Raised by a Catholic-Italian mother, and a Russian-Jewish father, both born in the U.S., as was I, I was once the national marketing director for Arab Film Distribution, AFD, Seattle, WA, when the documentary, Umm Kulthum: A Jabber Like Egypt, was first released in the U.S. Exclusively distributed by AFD, Yahya Sinno, president of AFD, was responsible for the home division or Internet orders. I was responsibile for the institutional division of AFD, first, watching the films and documentaries in our library, then marketing them, including Umm Kulthum: A Narrate Like Egypt, to colleges and universities (and libraries) to professors who frail them as their course curriculum, for example, for gender studies or religion. (Yahya and I designed the video/DVD screen of Umm Kulthum: A Remark Like Eqypt.) It was one of dozens of outstanding independent documentaries - and films of all genres -representing the 20 Arab countries, Iran, and recently, the US, that AFD, distributed. Now, there are hundreds of titles. In fact, in 2006, I beget, the highly acclaimed documentary, IRAQ IN FRAGMENTS, garnered 3 Academy Award nominations for best documentary. Written and directed by an American filmmaker, John Langley, who arrived and began shooting in Iraq shortly after Bush declared war in 2003, where he stayed, I absorb, for 2 years filming, the producer is Yahya Sinno, president of AFD. Congratulations!

You’re probably wondering by now, what the hey - not considerable - does all that have to do with the review of Umm Kulthum: A Snort Like Egypt? Well, in a very round-a-bout design, smile, the point is that I loaned my coveted copy of Umm Kulthum: A Narrate Like Egypt, to a friend, but forgot whom… So, recently, I bought a copy while shopping on Amazon.com for something else, hence, the following review:

Well, for starters, Umm Kulthum is without a doubt one of the most wonderful, plucky, lively and astounding singers not only of the Islamic world but world at substantial! Overall, the documentary is outstanding! Taking holy verses from the Koran and putting them to fabulous Middle Eastern music, and singing it in a diagram nobody else can - many have since tried and miserably failed - Umm Kulthum is a factual inspiration, a diva, in the highest, holiest and purest sense! As an Egyptian, Muslim girl, she traveled with her father, a strict Muslim holy man who dressed her as a boy, since it was unheard of for a Muslim girl (or woman) to appear in public singing, which she did to encourage abet her family. Umm Kulthum eventually sang as a girl - and later as a woman - in public, and became the greatest and most beloved and revered singer the Arab and Muslim world has ever known! Treated as royalty by presidents, and beloved by millions and millions worldwide, millions took the streets not only in Cairo, Egypt, but in other Muslim countries as well, to mourn her passing, Umm Kulthum is an icon. This documentary chronicles her entire life, and includes jaw-dropping real footage of her concert performances of her most well-liked songs. Today, as seen in the documentary, when adults were randomly stopped on the streets of Cairo, Egypt, and asked if they’d heard of Umm Kulthum, every face immediately lit up and smiled and typically, people sequed into singing a song or humming a refrain from a common Umm Kulthum song. Even the children, when ransomly asked if they’d heard of Umm Kulthum, they, too, lit up and smiled and sequed into singing a song or humming a refrain from a well-liked song. And, today, Umm Kulthum serene lives in the hearts and minds of millions and millions who unruffled esteem her and converse her songs - men, women and children alike. Umm Kulthum is a role model not only for Muslim girls and women, but for women in general, for what she accomplished decades ago, and in a man’s world, and in a conservative Muslim (man’s) world, at that, with all due respect, is nothing short of mighty! Although virtually unknown inside the U.S, which is a shame, since I, too, like most, didn’t give grand understanding to films from the Middle East, (quite arrogant, I know), Europe and Japan, yes, the Middle East, no, that is, until I was hired by AFD and watched dozens of films by independent filmmakers from the 20 Arab countries and Iran, and discovered, worthy to my amazement, shock and instruct delight, that some of the best (filmmakers and) films I’d ever seen were stories about and from the Middle East! And, that’s coming from a filmmaker trained at - what is considered to be - the finest - American as apple pie - film school in the world, the USC School of Cinema Television! I gotta drawl ya, folks, Umm Kulthum: A Deny Like Egypt, is one spacious documentary! Do yourself a favor… Engage off your shades, launch your heart and mind, sit relieve and relax and delight in a truly noteworthy film by an incredible woman filmmaker about an fantastic woman singer whose “Assert Like Egypt” is like NO one else you’ve ever heard before. The one, and ONLY…Umm Kulthum!

