to someone, but to me, it is serious problem because I use it all the time. I think Logitech should do something about the rubber band.

6. Dark-Field Laser tracking: I don’t know how much it is more accurate and precise than typical laser tracking, but I can be sure that it can be used almost any surfaces including glass & laminated surface which typical laser or optical mouse wouldn’t work. It is truly amazing. You will love this.

7. Carrying Case: It is come with carrying case which seems to look better, but its size is smaller than the carrying case of VX nano. So, it has very tight fit which makes a bit difficult to be zipped. I have switched its carrying case with VX nano carrying case.

8. Battery life: at this point, I cannot say much about it, but assume Anywhere MX consumes a little bit more battery since it uses AA rather than AAA. Plus, the dark-field laser tracking mechanism might be required more power than typical laser tracking.

Last thing is “SetPoint” program which is its driver from Logitech. It gives some options to customize each button, but limitation. I might suggest “uberOptions”([...]) which allows customizing each button any way you want, but use it at own your risk.

Great mouse but has a few flaws for its price3
Pros:
- Nano transceiver
- Darkfield tracking
- Forward/back buttons on side
- Carrying case included
- Hyper scroll wheel

Cons:
- Price
- Ergonomics (or lack thereof)
- Hyper scroll wheel (see full review)
- Storage location for nano transceiver

Full Review:
I’m a very picky keyboard/mouse person first off so a 3 rating really is probably more of a 4 but read on and judge for yourself…

Sadly, when I went looking for a mouse for my refreshed company laptop, I could not find something I was comfortable holding on to and had an appropriate set of features: nano transceiver or Bluetooth, small size, forward/backward side buttons, etc. I saw in the store the Anywhere MX and despite the price of $79.99 plus discounts I thought I would give it a try.

From an external point of view it had everything I was hoping for. I opened the box and knew what to expect. The setup was non-existent; everything was plug and play. The size was still a bit larger than I was expecting but it was still compact and usable. Amazingly, thanks to the hyped Darkfield technology, the mouse tracked on my desk and just about anywhere else I put it. The hyper-scroll, which I’ve used for some time on my G9 on my desktop, made scrolling through pages of text so much easier than a standard mouse wheel. The nano transceiver was one, for the first time ever, I was comfortable putting into a laptop and leaving there.

So why the 3? Well, let’s start with the transceiver. Yes, it’s small and tiny and is supposed to work with many of Logitech’s products but as one reviewer said, that list is only 3 mice and 2 keyboards at the moment. It doesn’t make it worthwhile to get the mouse for the unifying part unless you’re getting one of the other items first. Moreover, the transceiver - let’s say you decide to take it out - has its storage location IN the mouse. You have to take the cover off as if you were getting at the batteries to store the transceiver. It’s a rather large annoyance for such a small thing.

Next, the hyper-scroll, while useful and one of my favorite inventions of Logitech from recent memory, has a flaw on this model in that to switch it from free-scroll to notched, you use the scroll wheel as if it were the middle mouse button. This means, for those who are quick to realize, that the middle mouse button feature is gone from this mouse…kinda. Actually, if you don’t install the SetPoint software, XP treats the application switch button below the scroll wheel as the middle mouse button so guess it really depends if you’re going to use the application switch button and the hyper-scroll wheel together or not.

Moving on, this mouse, while diminutive by design, is very uncomfortable. I knew getting it that it would be similar to another Logitech product on display there and thought that maybe the newer model would fix any design issues from previous ones. Rather, they just took the same outer shell, moved a few buttons around, and repackaged it. For someone with slightly larger hands I can’t use this mouse for very long or very seriously without my hand cramping up.

Finally, this mouse has a pretty steep price point as most of Logitech’s tech-oriented mice have in the past. I’m not saying $80 isn’t worth it but honestly this mouse should probably be half the cost considering what you’re getting.

Parting thoughts: Overall, this mouse packs a lot of features into a very small space. The size is perfect for a portable mouse but that’s put before comfort which is my biggest gripe with this product. For someone with a smaller hand size, who will be leaving the transceiver plugged in all the time, and who doesn’t need the application switch and middle mouse button, this is the perfect portable mouse assuming you have the money to spend on it. For me, I’ll be returning the mouse to the store I bought it from and getting another mouse, possibly the Performance MX, instead.

