For pure, unadulterated, visceral entertainment, the “Lone Wolf and Cub” series can’t be beat. The acting, directing, the screenplays, and the cinematography are all top notch. The action sequences have to be seen to be believed. Each and every film feature loads of “money shots”. Fans of Tarantino will immediately recognize where he drew remarkable of his inspiration for the “Demolish Bill” series. I suspect that these movies were an influence on “Great Python and the Holy Grail” as well. Another petite known fact is that the manga that this is based upon was also the inspiration for “Road to Perdition”.

People with no experience with Japanese cinema will probably pick up these movies to be very bizarre the first time they look them. They depict a culture whose morals and values are quite different from Western standards. Its not unfamiliar in these movies for someone to end, or commit suicide, for reasons not easily comprehended. Examples: in Volume 2, a cult of female ninjas brutally dismember and raze one of their allies, unprejudiced to indicate a point (that they’re first-rate fighters) . In volume 6, one thug after another joyfully sacrifice their lives in order to back a princess perfect her killing technique. In volume 3, following a brutal rape and destroy, a Samurai attempts to relieve the criminals mask up their atrocity. His actions are depicted as profitable behavior.

The main character, Ogami Itto, can only be described as an anti-hero. An assassin by trade, he describes himself as immoral, a demon, “one who walks along the crossroads of Hell”. He will slay anyone for 500 pieces of gold, even women and children. The opening scene in the first film sets the tone of the series, when Ogami, the official executioner of the Shogun, brutally decapitates a toddler. Even so, he is portayed throughout the series as a very sympathetic, suitable character. You will derive yourself rooting for him and his son.

I can’t say enough first-rate things about these movies. They are so satisfying on every level. You’ll earn a speed at the over-the-top scenes of violence. You may even start to put a question to your Westernized notions of morality. Be cautioned though: these movies are not for the squeamish. Volume 1 and 3, in particular, feature very disturbing depictions of rape and destroy. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

“Lone Wolf and Cub” is the pinnacle of Asian grindhouse cinema and the most action-packed and downright cold series of samurai films ever made. The violence is brutal, the sex (both forced and consensual) is plentiful, the characters are memorable, and there is a lot of subtle humor and exquisite Japanese culture to be enjoyed as well. I cannot recommend these six films enough.

Beginning as the Shogun’s personal executioner, our anti-hero Ogami Itto is framed by the jealous and ambitious Yagyu clan’s shadow ops; his wife murdered in the process. In his rage, Itto takes his young son, Daigoro, and declares them to be demons, apart from the world of men to live as assassins for hire. His valuable target: the head of the Shadow Yagyus, a decrepit venerable warrior known as Retsudo. Along the plot he encounters hidden ninja and other Yagyu warriors, deadly kunoichi, clan heads in need of his services, respectable villagers, prostitutes, yakuza, Retsudo’s skilled offspring, and many more, most of whom will either be diced up by his sword, or by his enemies’. Thankfully, Lone Wolf and Cub are more than ready for whatever comes their plan. Ogami Itto pushes his son around in a modified baby cart that is packed tubby of hidden surprises for anyone who wishes to occupy his head. And nobody is his equal with a sword. Nobody. Amusingly, Daigoro manages to rack up a shrimp body count of his believe and embarks on his maintain diminutive adventures from time to time too.

The first film “Sword of Vengeance” focuses on Ogami Itto’s first clashes with the Shadow Yagyu clan; playing a bloody game of chess as the disgraced samurai embarks upon his demon’s meander by outwitting Retsudo and escaping to the start road. “Baby Cart at the River Styx” is my current film of the series and features a deadly band of lady shinobi (kunoichi), and a mission which pits Lone Wolf and Cub against a trio of skilled and generous warriors with brutal weapons who have been hired to protect his target. “Baby Cart to Hades” (best title ever!) has Itto sacrificing his beget body to protect a lowly prostitute in need and features one of the greatest action sequences ever filmed as our (anti) hero single-handedly battles an entire force of Yagyu troopers and kills ever last one. Awesome. “Baby Cart in Trouble” features a gallant female samurai with tattoos who fights topless (for distraction, examine? ) . In order to retrieve the information significant to his mission in “Baby Cart in the Land of Demons” Lone Wolf and Cub must past the deadly tests save forth by five of the clans retainers who can appear anywhere at any time. Lastly “White Heaven in Hell” pits Ogami Itto and son against a Yagyu clan desperate to finally avenge their shame by ending their lives. Lord Retsudo orders every person who helps or even speaks to them to be do to death. As Itto flees civilization into the frozen mountains, Retsudo sends his supernaturally-powered ninja to stalk him while the remainder of the clan’s army is brought up for the extinguish game. All of these films are must-sees for martial-arts and action fans.