in my young age i did not savor umm kulthum nor Arabic music in general, but as i grew older, the songs, words and especially the performance of umm kulthum opened my eyes to sizable works of art and Arabic music. Umm Kulthum transcended time, goverments, generation and geographical boundries. she captured the hearts and minds of people. she is a broad example for all man kind of a women who cared about her family, people and country, and presented the best to them. This documentary captures all that, and presents her life in a well rounded and balanced contrivance. I liked the fresh footage. Omer Sherif is a titanic narrator. I highly recommend this documentary for people who not only want to know about Umm Kulthum, but also about a bit of the history of egypt. I can really say i enjoyed it.

Incredible, fabulous, unforgettable. Raises numerous unanswerable questions. To what extent did Hitler’s actions stem from his rejection by the Viennese art school. Unsung heroes abound–from museum personnel to monuments men. Deservedly, the film seems to race forever in our dinky town of Santa Fe, NM. Calm no raze in survey. DON’T MISS!

As a young man Hilter was an aspiring but mediocre painter. But Hitler’s artistic ambitions were thwarted when he was not well-liked into the Academy Of Aesthetic Arts in Vienna. Many of those on the admission board were apparently Jewish and some historians blame this rejection as playing an considerable role in the development of Hitler’s rabid anti-Semitism.

This doc begins with a discussion of the Nazi’s hatred of unique art, which they considered a “degenerate” Jewish produce, and their obsession with collecting classical works of art. From there the film proceeds chronologically through the German invasions of Austria, Poland, France and Russia. In each situation the Nazis plundered astronomical works of art. Some were taken into private collections, such as the large number owned by Hermann Goering, the Nazi’s second in impart. Others were placed in storage, with Hilter’s ultimate goal being to make a massive Fuhrer Museum in his hometown of Linz, Austria.

Fortunately, massive evacuations were undertaken at the Louvre in Paris and the Hermitage in Leningard, which successfully hid numerous works of classic art from theft by the Nazis. But it wasn’t only the Germans who did the plundering. The Soviets also engaged in massive looting of German art during their raids on Berlin. Also some Italian art and architecture was destroyed by American bombing. But, to their credit, the Americans also open sending in Monuments Men who were entrusted with helping support art from further destruction and confiscating the works that had being stolen by the Germans.

The film contains a mix of wonderful archival footage with narration by Joan Allen and interviews with various art historians and others. At finish to 2 hours, it is rather long for a documentary and some may get it humdrum at times. But with it’s principal purpose education rather than entertainment, it is best appreciated by those with a strong interest in European art and Nazi atrocities. It is a very well made documentary, however, and comes highly recommeded to those with at least some interest in the subject matter.

MAD MEN is one of those series that is almost impossible to praise too highly. It is also one of those series that puts on exhibit the inherent superiority of television to the movies. That is a sentiment that I pick up offends many, but one that more and more thinking men and women are coming to embrace as television gradually turns out one amazingly shining series after another. Cinema is inherently miniature on how distinguished an individual movie can enact in developing a complex sage fair as it is cramped in how deeply it can gaze character. The reason is obvious: a lack of time. Delving deeply into the lives of a group of characters is a luxury movies simply can’t afford. The clock is ticking.