Customer Reviews:

Bose Around Ear Headphones - Good Sound But Costly With Sub-Par Build Quality - Review Other Options3

The Bose® around-ear headphone set is the base model in their line-up, but is in the middle price range of such sets from most other brands. Some would say you are paying a premium for the brand name here, and they would be right. The sound is good, though not great. This unit is cheaply constructed and has some qualities of low end headsets. Because of the questionable durability, these will definitely be good enough for personal use but may not be durable enough for true portable listening over time.

PRICING, QUALITY, PERFORMANCE

Only Bose could produce an entry level set of headphones in the $140 price range. The average sound quality means that demanding and experienced users will most likely find the sound to be mediocre. Those who are not audiophiles will find little to complain about in the sound quality without points of comparison given the brand name. And these will certainly sound better than your average entry level set. Then again, your average entry level set will cost one fifth of the price of these. So it’s still not a fair comparison.

Still, the main knock on this set is the durability and build quality which leave much to be desired. Good thing Bose has a great warrantee and reputation because there is a pretty good chance you are going to have to make use of it.

This unit is not terrible by any means. Some people may rail against this unit more than it deserves because of the high price and Bose name. That’s understandable.

But to be fair this set will meet the needs of some. Those who are super brand conscious, or are purchasing these as a gift for such a person, are highly attracted to the Bose brand. That’s how these came into my life originally. Somebody I knew just could not live with any set other than Bose.

It should be noted that I’ve performed testing over a 7 month period before posting my thoughts here. The first set I tested is still functional, but the wear and tear is obvious even after that short a time. I’ve tested 2 other sets since then and they all have similar qualities. The sound improves slightly over time, but the body of the unit suffers wear and tear easily. These are good enough for a home set but for travel or portable use I would not even consider them.

Once again, if you must have Bose paying the premium for these won’t be the worst you’ve ever done. You just have to know what you plan on using these for.

THE ALTERNATIVES

The list of sets you should consider instead of these is long and varied. Several of the sets that have to be considered are also made by Bose. That is more than a little ironic. Specifically, the “Quiet Comfort” series, such as the Bose® QuietComfort® 2 Acoustic Noise Cancelling® Headphones or Bose® QuietComfort® 3 Acoustic Noise Cancelling® Headphones have active noise cancelling features. They are about twice the cost of these but at least offer more performance for your money. After all, if you’re going to pay a premium it may be better to pay it for better quality as opposed to brand alone.

The Audio Technicas, particularly the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones, also deserve to be considered. The performance with noise cancelling enabled is very good. For less than these over-the-ear passive headphones, you get an active noise cancelling set that is more durable and with better sound. Similarly, the Sennheiser PXC 250 Active Noise Canceling Headphones, Sennheiser PXC 450 NoiseGard Active Noise-Canceling Headphones, Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones and Sony MDR-NC60 Noise Canceling Headphone all offer more features and quality in a very wide price range depending on your budget and needs. Any of these certainly stack up well against the QC2 and QC3 and would far surpass the Bose around the ear headphones. So they definitely should be considered here.

But for those who don’t want the additional noise cancelling and think the quality of these is good enough, there are countless models by Sony, Panasonic and others that should be considered. Even the very low end Sennheiser HD201 Headphones deserve to be considered for less demanding users, especially since you could buy and replace 7 sets of them for the same price as these.

PROS
+ Good gift for basic headset for those that must have Bose brand name
+ Earphone is decent quality for a basic headset
+ Comfort of design is good; pinches less than others
+ Extra long cord is convenient for home computer use
+ Sound quality is still generally *good* if not great
+ Sound leakage is bearable, allowing you to not disturb those around you as much
+ Some internal components (drivers, magnets, etc) are better quality, unlike the casing
+ Each ear canister easily swivels for comfort and versatility
+ The Bose warrantee is very good, but you will likely need it
+ The company track record of honoring the warrantee is great

CONS
- The pricing is high, mostly due to the Bose brand name rather than quality
- The headphones are made from low grade plastic and not very durable
- The hard wired cable doesn’t provide the option for some devices that require an integrated microphone (3 channel audio) such as the iPhone
- These sometimes sell for less than the list price of $140 in local stores
- The sound sensitivity and range are only average and wont satisfy audiophiles
- Durability is questionable; the wires and connectors are your basic cheap grade and won’t last heavy abuse
- The plastic head strap and can hinges are cheap and
- Fabric over the ear cushions is cheaper *pleather* type material that will wear away with time
- Many other design flaws add up to make these sub-par overall

CONCLUSION

If you or your loved ones do not have audiophile needs and simply must own the Bose name, you may be satisfied with these. If don’t mind the wired connection, this set is worth a look.