The bonus features include many trailers, particularly for Zatoichi films (Shintaro Katsu -who played the legendary blind swordsman- produced the first three films and cast this brother, Tomisaburo Wakayama, as Ogami Itto) . Each disc also features extensive and informative notes about Japanese history and culture to back establish some of the events in the films in perspective. Edifying stuff.

If you’re looking for unrelenting action, brutal gore, a protagonist who is an unstoppable bada$#, and a narrative that has coolness around every corner then this is a series you must peek into. It’s a gigantic location to open if you’re looking to gain into samurai films and this place belongs in the DVD library of all professing to be fans of the genre. Remove these films and enter the Crossroads to Hell.

A nice PBS section that helped maintain in my plan of this dwelling of the USA.

The Appalachians is a worthy documentary of the greatest geographic spot and period of American history. I have watched these specials several times on PBS, and as a student of Appalachian Studies at Appalachian Space University, I had to leer The Appalachians in class and write research papers based on distinct interest on these documentary.

What do you catch when you mix in an astounding Australian director, a rising Australian actress, a prominent Recent Zealander actor, and a villainous American actor? The result is “Tiring, Detached,” an intense thriller that will leave you adrift in suspense for 90 minutes.

The legend, which revolves around an Australian couple taking a vacation to recover from the death of their young child in an automobile accident, might sound like the perfect movie to relax to on any evening, however it isn’t. While sailing Australia’s Immense Barrier Reef and the South Pacific, the young couple played by Nicole Kidman (”Days of Glory”; “Batman Forever”) and Sam Neill (”Renaissance Man”; “Jurassic Park”) capture up a castaway played by Billy Zane (”Mountainous”; “Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight”) who is the sole survivor of a sinking ship.

After hearing his record Neill’s character decides to go to the ship and check it out firsthand. That was his mountainous mistake. Soon Zane hijacks the yacht and Kidman, leaving Neill to sink in the ship he fled. The defective motives for Zane’s departure from the ship are later discovered as the movie progresses, however it is Kidman’s and Zane’s chemistry and performance that effect this movie one of the best suspense thrillers I have ever seen.

As usual, Zane, is the ideal villain. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was this film that led to Hollywood’s decision to cast him as a villain in almost every film he has done since “Dreary Smooth”. He was lustrous in “Mammoth”, and the most imperfect and witty fear villain since Freddy Kruegger in “Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight” However, his performance as the deranged castaway in this film mixes his ability to employ his intense sex appeal with his professionalism to the fullest extent.

Director Philip Noyce (”U2: Rattle & Hum”) happens to be one of Australia’s most gifted actors. Along with Stephen Norrington (”Blade”) these gifted Australian directors give Hollywood a modern reason to head “Down Under” when searching for top-notched directors for their films.

“Slow Aloof” represents Australia’s prominence in world cinema when it comes to brilliant thrillers produced at half the costs associated with a major Hollywood Thriller nowadays. If you’re looking for an intense thriller, you’ve found it.

When Plain Calm’s promotional editor warns you to “Try to Conclude Level-headed,” fill me when I say you’re not up to the challenge. If this one doesn’t shock you, you better regain your girlfriend to check your pulse.

The account is simple: Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill hit the ocean for some quality time together to forget the auto accident that claimed their only child. Kidman is barely there at first–she was driving when their son was killed and suffers from overpowering sorrow and guilt. When the couple floats up on a disabled ship with only one surviving passenger–Billy Zane–they select him aboard, unaware that they’ve honest taken in an angel of death. From this point on the dismay mounts relentlessly as Kidman and Neill struggle to deal with Zane and the hellfire he brings with him. Eventually separated, the husband and wife must dig deep within themselves impartial to discontinue alive.