MAD MEN will, when it is finished, be a legend of the sixties. Season One begins in 1960k, shortly before the Kennedy-Nixon election. Season Two moves almost two years ahead of that. Subsequent seasons will depart the legend ahead by a couple of years each time, before coming to an demolish at the waste of the decade. The sixties was clearly the most noteworthy decade of the twentieth century. The world of 1970 has more in current with today in many ways than it did to 1960. The changes in our attitudes can scarcely be assessed. At the beginning of the series women all have their location in the office as servants to the men, pick up passively their roles as spy candy and objects of sexual innuendo, and aspire to no more than involving up the secretarial inappropriate. A jubilant man in the office is so completely in the office that he seems oblivious to his homosexuality. But by the raze of decade would arrive the Stonewall riots and the Second Wave of the women’s movement would be in bulky bloom.

One of the dominant themes of the prove is the difference between the world of today and the world of “then.” One of the most striking moments in Season One comes when Betty Draper’s daughter runs into the living room wearing a body length plastic launderer’s bag. Betty sharply upbraids her, hoping that this doesn’t mean that her laundry is laying on the floor. To new sensibility a child wearly a deadly plastic poor is hideous. Or in a behind season episode Don Draper allows his completely drunk boss to leave his house with a drink “for the road.” He merely smiles when he shouts, “That’s my car!” as Roger drunkenly tries to glean his maintain. A pregnant woman at a party can be seen smoking while holding a martini glass. One of my accepted Indignant MEN scenes comes in Season Two, when after a picnic with his wife and kids, Don shakes the blanket they have all been sitting on, leaving the paper and trash on the ground. It all highlights some of the progress we have made in discipling some of our more indefensible behavior.

As others have eminent, the note centers on several ad executives at the Sterling-Cooper advertising firm. In particular, the film focuses on Don Draper, a brilliantly creative ad exec who has been fair as inventive in recreating himself as he has been in promoting the products of the firm’s clients. A serial adulterer, the child of a prostitute who died giving birth to him, and the son of an abusive father, he has had to pull himself from his humble origins to the top of his profession. All this while protecting his believe sad secrets. Don Draper is a colossal character, perhaps the most archetypal character to have arisen since Tony Soprano. And it provided the opportunity for overnight stardom for Jon Hamm, a previously only marginally successful actor who had mainly been eminent by a string of very microscopic parts on various TV series and itsy-bitsy budget movies. But it is impossible to imagine anyone more perfect for this role than Hamm and series creator Matthew Weiner agreed after seeing his audition tapes. When the network insisted that Hamm be passed over for a more established actor, Weiner declared that without Hamm he was not willing to recede forward with the series. Weiner won and Hamm went on to bag a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination (which he should have won) . As portrayed by Hamm, Don Draper is the complete embodiment of Thoreau’s individual who lives a life of peaceful desperation. Draper is a world of contraditions. At times unscrupulous, he is also top-notch of immense magnanimity and accurate rectitude. A womanizer, he yearns for the ideal home.

The cast is stuffed with spacious characters and astounding performances. I absolutely detested Vincent Kartheiser as Connor on the series ANGEL, though even then I suspected it was more the arrangement he was written than his performance. Though he isn’t asked to effect acts of audacious do on Furious MEN, he is exceptional as Peter Campbell. Like Don Draper he alternates from petty, self-serving moments to acts of kindness and loyalty. He is estimable of being wonderfully protective of Peggy Olson, a woman with whom he has had a couple of moments of physical intimacy, though he can also behave viciously towards her. John Slattery is outstanding as Roger Gracious, the number two man in the firm and the son of the Sterling-Cooper cofounder. Robert Morse, the ample Broadway musical star of the sixties (including HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING), plays Betram Cooper, the head of the firm. The almost unbearably fair January Jones (at one point in the season distinguished is made of her resemblence to Grace Kelly, and she is beautiful enough to construct it not a comic compliment) . Not to jump ahead to Season Two, Jones performance over the two seasons as Don Draper’s trophy wife Betty is noting short of knowing. Betty is someone who detests her life as a fine manikin, but isn’t able to execute happiness because she doesn’t know who she wants to become. She also provides many of Season One’s huge moments, none better than when she starts killing the carrier pigeons of her next door neighbor with an air rifle (with cigarette dangling from her mouth) after he tells her children that he will destroy their dog if they don’t withhold him out of his yard. The pretty Christina Hendricks (who wears some padding to invent her figure more Rubenesque and who was astounding in the recurring role of Saffron on the Sci-fi series FIREFLY) plays Joan Holloway, the office manager.