If you are willing to expand your search, you may find much higher quality alternatives at better prices. An inexpensive set for infrequent use or a noise cancelling set for more heavy travel use can easily be had for less. If you plan on using your headphones often and don’t mind spending a little more, look into the Audio Technica set or other alternatives.

For my money, the build quality is simply too low to justify this price. I will update this shortly with more detailed testing information and alternatives.

Enjoy!

Pricey, but worth it.5
As I’ve posted elsewhere, these are my favorite choice for quality listening. They don’t tire your ears out (like plugs) and they isolate you from all but the most intrusive environmental distractions. Superb bass response.

2009 update:

In 2006 I was sent a replacement for a broken model that had faulty headband design. So far’s I know, the current model has the redesigned, sturdier component.

Really good item5
These headphones are light and comfortable. Sound reproduction is outstanding. You will hear instruments and supporting vocals you did not know were on your CD or iPod. The around-the-ear design filters out all but the loudest background noise enhancing your listening enjoyment. But, you have probably heard all that. Try these out at a local Best Buy or Target. You will not be disappointed. Cost? You get what you pay for.

Customer Reviews:

Outstanding iPod dock that’s affordable & easy to use5
I have an excellent Sony component stereo system that’s 15 years old, and a few months ago the 5 CD carousel player malfunctioned, so I had to look for an alternative to playing multiple albums, and debated whether to replace the multi-CD player with a new one.

With the advent of MP3 players I just did not see any reason to buy legacy technology that wasn’t particularly cheaper, so I decided to purchase an Apple iPod Classic to act as the home jukebox, since I had already ripped all of my CD’s to MP3 format.

I began researching iPod docks and a looked at a number of them, including the Apple OEM version. Of course the Apple product was way too expensive for what I was trying to do, so I decided to try the Belkin dock.

At first I was not clear whether or not this dock would work with the Classic, however, I am very happy to say that this dock works great! It is the best way to connect the iPod to my component stereo without resorting to an FM transmitter, as I had been doing before, and it charges the iPod at the same time! The sound is excellent without any distortion… it just works! The volume is controlled from the stereo receiver and not the iPod itself, it simply ignores the volume control on the iPod… a very nice feature.

Keep in mind that the video out does not work on this dock for the Classic (works with previous generations of iPods), as this new iPod requires a special video cable that only Apple sells, so if you are looking for video output from the latest iPod’s this is not for you, but if audio is your main purpose, then I highly recommend the Belkin dock. It is easy to set up and use.

Works with iPod Touch4
I was looking for a small, simple dock so that my wife would be able to keep her new iPod Touch charged at her bedside nightstand, but Apple’s Universal Dock with USB charging block costs upwards of $80 together. What a ripoff. Get this one instead if all you want is a charging dock. (It has audio/video output features, but since it’s at her bedside, we haven’t tried those yet.) There’s no remote, but from what I read about the Apple remote on the new Universal Dock, the Apple one doesn’t work that great (which is why it gets one star). If you’re shopping for this Belkin item, make sure you get the F8Z126 model which comes with the AC adapter, and not the F8Z122 model which *does not* come with the AC adapter. I mistakenly bought the F8Z122 and now have to go buy the AC adapter. Grrrr… Another good thing about this item is that it accepts the dock adapter that came with your iPod Touch (first take out the dock adapter from the dock. There’s one that’s preinstalled in it.) so her iPod Touch fits snugly in the dock. (The F8Z122 I bought comes with several dock adapters, but not one for the iPod Touch.)

Hope this helps!

Great Product, Realistic Price!5

The Belkin Dock with USB Wall Charger for the iPod is a great product with a realistic price. The dock makes connecting the iPod with your home entertainment system a breeze. The supplied RCA-type audio and video cables are generous in length and more than adequate in quality while the dock, itself, is quite sturdy and nicely weighted to prevent unwanted movement when attaching your iPod. Equally thoughtful, is the inclusion of various docking trays to allow the dock to accept several models of iPod without the need for further purchases. But perhaps the most useful feature of all is the USB-type AC wall adapter, which provides unlimited play-time power to your iPod, and guarantees no more dead batteries right in the middle of your favorite mix. Best of all, the AC adapter lets you charge your docked iPod when not is use, without involving a computer. As a bonus, the AC adapter can be used without the dock for charging your iPod while traveling, simply use the charging cable supplied with your iPod. Overall, the Belkin Dock with USB Wall Charger for the iPod is a great product and a great value, especially when you consider that it can be purchased for less than the cost of some AC adapters alone.