The ample cast makes what could have been a routine B-movie work. Kidman is particularly outstanding as the emotionally vampirized young wife who slowly evolves into a strong woman who can rescue her man when she needs to. Neill, one of the industry’s most underrated performers, is stalwart and professional as always. Zane gives Anthony Perkins a hasten for his money as the psychotic young man who can only waste what he doesn’t understand–everything.

A splendid dish of cool chills, Tiresome Smooth is highly recommended to anyone who loves a capable, luminous terror.

This review refers to the WHAM! DVD edition of “My Name Is Nobody”……

Who is faster on the plot than the legendary gunslinger Jack Beauregard(Henry Fonda)? …..NOBODY! (Terence Hill) . That’s Who! This is the most appetizing western, that the whole family can indulge in together(there is some still violence and language) .

Jack Beauregard who has made quite a name for himself with a gun, fair wants to trip away quietly on a stupid boat to Europe. But it’s easier said than done. There are others who would rather examine him dull and young gunslinger Nobody is hired to do away with Jack. Nobody is so taken with the his idol though, that not only does he want Beauregard to live, but wants his story to live on in history as well. The pair become the Unfamiliar Couple of the 1890’s and you’ll have a fantastic time watching their antics.

It is filmed in the astounding “Spagehitte Western” style. Based on an thought by Sergio Leone(”Fistful of Dollars” et al), directed by Tonino Valerii, and with a extraordinary whimsical obtain by Ennio Morricone. It has all the expansive western landscapes, camera work, and some terrific acting.

I was very confused when I was shopping for this DVD. I knew this edition was an import only but I was confused as to how many versions there were.The tech info here says the studio of release is Pid, yet most of the reviews that mentioned the name of the studio refered to it as WHAM. But I really like this film alot, so I went ahead and ordered it. The image of the case here is the same as the one I recieved, but does not say Pid anywhere on it, and is WHAM!. So I honest want to certain that up in case anyone else was wondering the same thing. And by the intention, it’s a decent DVD transfer as well.

The DVD is very qualified. The sound is advantageous. I wasn’t determined what to inquire as there was no info here or on the box as far as the sound was concerned. My DVD player decoded it at DD2.0, and the music as well as the dialouge was crisp and distinct. Every cramped detail(like Fonda getting a shave) was distinguishable. The report was certain and first-rate for the most allotment. There were times when it seemed a cramped grainey, and also the colors seemed somewhat dated. But the widescreeen (1:85:1) was huge and it was a nice concept. As far as extras, you won’t procure too noteworthy, but there is some. You can go to “soundtrack” and listen to the music from your celebrated scenes. There are also bios on Henry Fonda, Terence Hill and Ennio Morricone (no filmographies though), and there is a theatrical trailer as well.

If you have seen this and know you like it, I would say this DVD is a valid take. If you have’nt seen it but worship these kind of spaghetti or amusing westerns, you’ll fancy this one! It’s a keeper!

I have seen many comedy westerns including Cat Ballou, Blazing Saddles, and City Slickers. None have made me laugh harder than “My Name is Nobody”. Henry Fonda plays a retiring gunfighter, Jack Beauregard, for the law while Terence Hill plays a comedic young gunfighter, Nobody, for noble. His methods are quite different and should hold you in stitches more than once. The scenes at the Circus can’t be beat. Although he is proficient with a gun, you never glance him raze anybody to obtain his point. Did I mention the musical secure by Ennio Morricone is mammoth? As mentioned in a marvelous review, laurie’s boomer views, you can play impartial the soundtrack. I savor Morricone’s ecstatic go lucky intro song, My Name is Nobody, and all the western themes that dramatize the scenes with Beauregard. I do hope this will be released on DVD in the US and for a lower effect. The import quality lacks a minute to be desired so I am hoping for a better transfer of the master in the future. The WHAM! version menu is overly red and the Bio has Henry Ford instead of Fonda as the name, but the bio is factual. The DVD is decent quality with a only a few cover glitches and the sound is ample. The occasional graininess can’t be helped since the unusual VHS quality was no better and probably the master print wasn’t appealing. I don’t regret getting the DVD since this is a colossal movie and my VHS is wearing out.