After Don Draper, however, my popular character on the demonstrate is Peggy Olson (Elizabeth Moss) . The series actually begins with Peggy’s first day as a Sterling-Cooper employee. Starting off as Don Draper’s secretary, she soon shows that she has skills as a writer, and soon becomes valued as a copy writer with a sensitivity for products that appeal to women. I’ve told friends that I maintain that by the waste of the series Peggy will actually be the head of Sterling-Cooper. I judge the centrality of Peggy to the present was shown partly by the point to commencing with her first day there and with her unprecedented penetration of the all male hierarchy of the corporation. Viewers may peek that she gains weight over the course of the year, especially during the last half. In fact Elizabeth Moss gained no weight. All changes were the result of very sophisticated earn up art and padded clothing.

MAD MEN is one of the most beautifully designed shows you’ll ever hope to ogle. It may be surpassed by BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and PUSHING DAISIES in art execute, but no present on television rivals it in clothing. The peer of the note is impeccable. If you don’t remember the sixties, you can relive them by watching this reveal.

This is a exhibit that anyone serious about quality TV has to know well. I’ve watched Season One twice and belief on rewatching Season One and Two as soon as the latter has finished. Angry MEN is also an example of a modern trend in television, a series that tells more or less a unified tale over the course of its life. LOST and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA both are doing this as well. All are must-see shows.

Mad Men is one of the best shows I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

Watching this demonstrate on blu-ray has been something I will remember for quite some time. I missed the new airing of the reveal when it came on, and I was looking forward to watching the blu-ray. Once I watched it I feel in worship.

As far as a blu-ray goes, this is perfect. The video is fantastic, same with the audio, and it is stuffed with extras, including over 18 hours in audio commentary. There is another extra that is 1 hour long that is VERY righteous, and I recommend checking it out after you execute watching the series.

There was distinguished talk and debate over Gilmore Girls’ fourth season. Some concept it was ample and that it was one of their best seasons. Others idea that it had a lot of wonderful stuff, but had problems and was, quite easily, it’s weakest season. I can’t say that it’s a awful season, because it’s not. The second half contains some truly vast episodes, but season four was a disjointed disappointment. The present went through a transition this year, and shows that go through a determined ‘growing up’ phase do have some problems. They usually don’t go through it unscathed. Season four of GG is no exception. Rory leaves home and Stars Hollow and goes off to live in her dorm at Yale. This leaves a current, and awkward, dynamic between mother and daughter and the reveal. The relationship between the two was a major factor of the series, and the fact that they spoke to one another on cell phones more than anything else it seemed was also a component that didn’t add to the season. They added in the character of Jason ‘Digger’ Stiles, and most people didn’t really like him or warm up to him. This was not actor Chris Eigelman’s fault, as he was agreeable. The only actor who could match Lauren Graham’s fast impart and fleet wit. Lorelei also had fresh developments in her life. She and Sookie were getting serious about opening their possess inn, and in the meantime, catch on careers as caterers. It seemed that the writers had a hard time settling into their fresh region ups and situations, and it left the point to disjointed, misguided, and honest not the same indicate. This was mostly during the first half of the season, although there were some highlights. “Chicken Or Beef” was a classic GG episode dealing with Rory running into ex Dean, who invites her to his upcoming wedding. “The Festival Of Living Art” was another considerable episode, with the town becoming living pieces of art in the town square. But there were more misfires and duds than enormous eps. “An Affair To Remember” had Rory spending the entire episode looking for a station to peruse. This was a jam with Rory. There was this grand unusual change in her world, and the writers didn’t seem to exploit it distinguished. Rory was lost for a apt fragment of the season, and it seemed they couldn’t figure anything safe to do with her. Thankfully, once the second half kicks in, the present regains it’s footing and the writers seemed to have finally gotten a bear of what the expose wa doing this season. The second half really kicked into gear, and it’s what saved the season. This is why I gave it four stars. Jess returns, and not for the first-rate, in “A Family Matter”, and the season had one of it’s best episodes with “A Clang In The Clamor”, a classic GG episode with a unbelievable Luke/Lorelei moment in the traditional church. “Tick..Tick..Tick..Say” and “Afterboom” was a huge two parter. A proper season highlight. Lorelei and Sookie’s fresh inn, The Dragonfly, is coming into shape towards the ruin of the season, and it appears to be a huge novel status. “Luke Can Watch Her Face” is a expansive episode. It’s a pivotal ep in the L/L movement, when Luke finally realizes that Lorelei is the one. The season finale, “Raincoats And Recipes”, is the type of stuff season finales are made off. Pitch perfect. An episode that changes everything in the Gilmores’ world, and promises broad stuff to approach. And advance it did in the show’s splendid fifth season. Season four was not dreadful. It had problems and flaws, and is easily it’s ‘least’ season, but it overcame them in the second half. Ther performances were aloof up to snuff, and Lauren Graham continues to be one of the top best actresses on TV. She has “Emmy” written all over her, and continues to be denied that honor. Yes, keen out and racy away can be awkward and things are fair different. Maybe that was the writers’ point, but it was distinct that it’s hard, different, and awkward to write as well. Season 4 started off with a whimper, but it definite ended with a major bang.

Although reviewers were lickety-split to criticize season four, no one will voice that the last few episodes of the season were some of the best the reveal has ever brought forth.

Season four brings Lorelei and Rory to a recent spot in their relationship. Rory moves out of the house and into the dorms, and Lorelei struggles with the realities of bringing her life-long dream of owning an inn to fruition. Through phone conversations and Friday night dinners the girls struggle to hold their relationship as conclude as it once was. Dean reappears as a married man, Luke is as amusing and endearing as ever, and the elder Gilmores struggle to adjust to changes in their marriage. Digger and the lawyer explain comic distractions to the proper savor tale, which finally reaches its beginning in a satisfying scene outside the Dragonfly. And lets not forget about the final scene, which left everyone in shock - because when Rory messes up - she messes up spacious.

This collection is a must have for any Gilmore Girls enthusiast. Don’t listen to the naysayers. There are a lot of gems to be found throughout season four.

Perhaps the signature role in Robert Urich’s too short career. Spenser, with an ’s’ like the poet, was a tough talking Private Spy in Boston. He likes to cook, and he loves Susan Silverman. He garners succor on a regular basis from Hawk, a passe mob enforcer who respects what Spenser stands for.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Spenser For Hire - the Movie Collection! Click Here

The first two of these movies are decent enough. They hold some of the flavor of the TV expose. Although the production moved from Boston to Toronto to slice costs. Also in a cost-cutting measure, they replaced the series’ Susan (Barbara Stock) with Barbara Williams and later Wendy Crewson. (A go that Urich admitted was a unpleasant one.) ABC produced the first two movies after cancelling the series. The latter two were produced for Lifetime Television.

Robert B. Parker, who penned the novels on which the series was based, co-wrote the first two of these movies with his wife. The quality of the first two scripts notwithstanding, the productions suffered from the disappear to Toronto. While it is a lovely city, it doesn’t have the same feel as Beantown.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Spenser For Hire - the Movie Collection! Click Here

The latter two cable movies are a hollow shell of what made the indicate expansive. It’s basically a cut-and-paste job.

That having been said, I would guess that Warner Bros. is keeping a end discover on the sales of this state to resolve if they’ll release the tremendous series on DVD. So, if you want to contemplate the accurate “Spenser: For Hire” you’ll have to go through here to come by it.

They say Robert Parker grew miserable with the network interpretation of Spenser. they even say he objected to Urich in the role. But Parker probably owes a lot more book sales to Urich’s signature role as the vivid and philosophical PI in boston.

I loved this display when it aired, even though I was only 14 at the time.