I am reviewing the season so far and not the DVD express. I have impartial watched the first three episodes and I have to say that this season seems worth the wait. The first two episodes were classic Curb and had me cracking up. Episode three gave us the first chapter in what tons of fans have been waiting for: the Seinfeld pseudo reunion. It was big to spy the aged cast benefit together and hearing Jerry Seinfeld say the F word was alone worth the HBO subscription impress. Hope the season only gets better. I unbiased pre-ordered the DVD this one looks like a keeper

There’s some not-so-pleasant changes in store for the minute town of Eureka.

“Eureka Season 3.0″ (meaning the first half of the third season a la “Battlestar Galactica”) provides plenty of those, which adds some fresh tension to geniustown (including some rather horrid cast changes and a recent “love-to-hate” person) . It’s kind of disconcerting to only have eight episodes, but they have the signature mixture of warm comedy and spellbinding sci-fi mystery.

Among the changes in store: Alison (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) and Nathan (Ed Quinn) peep remarriage, and Henry is in jail. And the DOD sends in a corporate “fixer” named Eva Thorne (Frances Fisher) arrives to cleave the deadwood from Global Dynamics. But then an anti-missile VIPER drone goes AWOL during a flight test and starts threatening Eureka, while Thorne decides to embed herself in Global Dynamics as one of the original bosses.

And while Eva ruthlessly makes GD “pleasurable,” the usual sci-fi disasters nick up. Carter has to deal with bizarre transformations in a sealed biosphere, a wedding-day timeloop, exploding biomemetic dogs, an impossible volcano brewing under Eureka (and which sprays nasty fluids on people), an inept spandex-wearing “Captain Eureka,” a mayoral election heated up by an artificial supernova, and a swarm of weak Egyptian insects.

In the meantime, Thorne is snooping around Eureka in search of something. Her quest leads to the discovery of a gigantic military bad, and some bodies monotonous since 1939 — and a bizarre substance that threatens Zoe’s life after she slips and falls in it.

Apparently the once all-important Artifact is yesterday’s business, because the black subplot of “Eureka Season 3.0″ is the mystery prewar bunker and whatever Thorne wants destroyed. It adds a nice undercurrent of conspiracy and tension to this season, though the focus is always first and foremost on our Everyman Sheriff, and how he tries to deal with the Horrific World-Ending Scientific Crisis of the day.

That’s a nice balance, because the rest of the season flows in a river of gentle humor and grievous scientific problems. Plenty of peculiar inventions (cloud sculpting, flying rabbits and robot pooches), fun tongue-in-cheek dialogue (”They killed the infected and burned the city to the ground.” “Let’s call that View B”), and hilarious comedic moments. And Carter’s always in the middle of it, trying to unravel a map to fix things.

But it’s worth noting that while the Disasters Du Jour and the bunker plots are dealt with by the eighth episode, the half season ends with a cliffhanger for one character. Unprejudiced sayin’.

Ferguson does a shining job as Carter, the down-to-earth Everycop who honest wants to do his job (”It’s all fun and games until someone gets cursed”) . But Carter has some novel problems in this season — his new-agey, pregnant sister moves in with him, and Zoe continues to spread her wings with a job and boyfriend. Erica Cerra’s Jo experiences some relationship woes, while Richardson-Whitfield’s Alison is achieve in the situation of being stunning powerless. Sadly, a longtime cast member also exits the scene early on.

This season also sees the return of Henry, whose skills turn out to be too invaluable for him to rot in prison — and he even gets a unique job on top of his used one. And Fisher turns out to be a tremendous addition: she initially makes a substantial steely-eyed corporate dictator, but the facade cracks as time goes on, and we glean to glance that she’s stunned by something unpleasant in the past.

“Eureka Season 3.0″ is intention too short (modern episodes coming in July), but it tranquil has the modern mix of out-there sci-fi and small-town comedy. Definitely mild worth the seeing.