Avery Brooks was exceptional as Hawk. So grand so, they spun him into a solo series that ultimately failed. It failed because whoever was in charge forgot what made Hawk so favorite - his wiseass, tough guy personality. All those Hawk-eque qualities got down played in the Hawk series. So it was nice to perceive him return to the 4 movies in the early 90s. (His Hawk was so valid, that Deep Situation 9 eventually had him Hawk-ify his Commander role on that indicate) .

The lack of a regular Susan (or the return of the unusual) hurts these movies only slightly.

And this time Parker took the reigns and adapted them from his books. Eventually, he adapted one or two more with Joe Mantagna as Spenser, but it never worked as well and the series of movies ceased. Parker has now moved on to Jesse Stone, his newest fresh character and Tom Selleck has made one TV movie that is also marvelous.

Missing also here are modern Belson actor and Lt Quark. But they play only minor roles.

Unlike a TV episode, these are fully contained stories told over a larger canvas that takes more time and a more film like tear. Also missing is Boston as the city they film in - very noticable and saddening. Spenser drives a Ford Probe rather than the classic Mustang, which is also a let down. But those are only asthetic items.

Let’s hope that fans scoop these movies on DVD up, since word is that these are tests to search for if the regular series 3 seasons are worth the time and trouble to release. Let’s display them that they are, and assume these when they advance out.

I will definitely pick it on DVD

Yes, it is proper to catch the kids to this one! The whole family enjoyed it. We had left the 14 year mature at home, but will rent it as soon as it comes out so she can recognize it too. The message is determined, the innuendos few, and the theme is unbiased dull fun. Even the “Paris” character keeps things mostly covered. Nice change for a 21st Century film.

The lead, though he starts out trying to manipulate life to go his materialistic ways, learns how to manipulate life to back all of those around him. He is honest that kind of guy who never could have been the selfish fool. So, it really can be a mountainous discussion starter for the family about morality, unselfishness, and respectable behavior in community.

On top of all that deep stuff, it is unprejudiced hilariously comic! There were even some applause at the destroy when we watched it in the theater. It has been a long time since I’ve been in a movie where the audience was moved to applause.

Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) is a witch who fell in treasure with and then married the mortal Darrin Stephens (who, for the first couple of seasons, is played by Dick York) . Darrin accepts her `heritage’ only on the condition that she now refrain from using witchcraft and `settle down’ to be a normal American middle-class housewife.

To the anxiety of her mother Endora (Agnes Moorehead), Samantha has agreed to the inquire of. But, Endora ultimately scared over nothing. Samantha herself soon discovers that giving up witchcraft was an impossible promise. Conflict between her promise and an often-more complicated reality drive this series’ storylines.

Tensions immediately flare in the first season when an frail flame of Darrin’s (Nancy Kovak) invites them to a dinner party. Because Shelia Sommers is so faulty, Samantha breaks her promise in order to avoid being shown up in front of her husband. Beginning with this episode, Darrin recognizes that he cannot control when Samantha does/does not exercise her magic, and can only perform suggestions. Whether this advice is taken then rests entirely with Samantha.

In “Be it ever so mortgaged” we meet Gladys and Abner Kravitz (Alice Pearce and George Tobias) who are the Steven’s next door neighbors. Ever the busybody, Mrs. Kravitz begins a series-long tirade about `something outlandish going on over there’. Less concerned, her husband is a largely-silent type.

“It shouldn’t happen to a dog” introduces us to Darrin’s boss Larry Tate (David White) and his wife Louise (at this point being played by Irene Vernon) . It also previews the many problems Darrin will have working at the McMahon & Tate advertising company.

“The witches are out” finds Samantha protesting the negative pop culture images of witches traditionally associated with American Halloweens. With the abet of her beloved Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne) Samantha convinces an advertising client of Darrin’s that using a exquisite witch for their candy sales would be a better strategy through changing that executive’s appearance: If he did not like being an unpleasant witch, neither did they! Aunt Clara has the distinction of being Samantha’s only female relative who genuinely appears to like Darrin

Samantha meets her in-laws, Phyllis (Mabel Albertson) and Frank Stephens (Robert F. Simon) during “Samantha meets the folks”. Aunt Clara’s unexpected return and helping out upsets Darrin who had wanted his parents to acquire that Samantha did all the housework by herself. Because she had wanted to glean some fault with this housework (regardless of who actually did it), Phyllis was honestly disappointed by how perfect everything looked. Darrin’s mother is later relieved to learn that her daughter in law is not actually a top-notch housekeeper, and Darrin then makes up with Aunt Clara.

Aunt Clara makes another ample appearance in “There’s no witch like an archaic witch”. Aunt Clara is a enormous babysitter until she accidentally tells the kids that she is a witch. Because witches supposedly do not exist, she is barred from babysitting. Although a assume (who had every reason to doubt her statement of being a witch) is instead impressed with Aunt Clara, the Stephens resolve to send her to Miami for a convenient acquire away vacation with her friends. This will provide time for people to forget what they were told in this episode.

Forty years later, these episodes contain up enormous. Some sitcoms which cannot age well obviously depend on extras in the DVD sets in order to accumulate market appeal with `today’s audience’. Bewitched is one of the rare titles which has always remained watch-able and really does not need the special features included in this release.

Even the ‘black and white’ filming of this season is not annoying. Bewitched was head and shoulders above many other sitcoms of the era to start with.

The sign for this product is really affordable considering the production quality AND all of the DVD extras. Uncommon DVD featurettes include bloopers, a feature how the ‘magic’ was performed, and a theatrical trailer for the upcoming Bewitched movie with Nicole Kidman.

I am only saddened that Montgomery and both `Darrins’ are no longer around to participate in the DVD release for this series.

Maybe I’m stuck in the past, but I don’t reflect that (most) fresh TV programs can compare to the huge writing and acting from the older shows. Bewitched is one of those shows from my childhood that collected shines brighter than anything recent on the air today. Unless you subscribe to one of those specialty TV stations that replay the oldies, this DVD plot is a must!

My fiance and I both loved this movie when it was released and we mild do. When we heard it was coming out on Blu Ray and on top of that 3-D we were beyond inflamed. Well that excitment was crushed when we got home, effect it on and were almost given instant headaches from the traditional school red and blue 3-d glasses and the fact that no matter how hard we tried to notice it, it fair was nowhere come 3-d quality. We sat there contemplating whether or not it was honest us or if the 3-d aspect of it sucked that abominable and we came to the conclusion that it was definately the latter. So after a half hour of trying hard to like it we switched it to 2-d (thank god for blu ray for having that option) and saw how in 1080p it was almost 3-d itself.

Needless to say the very next day I went encourage to the store I purchased it from and changed it for the regular blu ray version (which was $5 cheaper than the 3-d version and totally worth the prefer, 5 stars for that version.) It was very unlit that it did not work out because such an fabulous holiday movie with such gigantic animation would be a no brainer to have as 3-d but unfortunately it impartial is not worth the headache and strain.

I went to inspect this movie tonight with a mentally handicapped friend - “Michael” — (from a L’Arche home here in Winnipeg, Canada) . We were the first persons in the theatre for the very first evening showing in this city - and we were the last to leave. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves - enchanted by the movie’s subtleties and happily exhausted by its roller-coaster rides.

Time and again, Michael (who is sensitive, compassionate and with a satisfactory sense of humor) turned to me in the darkness, smiling in appreciation at the precise same moments I turned to study his reactions. Each time this happened, it was at a moment in the film when some tiny detail, perfectly captured through advantageous ‘cinematography,’ brought moisture to my normally cynical discover, and a warm smile to Michael’s innocent face.

Some examples: There is a lone, shadowy child on this apparent ‘dream train’ to the North Pole - a girl of about ten or eleven years, and like a painting near to life, the miraculous technology at work in this film captures the particular sensibilities of this compassionate, dim youngster — We discover diminutive mannerisms of someone comfortable with herself in a procedure the other (ten or so) white kids on the scream are not. And the conclude is profound — the movie audience, including some children of that same age group, went tranquil at such moments in the film.