Due to the writers’ strike two years ago, all scripted shows were unfortunately shortened, resulting in seasons where it was months between unusual episodes. For some shows, the wait was too long and some were eventually cancelled due to bad ratings.

Luckily, for fans of Eureka, the creators simply split the season into two parts; an eight episode arc, which aired last July, and the second one, which premieres this July. The result is a longer season spread over two years, distinguished like Battlestar Galactica. Some may call the upcoming episodes Season Four, but it’s technically the second half of Season 3.

In any event, the first half of Season 3 is now out on DVD, fair in time for the premiere of the remaining season. And while short on episodes, the reveal was at the top of it’s game this season. I don’t know about you, but to me this indicate is like comfort food. I worship the characters and I cherish the world they inhabit. A perfect cast led by Colin Ferguson secure the most out of the sometimes astounding situations. I won’t go into the whole chronicle arc, suffice to say that there is a modern arrival in Eureka, who harbors a colossal secret about the town’s past. And as the saying goes, out with stale and in with the unique, as SPOILER ALERT! a regular cast member departs midway through.

So while it might be frustrating to only have eight episodes here (and I watched all of them in one afternoon!), I personally grasp quality over quantity. My only peril with this region is a lack of an episode guide. That, and it would have been mammoth to have the musical promo they did before the first episode last year! It was terrific and it’s kind of a tease that they mention it in the music featurette and display a clip of it too, but not the whole thing. That’s only a itsy-bitsy complaint, because really the episodes are what it’s all about and I absolutely recommend picking this up!

Regardless of what you order, you find bulky veil, which really pisses me off. There is no excuse for only making a paunchy cover DVD in the 21st Century!!!

If you can’t laugh at this movie then you’ve got some major issues. While some people may inspect at it as a fabulous and touching family film, it’s impartial as broad if you’re in the 18-24 demographic and looking for some low-brow (but highly intelligent) comedy. Lawful me if I’m execrable, but a hockey-playing monkey is fair about the best thing that’s ever happened to Hollywood. And let’s not forget that Jack went on to become a master skateboarder and snowboarder (in MVP 2 and MXP, respectively) . This monkey is a favorable actor, athlete, scholar, and gentleman.

Many people were probably very inflamed upon reaching the demolish of Zoo when they realized that they had not unprejudiced watched a documentary, they had watched an art house film deceptively packaged as a documentary. Zoo eschews all standards of documentary filming such as accurate boom or video interviews, and instead strives to amaze viewers with flashy cinematography, a haunting musical get, and existential self-referential segments that have diminutive or no connection with the subject matter of the documentary. Zoo is nominally about the events leading up to Kenneth Pinyan’s death due to a perforated colon when he engaged in anal intercourse with an Arabian stallion on videotape, as well as the individuals in Pinyan’s life who encouraged or were at least indifferent to his interest in bestiality. Director Robinson Devor determine to exhaust actors to execute reenactments of events coupled with the occasional voiceover from audio interviews with a scant few people willing to talk about the articulate. These audio tracks and reenactments do not even constitute the bulk of the film, which would have been acceptable if they gave any decent information. The immense majority of Zoo is simply long trailing shots of scenery or people matched with exclusive color schemes or eerie music. If these non-essential segments were all edited out, Zoo’s runtime would be chop down from 80 minutes to somewhere around 30 minutes. There is no denying that Devor has a gargantuan talent for camera work and editing, but his talent is not superb to making documentaries.

Devor is so obsessed with producing a specific mood and theme, to the complete detriment of the “place”, that he might as well be directing an Italian giallo. Halfway through the film the actor who portrays a police officer is shown in front of an entirely white background while he talks about his reaction to being asked to act in the film that he is currently acting in. Occasionally throughout this monologue the shroud flashes dismal, leaving a white ghost meander of the actor’s silhouette. This sort of ploy crosses the line from artsy to self indulgent, especially considering that the monologue has only the most tenuous of connections to Pinyan or the zoo lifestyle. Perhaps Devor was trying to prove that a subject as bizarre as animal cherish and the men who would risk potential death to purchase section in it could not successfully be explained by a straight forward exposition of events, but instead required a broader behold at people and their environments in general that requires multiple viewings to really sink in.

Looking for an avant garde or artsy film to blow your mind with unusual camera angles and off the wall color schemes? Peek no further than Zoo. Those who actually wanted to learn something about Kenneth Pinyan or the mindset of people who would steal in such deviant acts can pass on this one.

If they hadn’t spent so powerful footage on seemingly endless tracking shots of highways and byways, the filmmakers could have gone more into depth as to what causes bestiality urges in some people, the online communities they are interested in, and more. As it stands, the documentary is not very insightful in the long hurry. It feels as if it’s only the first chapter in a series that will probably not be continued.

After disappointingly releasing James Whale’s 1931 classic Frankenstein in two previous DVD editions, I had my doubts as to whether or not this edition would be any better. Would Universal give this classic fright film the treatment it deserved? To be fair, the previous DVD’s special features were always spacious, like documentaries, audio commentary, ect.; but the one proper mutter that bothered me about the other editions was characterize and audio quality. I can honestly say that, even after going as far as making a side by side comparison between the first release and this current edition, this fresh anniversary edition is the one to enjoy. Grand has been improved over the outmoded versions, and I could not study any blemishes that exist here that did not exist before. The film now looks sharper, with significantly less dirt and dust, and the disagreement of the expressionist photography has also been improved, with truer blacks and more subtle grays giving the film’s cinematography the shadowy starkness it was intended to have, I dare say the film probably hasn’t looked this trustworthy in years. And as a plus, they let the ruin credits travel to sad like they were intended to, unlike in previous DVD editions when they strangely paused the waste credits. As far as audio is concerned, it is obliging and loud, somewhat hissy, but not distractingly so. Extra special features also worth while. This recent edition finally fives this classic the digital treatment it deserves and proves that even after 75 years, Frankenstein is smooth a enchanting landmark in early American terror cinema.

Although I have seen better prints of the film, this DVD direct of Universal Studio’s distinguished FRANKENSTEIN is a magnificient package that is certain to delight any fan of classic anxiety. The film itself has been restored for remark, and the Skal-hosted documentary–which traces the account from Mary Shelly’s distinguished original through its numerous film incarnations–is a delight, including numerous interviews with various historians, critics, and Karloff’s daughter. The bonus audio track by Rudy Behlmer is also quite spellbinding, as are the various biographies and notes, and although the short film BOO is a untrue mix of footage from NOSFERATU, DRACULA, THE CAT AND THE CANARY, and FRANKENSTEIN, it is an appetizing tiny throw-away. All in all, it doesn’t pick up worthy better than this.

As for the film itself, the production of FRANKENSTEIN was prompted by the unbelievable success of the earlier DRACULA–but where DRACULA is a rather problematic and significantly dated film, FRANKENSTEIN was and remains one of the most fresh awe films to ever emerge from Hollywood. Worthy of the credit for this goes to director James Whale, who by all accounts was deeply influenced by restful German film and his fill traumatic experiences during World War I–and who mixed those elements with occasional flourishes of macabre humor to get a remarkably consistent vision of Mary Shelly’s fresh new.

Whale was extremely, extremely fortunate in his cast. Colin Clive was a difficult actor, but Whale not only managed to pick up him through the film but to procedure from him his finest cloak performance; Mae Clarke is a memorable Elizabeth; and Dwight Frye, so memorable in DRACULA, tops himself as Fritz. But all eyes here are on Boris Karloff as the monster. Karloff had been kicking around Hollywood for a decade, and although he appeared in quite a few films before FRANKENSTEIN he never really registered with the public. But in this role, acting under heavy make-up, weighed down by lead weights in his shoes and struts around his legs, and without a line of intelligible dialogue he offered a performance that transcended the word “monster.” This is a suffering being, hazardous mainly through innocence of his maintain power and the arrangement of the world, goaded from exertion to exertion to peril. Even some seventy-plus years later, it is difficult to imagine any other actor in the fragment.