My friend Michael - who has a ’savant’ genius for perceiving my emotions, and expressing them for me out loud in public — Michael turned to me with a elated smile when the girl on the snarl reaches out to believe the hands of the poorest boy, sitting alone in the rear compartment; and later, she hugs two other boys, (one of them the central character) — at their final parting. At that moment I held up a finger to my lips to try to hush Michael, but couldn’t prevent him from saying aloud: “She’s such a sweetheart.” There were murmurs of appreciation in the darkness around us, responding to this innocent sentiment.

There is a sublime moment, on the encourage platform of the involving stammer — the Northern Lights glimmering in the distance — when the young girl joins in song with the poorest kid on the jabber (a younger boy from a used home on the “far side of the tracks”) . I admit to being overcome with emotion during this duet (a blooming, strong melody with poignant lyrics) - and I blurted out loud to Michael, after the first chorus: “What a incredible song!” The refrain includes the words “When Christmas comes to town.” [It's a song so salubrious that, with some future 'cover versions' by serious musicians who could do it justice --- this "Christmas Comes to Town" song could, I have, deservedly join the slight list of fair, Christmas 'classics.']

I’d have to agree with anyone who thinks this movie is a cramped short on spot. And yet . . . once you’ve suspended disbelief — beginning with an earth-shattering, Christmas-eve arrival of a steam-puffing, passenger exclaim on a small-town Michigan street, directly outside the home of the movie’s central character — once we’ve swallowed that premise, the movie disarmingly embraces the child in us, (including our fears) and our reservations vanish without our noticing.

Just as grand `realistic’ painters, (assume Rembrandt or Vermeer) worked wonders of light & shadow that no mere photograph could ever seize, so too this computer-animated marvel takes your breath away through an accumulation of shrimp but acute observations that could never be captured by customary cinematography. Prime examples from the opening scenes:

A shaft of light illuminates the boy’s bedroom, and he is reflected in a chrome, automobile hubcap leaning against a wall; at once we fragment his understanding — through the keyhole of his bedroom door - we can glimpse only the backs and the dressing gowns of mother and father, as they say goodnight to the boy’s young sister, after determining the residence of her plan in Santa’s existence - a notion no longer shared by the older brother, whose sight is at the keyhole.

Later, on the exclaim, there’s an dazzling halt up of the boy’s face, a diminutive blemish above the pores on his upper true cheek; the `camera’ pans in rotation, capturing perfectly, the texture of the boy’s hair, and that of the young dim girl sitting beside him — subtleties of such perfection one wonders if the recent, artistic accomplishment of “Polar Speak” could ever be surpassed.

The film’s last scene, consists entirely of a close-up conception of a little, silver bell (of the type associated with sleigh rides) with its attached ‘ribbon’ of red leather. The itsy-bitsy bell helps perform the final point about `Belief’ — in things unseen, (or forgotten, and thus inaccessible to some adults) . So simple, so grand, so enlightening an image. My friend Michael turned to me at that moment, with a heavenly smile. And we unbiased shook our heads in fright.

—-

Yes, this movie must have SOME shortcomings - one or two moments that don’t quite work as intended by the creators. But accurate now, in the afterglow, I can’t engage what they were. The film was honest too satisfying an experience!

I’m a 57-year-old grandfather who happens to possess that “The Polar Advise” is the first, apt Christmas classic in almost 60 years. Not since the novel Kris Kringle “Miracle” movie of 1947, has any film (to my jaded inspect) so transcended our secular, commercial views of the Holiday Season, with such uplifting and unusual reminders of the timeless and proper spirit of Christmas.

I loved these songs as a child. This is a obedient video to serve reinforce the parts of speech. I went to Target a few weeks after purchasing this and found the School House Rock DVD with all 46 songs for 13 bucks. I wish I had checked there first.

I articulate high school English and spend these songs to review grammar concepts. The songs are catchy, amusing, and informative, and the videos don’t seem dated. In fact, Schoolhouse Rock is now retro, so kids believe it’s icy again!