Karloff would play the monster again in two later films, one of them directed by Whale, but although THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN is a great film in its contain moral, this is the modern combination of talents and the new vision. Truly a national cherish, to be enjoyed over and over again. Strongly recommended.

The insensible are inflamed as heck and aren’t going to retract it anymore! When we last caught up with George Romero’s “Unimaginative” films, “Day of the Tiring,” focused on the military trying to recount the zombies for combat and experimenting on them. Romero takes the next step introduced into a world divided by the dumb and the living each sharing spot reluctantly with the other. That is until a gas plot attendant zombie shows an inkling of intelligence and decides to go after the living in a sealed off skyscaper while those less fortunate live on the streets of the sealed off metropolis. Hurry by Kaufman (Dennis Hopper in perfect looney mode), the city is supplied by “employees” who can’t live in the resplendent people’s skyscraper. These scavengers led by Riley (Simon Baker) and Cholo (John Leguizamo) pillage the landscape around them for important items for the wealthy. Riley has a conscience decides he will no longer lead the crew of his “tank” Humdrum Reconkening and work for “the man” anymore. Cholo, on the other hand, keeps doing Kaufman’s dirty work in hopes that he’ll be able to seize his contrivance into the wealthy paradise.

As usual Romero has lots of gore but, more importantly, there’s a sly political and satricial message at the heart of the movie. Romero who has been an independent filmmaker his whole life probably identifies with Riley and thinks of the film studios as Kaufman and his denizens. It’s a considerable broader metaphor though as it can be venerable to peep at the disappearing middle class and the disintegration of the class system in America. It’s a fun saunter with some of Romero’s most accomplished filmmaking. Working with a budget of around $20 million Romero manages to do the same kind of work as was seen in the remake of his “Dawn of the Lifeless” last year. Interestingly, the more films Romero makes in his “Lifeless” series (and this probably going to be the last or at least next to last because of his age), the more milage he gets out of the inspiration for the entire saga–Richard Matheson’s fresh “I Am Memoir” which was turned into the crude budget fear movie “The Last Man on Earth” with Vincent Tag (and the campy “The Omega Man” with Charleton Heston) .

Outstanding effects are nicely off plot with strong performances by the cast including Asia Argento (daughter of Romero friend and Italian scare film director Dario Argento) as a old hooker named Tedious who is almost fed to the “stenches” (as the city inhabitants refer to the rotting zombies) in a bizarre scene that satrizies “Indignant Max Beyond Thunderdome”. Romero hasn’t lost his touch and although this doesn’t have quite the revolutionary punch of “Dawn of the Monotonous” or “Night of the Living Dumb” it’s an improvement on “Day of the Monotonous” as well as most of the scare films out there.

The DVD has a very nice transfer and with the exception of an occasional bit of digital shimmer, the film looks as vibrant and alive as the vivid red gushing blood. This is worthy more an action adventure movie than the previous films in the terror series and provides a nice bookend to the remake of “Dawn of the Tiresome” (even if it isn’t related) . Sound is sparkling fascinating with a nice 5.1 and DTS mix that will have you looking over your shoulders for the undead.

Extras include a gripping commentary by “Slow” director Romero, producer Grunwald and editor Michael Doherty. There’s also a number of featurettes on the making of the film but my personal accepted is “When Shawn Met George” about when Simon Pegg and Edgar White (star & writer and director * writer respectively) of the comedy/horror film “Shawn of the Uninteresting” met Romero and appeared as extras in “Land of the Monotonous”. We earn to gape how they’re made into the undead and the first meeting between the three of them. “Undead Again” provides a gaze into the making of the film. “Green Conceal to Finished Veil” gives us before and after comparisons between the raw footage and the finished footage with optical effects. “Storyboards and Final Scenes” looks at the storyboards inserted as PIP with the finished product. “Bellow Tests” opens with a very silly outtake featuring dancing zombies from the CGI footage for the film. “Scenes of Carnage” is dazzling self explanatory. “Bits and Pieces” are scenes that were sever. Although none of the featurettes are quite as exhaustive as those provided as extras for the three disc state of the unusual “Dawn of the Plain”. There’s also some other extras including a behind-the-scenes “A Day with the Living Plain”.

Could “Dreary” have been more? Definite. There were some missed opportunities here regarding the life in the tower but then that would have been a completely different movie. Romero’s done a terrific job given the limitations of time and budget. Deftly balancing satire, alarm and humanism, Romero makes one of his best films in years. I’m hoping this does well at the box office so that Romero can net financing to continue to inquire of the post-stench world a bit more. Oh and it’s a Romero rarity with an ending that’s actually more upbeat than I expected.

We should have known that if George A. Romero was going to go succor to the well of the living boring another time he was going to reach up with something different. What “George A. Romero’s Land of the Dreary” (the director’s name goes up top so you know this is not merely another remake of one of his zombie films, like last year’s “Dawn of the Boring”) offers is two variations on the familiar theme. The first is in this daring unique world humanity has found a procedure of perpetuating the former divide between the “haves” and “haves not,” even when there are all those zombies out there suggest it should now be “us” versus “them.” Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) has spot up Fiddler’s Green, a luxury high rise on an island between a couple of rivers (contemplate the space of Three River Stadium in Romero’s aged stomping ground of Pittsburgh even though the movie is shot in Toronto) . There the “haves” live while the rest of the island has the “have nots,” some of whom are hired as mercenaries to go out into the world and bring benefit “necessities.” Apparently money aloof matters in the “Land of the Unimaginative,” or perhaps people are merely trying to own on to the ragged contrivance of life, because the abominable are not listening to those advocating going and taking away from the rich.

Consequently, humanity has found a scheme to survive. You can compare the more active advance of “Land of the Listless” with the mall rats of “Dawn of the Unimaginative,” who found a passive means of existence. Kaufman has built Expressionless Reckoning, a vast armored vehicle that leads foraging parties out into the world. These parties are led by Riley (Simon Baker), whose famous goal is getting everybody serve alive, which does not always happen. That is because he works with Cholo (John Leguizamo), who has a different opinion of necessities, one attuned to the aesthetic tastes of Kaufman. Both men hold they are on their last mission at the initiate of this 2005 film, Riley because he will have now earned enough to pay for a car to win out of town and Cholo because he believes he has now earned the chance to depart on up to Fiddler’s Green. Both are ghastly and that sets up the conflict to reach.

This is where the second variation comes into play. Kaufman not only created a high rise where the “haves” are protected from that “have nots,” some of whom actually support the “haves” have even more, but the entire island is zombie proof. This forces Romero to change the zombie allotment of the equation, and so we are introduced to Tall Daddy (Eugene Clark), who runs a gas site and has a moment akin to when the ape looks at the thigh bone in “2001: A Region Odyssey.” Unprejudiced to relieve us along the yell over at the launch of the film warn us that if the zombies ever compose anything approaching rudimentary thinking skills that would be a unpleasant thing, a very dreadful thing indeed. So, of course, that is what happens. After all, if you can have dreadful humans, then you can have agreeable zombies (Joss Whedon has convinced me being lifeless does not execute a character inherently unpleasant) .

Having a zombie to root for is quite a different experience, but Romero also delivers on the guts and gore when the zombies go into their patented feeding frenzy. The memoir can offer all the sly social satire it wants, we view these movies to be disgusted by the bloody scenes of cannibalism. The people Romero hires to do makeup and special effects are clearly on the cutting edge when it comes to this type of work. Even when you peruse the DVD special features and you peruse what they are doing in lustrous light most of it will mild scoot you out, so the scenes in the film shot at night or in the shadows with the liberal application of blood and other things it is even worse (which is a ample thing in a zombie movie) .

The bottom line is that Romero delivers unprejudiced what his fans want with this movie so that there is not a dilemma with failing to meet expectations. No, “Land of the Monotonous” is not the best of the bunch, but for my money nothing will surpass the new “Night of the Living Insensible.” The well-known thing is that here we are four films into the series, limiting ourselves to fair the Romero helmed ones, and the series is certainly going a lot strong than the other comparable panic series, all of which have been abandoned by their creators (which is either a cause or conclude) . Final Note: Glance for Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright of “Shaun of the Dreary” fame as the photo booth zombies in one of the classic cameos of the early 21st century.
